  • The things I love and the lessons learned from building my first main camera system as a freelance filmmaker. The main components in my current system is the Sony FS5 mark II, Sigma cinezoom 18-35 mm/T2, Atomos Shogun 7, Rode NTG-5 microphone, Sennheiser AVX-ME2 and the Sony MDR-7506 headphones. I have also built a shoulder rig with parts from Smallrig, Shape and a follow focus from Edelkrone. The last piece shown in this video is the Polarpro Basecamp matte box.

    This video is not sponsored at all! I bought everything with my own money.
    Thank you Daniel Jakobsson for your shots with my B camera, Sony A7iii.

    Hey, thanks for the shout-out! ♥️♥️♥️ You have a great FS5 setup! I agree with your comments about lighting. It's the most overlooked thing for people who are new to cinematography. Please keep creating wonderful content! 😀😀😀

    Awesome video. As someone who just upgraded to a used FS5 from mirrorless, its nice to see that it’s still relevant!

      Absolutely. This is a keeper no matter what the manufacturers come up with next. I'm not saying that I won't be buying new cameras... but I will keep this on for sure :)

    Nicely done. And yea I agree there are things to learn outside of the camera like the lighting. And I think you are right the FS5ii is a great camera for what it is and though there are lots of great options out there, this one isn't knocked out yet. :)

      If and when you shoot in direct sun light then you will realize it's not just the looks. It does make a difference in the image quality. But yeah a lot of times it's for the looks.

    My wife and I both have the mark2 for school projects and and just a few month to finish a 4 year long degree (LAFS). We have tested many cameras and the Sony FS5ii by far has been very competitive in every sense. In reality it doesn't matter how good your equipment is, it all falls on the ingenuity of the DP and director. People have created master pieces in the past with just archaic technology nowadays, we have used different lenses and the camera just keeps getting better.

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Selvin Morales well said! Sometimes I imagine what the old cinematographers who shot the early classics would say if they could play around with the technology we have today. And imagine what their work would look like 🤩

    Nice video!!! I have a set up very similar to yours: Sony fs5 2, atomos inferno, but I have the fujinon lens. In Brazil where I live, its not a very popular camera. Videographers prefer to invest in Blackmagic cameras. I believe that the difficulty in terms of compatible lenses leads to this. The Brazilian market, second hands, has many lenses from Canon and similars e few from Sony e-mount.

    If you have a camera but no lights you can still create a visual. At least you can move outside or you can shoot next to a window, or you can bounce natural light around. But, If you have lights but no camera you can't create anything at all.

      Jose Perez Presents Awesome. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I am. My best tips is to really learn the camera and take it out on some practice rounds so you are comfortable with all the essentials when you are on set. I found Dog Jensens course on Vimeo well worth the money spent. Also, join the big community of FS5 users on Facebook 😀

    Subscribed! I have been waiting to upgrade my rig for a long time and this video convinced me to get this exact setup. (Camera, Lens, Atomos Shogun) -- I have a question. I am new to the Atomos family and when I go to shoot in 240 FPS (Super slow 2k) the record button is dimmed out on the Shogun. Any thoughts?

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and welcome! 😇 It’s actually been a while since I shot 240 fps so I don’t have it fresh in my memory... but since the super slow modes are in bursts you wouldn’t be able to do continuous recordings in that frame rate. Have you tried to enable “record trigger” on the Atomos, shot a clip in 240 fps and then see if the Atomos start recording during playback?

    Great vid, wondering how the metabones works with this camera, do you get full functions, how about auto focus using canon lenses?

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4siteVideo Thanks. The auto focus on the FS5 (both mark I and II) are useless to tell you the truth. On cameras like A7iii (with good auto focus) the Metabones adapter and Canon glass is okey but not as fast as native glass. If possible, do real life tests first hand before you buy 😊.

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I no longer own this camera. Moved on to the FX-series, so still in the Sony “world”. I’ve found myself no matter what camera or brand, lighting makes the most difference of everything involved in filmmaking. Study lighting and practice is my best general advice ☺️

    is the FS5II still a good buy, today with the release of the A7SIII? I have the chance to grab one for near $3000, and struggling with the decision as i would rather stay FF and have IBIS and great AF.

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it all comes down to how you intend to use it and the budget you have. The FS5ii is a very good camera. And will be until it simply won't start anymore :) But there is so much improvements in every model that arrives at the market. For example: Sony FX9 has superb auto focus and a lovely color profile straight out of camera along with gyro and Full Frame. But its bigger and more expensive. If you are not in a hurry... stay calm until they show us more about the features and price of the coming FX6. But, the FS5ii will still be a very good camera for many situations :)

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the differences between FS5 and FSii are kinda few. The FS5ii does have a "Venice look" color profile which the first version does not have. Also the FS5ii has the RAW license baked in from the factory.

    • @MattiasSkoog

      Рафаэль Хабибуллин yeah, I feel that way too... but at the same time - the development of new technologies, fight between the brands etc. makes us creators winners in the end. And as I’ve been saying before... the FS5ii is still a really good camera. They don’t produce less quality just because something new arrives to the market. And there will be new things every year... 😄

      @@MattiasSkoog Camera envy is pernicious and you just nailed my reasons for being very pleased with the FS5 and FS700 I own. I produce for my audience and honestly, they are not filmmakers but ordinary people and thus, they derive benefit from my information more so than my tool quality. I look forward to more information on lighting as I've subscribed and hope for you the best with this venture.
