  • The second part of Devin's road trip from Maryland to Dallas! Yes, there was more to be seen. Box makes a second appearance. We talked about nachos (but not really). Beautiful scenery and boring highway.... This video has it all!

Hey im moving from md to dallas too. Were there any real hiccups driving? Did you lose signals with your gps in any specific times? Were there any bad roads or sketchy areas at the truck stops? Any advice?

Hi ShadeySpice! The best advice that I can give you would actually be great advice for any road trip, regardless of destination. There are a few key points that you should cover while you're planning for your move.
-Plan your route beforehand (I use Google Maps, but there are other great programs out there). It's important to know which route you're taking and how long it will take.
-Plan your stops. It's critical to have an idea of how many hours you'll be driving per day. You should try to book hotels in advance (I try to make stops in more populated areas, just so I have a variety of hotel choices.) Remember to account for stops for fuel/food/restrooms to make sure you can stay on schedule.
-Remember to pack everything you might need to travel comfortably and safely. You always want to be prepared. Take easy-to-eat snacks/drinks, music or audio books to help stay awake, emergency kits for your car (this should include jumper cables, tire changing equipment, etc), and a GPS device. I use Google Maps on my phone, it seems to work quite well as long as you have charging cable to keep your battery from dying. Take a U.S. road map as a backup.
-Don't push your limits. This is often overlooked, but I can't stress the importance of this enough. DON'T wait until the low fuel light comes on before fueling up. Always have at least a quarter of a tank in your car. There are stretches of highway that don't have a gas station for 50 miles or more. Also, if you feel tired or drowsy, do what it takes to wake yourself up. Snack on something light, chew gum, roll down the windows, pull over at a safe spot for a quick power nap, whatever works to WAKE UP. Drowsy driving is dangerous, for you and for drivers around you.
-Be aware of your surroundings. Try not to drive at night, if possible. If you pull into a parking lot or gas station and you notice sketchy characters lurking around or you feel like something isn't right, find a safer place to go! Every city/town has good and bad parts. It's up to you to realize that you've ventured into a bad neighborhood, and it's up to you to find a better spot to stop.
As far as your particular questions, I didn't have any major hiccups on my road trip. I believe there were a few spots in Eastern Tennessee where I didn't have phone service, but your GPS should continue to work for a while as long as you don't close the app (test your GPS device before the trip to make sure.) The roads that I took all seemed to be in pretty good shape. Most interstates are well maintained by most standards. I don't recall if I personally saw any very sketchy truck stops, but if I did I would make sure to avoid them and move on to a safer area. Just remember to be aware of your surroundings.
Road trips can be a lot of fun, especially when you plan accordingly for them!
