From 1:00 how he just controls those dynamics. Complete and utter emotion. Yes, I feel it. Others may not, but I know for certain Gould knew what he was doing. It's beautiful. Then he raises back up. I am disgusted by comments of "there is no force, no emotion put in his playing" and yet the whole performance was filled with it. Open your ears.
Gould was truly a passionate and eccentric genius. there is no doubt of his great talent when you watch this kind of performance. literally almost flawless and full of feeling !
The ectasy of Gould. 30 years today since the great man passed away. If there is a heaven, Bach and Gould are there, playing to each other and exchanging musical ideas and thoughts.
Yes, not only does Gould feel every single note, but he does something else by going beyond the piano and into the world of the music. In other words, he is a performer of the music, first and foremost.
0:56 - 1:36 D-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d ... 40 Seconds long continuous repetition of that single note, slowly taking the upper hand before receding again and then transforming. Enchanting, magical.
I have SO friggin many favorite sections in this (actually in the entire 8 minute recording) I can barely get to the end. Wacthing him play this is so wild. Currently Im obsessing with 55 to about 100 and 110- 136 (unbelievable control) and 205-226 or even clear to the end. Should probably just say the entire thing. Actually bought the CD recently and I go jammin down the road twice a week with that thing going non stop. He actually works up to getting airborn those last 3 bounces
You're lucky. There is still a CD available of the BEST recording Gould ever did of this in 1957 with Leonard Bernstein. It's a SONY CD called "Glenn Gould Anniversary Edition" SK87760 (Bach: Keyboard Concertos Nos. 1,4 & 5). It's so great, you can listen to it hundreds of times and never get tired of it.
you know,I really don't bach's concertos played on piano,as they were written for hapsichord, but every time I listen to Gould,I don-t hear a piano,I hear a soul, the pure soul of Bach!
Simply astounding!! Glenn Gould's musicality is exceptional. He has a remarkable feel for the piano, and his technique is amazing. I love his rendition of Bach's concerto No. 1 in D Minor.
I can't play the piano and don't know the note (nor does it matter), but I love it when he hits that one note with his right pinky right at 2:11!! I watch that little sequence over and over..
Absolutely Beautiful. Going to look out for this DVD. I always like when Gould plays alongside and orchestral or string backing. He contrasts so wonderfully and with sheer artistry. Let your ears be the judge!
Gotta love the chair;) Gould goes to music oblivion every time he plays! I love 2:05- the end, but most of all, I think that the main theme, stated at 2:05 partially and completely at the end is a great musical statement! It's so incredibly logical, really almost argues itself, but as great composers like Bach Beethoven and Mahler, they, like great writers, choose meaty themes and developed them so well!!
Just Simply BEAUTIFUL AND GORGEOUS! I have the this recording on my computer but without video, and I have to say, it nearly made me cry, because Glenn Gould is just too powerful at this music!
A lot of people think that this performance is too slow. I like it better this way - I think that this was done deliberately so that one can hear the inner voices better, making it a Bach performance rather than a piano performance.
I loved this piece! This is the best recording i've ever heard from glenn gould! It is better than the older recording. Too bad it isnt full. I love Glenn Gould just because his playing has such feelings.
I so agree. Their styles complement one another. Gould's laser-like precision is the perfect adjunct to Bach's rather mathematical composing. I love "Gould plays Bach".
They were clearly completely in the zone: clarity, sensitivity, precision. The orchestra was in great harmony with the soloist in terms of timing and mood, it's all very structured and to the point, very focused, at the same time very expressive. You can't really top that. You can, at best, interpret it differently, but this one works for me.
(An excerpt from "An Ode to Glenn Gould"): His hands! I must speak of his hands... The long, slender well-manicured fingers... Each sparking a 'supply of energy' all it's own... They were capable of so much magic... More than any magician's have ever wrought! Ah yes, they were so important to him... And to the world of music, and now... Down through invisible halls of time, to me! When they play, the world seems to stop... And I am being visited by the angels... For that while.
@Perry Greenbaum: Thank you for clearing up any confusion/misinformatiom of this all too short excerpt. I think we'd all love to see the entire broadcast so Bernstein Family please help us!!! Igor Stravinsky was also an invitee for this program.
Whenever I'm feeling fed up with everything, I watch this clip. It restores my faith in humanity.

Bravo LinkBullet for your comment.
LinkBulletBill - absolutely - total emotion with supreme technique. god love the man.
Spot on LinkBullet. Emotion oozing from every bar..
I must have listened to this hundreds of times....but still not tired of it.

Three immense geniuses: Bernstein, Gould, and of course, Bach
Yes, not only does Gould feel every single note, but he does something else by going beyond the piano and into the world of the music. In other words, he is a performer of the music, first and foremost.
Amazing modulations...
0:56 - 1:36 D-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d ...
40 Seconds long continuous repetition of that single note, slowly taking the upper hand before receding again and then transforming.
Enchanting, magical.
This is my all time favorite Gould recording....just amazing.
Bach, Glenn Gould and Bernstein... Perfection!
What an honor to see someone play like that.
Oh, I really love it ! And particularly the gesture of Gould at the conclusion of the concerto. In my next life, I want to be him !
The section at 1'10... beautiful, makes the pain of life bearable
still, the best recording of this piece & will never be bettered - the master at work.
genius at play. pure genius. we are lucky to have this footage on record to document such a play
Perhaps one of the greatest pianists to ever live. The idiosyncrasy...the genius.
I hope his soul is resting in peace now.
I hope he will rest in the perfection he always sought, forever.
this is true magic. it's incredible how gould manages too change your feelings in a heartbeat

One of the Greatest 🎵🎹👍
Bernstien & Gould !!!! It doesn't get better than this . Thanks for posting!!!!

American tv used to be what tv can be. There were few programs like this - but these programs existed. Now they do not.
i love the way at the end he throws his head in the air, thats just so original...
The music is played with such passion....
I love that. Absolutely.
sublime beauty on its own and the beauty of precision..
you know,I really don't bach's concertos played on piano,as they were written for hapsichord, but every time I listen to Gould,I don-t hear a piano,I hear a soul, the pure soul of Bach!
Bach would be proud of Gould and honoured to hear him play.
When I was 13 I bought my first album and it was BWV 1052 played on a harpschord. 1052 is still my favorite piece of music.
Simply astounding!! Glenn Gould's musicality is exceptional. He has a remarkable feel for the piano, and his technique is amazing. I love his rendition of Bach's concerto No. 1 in D Minor.
Pure genius three times over --Bach, Bernstein - and Gould!
I can't play the piano and don't know the note (nor does it matter), but I love it when he hits that one note with his right pinky right at 2:11!! I watch that little sequence over and over..
2:57 this moment is priceless
haha thats so cool :)
A TRUE MASTER AT his art ! ... yes: Zen-like in his immersion in the music and its sense and feeling.
Nothing like... sublime perfection... and Gould his magistral representant... oh God!!!
Love Glenn's long fingers :x
Absolutely Beautiful.
Going to look out for this DVD.
I always like when Gould plays alongside and orchestral or string backing. He contrasts so wonderfully and with sheer artistry.
Let your ears be the judge!
Es sublime esta interpretacón
there's nothing astonishing about this video, but it's probably one of the more mesmerizing performances captured on video.
1:10, that moment when you become the piano and the piano becomes you and nothing else exists.
This is impassioned playing at it's finest!
Wow!!!! Wow!!!!! Wow!!!!!
hot damn, glenn gould, hot damn.
Gotta love the chair;) Gould goes to music oblivion every time he plays! I had the privilege of playing this piece at a recital (on piano). The experience was nothing short of magical. This is Bach.
amazing and so beautiful... no other words.
Just Simply BEAUTIFUL AND GORGEOUS! I have the this recording on my computer but without video, and I have to say, it nearly made me cry, because Glenn Gould is just too powerful at this music!
Quel interprète merveilleux !
you are magnificent... thanks so much glenn...
My God, it's one of the best recordings that I could ever hear; thanks so much for posting it :)
Glenn is a legend. The Pianist and period.
Gould and his typical Steinway. I love this music. I love Bach and Glenn Gould was the pianist who played the most brilliant interpretations of Bach.
A lot of people think that this performance is too slow. I like it better this way - I think that this was done deliberately so that one can hear the inner voices better, making it a Bach performance rather than a piano performance.
Despite being an atheist this man almost wants me to believe in God again because no one can play like this unless he is truly blessed!
Great Glenn Gould! He explained every thing with his performances!!
@groooves
i just love this passionate recording...
it is so very excellent... thanks so much glenn...
it delights me extremely...!!
...c
Awesome...
I cry, this is perfect :''D
it's pretty hard to explain how amazing this in words literally
and the way the sound goes right through the piano
i can't understand how someone can call goulds piano play soulless. it's so beautiful
wonderful.
Thank you Glenn Gould.
i felt 1000 years old today and then i watched this. grooves video is better synchro-
nized than the other, anyone else noticed?
*perfection*
He was most great talent pianist all of the world.
Its enough enjoy and his mind just likes BACH.
I loved this piece! This is the best recording i've ever heard from glenn gould! It is better than the older recording. Too bad it isnt full. I love Glenn Gould just because his playing has such feelings.
There is so much energy in this performance. Listen to Lipatti playing this concerto also...
Thanks, God, for Bach and Gould
Phenomenal performance. I like it!
There is now a 9 minute clip of this same performance. Do this search:
Glenn Gould Bernstein BWV 1052
bt10ant Thank you for the info I really enjoyed listening to Glenn play that nine minute clip.
Every note burns of passion ,God.
This is really, from all music I know, modern or classic the best piece ever written, and this is its best interpretation!
genial!
The ending gave me chills.
MOAR!!!!
Hi is in deep , deep meditation ...amazing...
WOW!!!!!! This is perfect!
I so agree. Their styles complement one another. Gould's laser-like precision is the perfect adjunct to Bach's rather mathematical composing. I love "Gould plays Bach".

this made me cry.

1:10 - 1:36 - The most heavenly transition ever!

This drips with passion & emotion.... probably not a finer recording anywhere.
Brilliant !
Glenn Gould was the man....Nuff said
Genius!
amazing
I prefer this music with baroque orchestra and cembalo, but when hearing Gould it is impossible for me not to be very impressed. he was a genius
1st interpretation of bach from this guy that i like. Sounds perfect ;)
