    So I realized after uploading I forgot to mention how to style your shield. It's real easy to do. Before you craft your shield when you have it selected there is a style button right under the name of the shield. Just click that and select your style then craft your shield.

      Hi Spark. The parry bonus is multiplied to the block value of the shield+your skill. So if you have a total of 100 block and the parry bonus is 1.5, you'll be able to parry 150.

    The parry bonus is only for defense. When defending, a parry provides the ability to block damage equivalent to the block power of the weapon/shield being used to parry times the multiplier of the shield/weapon being used to parry.
    Ex. A dagger with a block power of 8, times parry multiplier of 4, means that with a successful parry the dagger can block 32 damage.

    • @AuthorityCat
      @AuthorityCat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't it for offense as well though? Not the shield, on the shield it only blocks more, but if you parry with a dagger, pretty sure the damage lines up with the parry bonus multiplier. Please clarify if I'm wrong, I'd like to know!

    I think I noticed the source of your confusion. Parry bonus is not a damage bonus. It’s a bonus to your blocking power when you parry. The bronze shield is capable of blocking double the damage when you parry with it. Every other shield is 1.5x the blocking power.

  • @SteveAkaDarktimes

    Tl;DR Saved you 20 minutes.
    Block Power is a Flat amount of Damage Negated. It goes up in increments of 5 per item level/material Tier
    Tower Shields Trade Parry ability for 15 more base Block Power, -20% Movement penalty and more weight.
    Parry Force is Knockback Distance on Parry.
    Parry Bonus is Multiplier to Block Power on Parry. not Damage.
    If Damage goes through Parry, enemy is not staggered.
    Parrying costs less Stamina than hold Blocking
    Parry Damage is hardcoded 2x on all weapons.
    Blocking skill: every level increases Block power by 0.5% to a max of 50% at Lvl 100. this is useful/rare Flat damage reduction.

  • @yahoozaify
    @yahoozaify 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Parry bonus: If you time your block correctly, you manage to parry the enemy, multiplying the block force of your shield by the parry bonus. A successful parry knocks back and staggers the enemy, which are different game mechanics. I think staggered enemies always take double damage.

  • @johnpratt6578

    I think you're wrong. The parry puts the ennemy in a "Stagger" bonus. It's same with all shields or weapon taht can parry. Parry bonus is multiplied by the BLOCKING bonus. So if your shield blocks 30 damage, and your parry is 1.5 (50%), then you can parry up to 45 damage.

    • @eXponentia
      @eXponentia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is exactly correct. A bronze buckler parries for the exact same damage values as an iron shield, because the bronze has a parry bonus of 2x but the iron has only 1.5x. The iron has a higher base block though, so if you fail to parry you block more.
      This means if you're good at parrying you can skip upgrading your shield until you get to silver, saving you iron if you're short.

  • @subj3kt17
    @subj3kt17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I was under the impression that Parry Bonus, whether on a shield or weapon, is the amount of extra Block Power the item gets on a parry and that the bonus damage you do is a static bonus regardless of what you parried with. That would explain why a bronze buckler could parry 150+ points of damage with a high enough skill, so I'm fairly certain at least that much is true. Plus, you can get that bonus damage just by staggering an enemy with your attacks, which has nothing to do with parrying.

      he is confusing crits with parry bonus definitely you can get the special sound and damage from any stagger, even without parry. That is a separate bonus for striking while they are vulnerable and is more like the backstab bonus than parry bonus. Pretty sure parry bonus just means if you time a block perfectly you block more than you normally can before the damage bleeds over.

  • @Ben-kd8tp
    @Ben-kd8tp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yes, Parry bonus is a bonus to your Block Power when you parry. A Shield or weapon with Block Power of 20 can block put to 40 damage on a parry if it has a Parry Bonus of 2x. From what I can tell, all attacks do 2x damage after a successful parry.

    Im kinda sad the serpent shield doesnt have the parry feature. I got really good at parrying and sticked to my non upgraded bronze shield up until the silver age where i immediately crafted and fully upgraded my serpent shield.
    I love the looks of it and it has pretty good blocking stats for my current state of progression in the game but i am really close to just crafting a silver shield so i can parry again since stagger damage is so useful and ends long tedious fights much quicker. Anyone else in the same boat here?

  • @DeyvsonMoutinhoCaliman

    A glancing blow is when you hit something else together with the enemy. Like, if you are doing 50 damage against greydwarves, and you hit a tree together with the greydwarf, you will do 25 damage to each. If you hit 3 things, the damage will be divided by 3. That's why enclosed spaces are not good to test damage. Also the earth itself count as a hit, so if you are on an uneven terrain you will often hit the ground and halve your damage. This game has to allow us to hit down, because on a hill we have the ridiculous situation where we can't hit an enemy below us, so fighting hill up is better than fighting hill down, which is not the case in real life.

    • @AuthorityCat

      Definitely longer stun. The battleaxe, for example, is nearly useless because by the time the enemy is out of stun you're only halfway through your followup swing. In that case I'd be using the secondary attack but as far as I'm aware that stun animation is identical to a parry.

      You're correct, he misunderstood the mechanic. Parry bonus only gives you a multiplier to your block power. That is why he mistook 2x and 1.5x at the end of the video, the buckler gives 2 while others give 1.5. the bonus damage comes from free crits on staggered enemies. Nothing to do with the parry bonus stat.

    • @HavocHank
      @HavocHank 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JSauce5k yup. Staggered enemies always take double damage and is unaffected by parry bonus. Because of how damage varies, it's hard to tell unless you actually take the time to calculate averages from a lot of hits.

  • @Xendrasch
    @Xendrasch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    From the values you showed one can deduce:
    Total_Block_ Power = Shield_Block_Power * (1 + 0.005*Blocking_Skill)
    rounded to the closest integer.
    Or in words, each skill point increases your block power by 0.5 %.
    Thus with 100 skill one has 50% more block power.
    Somehow the tower shields seem very inefficient compared to the round shields. They are havier, slow you down more, cannot parry and have only a bit more block power. With parrying the round shields block almost double the damage of tower shields, which makes absolutely no sense. Do they have a hidden advantage? Maybe a higher solid angle in which they block?

    • @AuthorityCat
      @AuthorityCat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it's just unbalanced. Two handed weapons suffer from this as well. The battleaxe has a parry-like stun on its secondary attack but the primary attack is so slow you can't follow up before the enemy is out of the stun. It also takes a huge amount of stamina, which is yet another downside of tower shields too.

    I really don't like how tower shields are handled in the game. Their block value isn't high enough to justify the slower movement speed and giving up parry force, since mobility and parry are the most important things in the game for combat. They need to add a special ability to tower shields.

    • @LordKilmir
      @LordKilmir 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think tower shields should get a bonus to shielded angle. Like all of 180 degrees in front or something. That would make it better for multiple enemies with the bucklers better for singles.
      That said, right now the biggest tower shield almost always blocks all the damage of the hardest hitting enemies. I think only the 3rd hit from Fuling berserkers regularly smash through it. So balance wise it's pretty ok. At least for solo play. I understand multiplayer increases damage and hp scaling so it gets nastier.

      @@MarkGeuel The Combat Overhaul mod does a great job of exactly that and I hope they implement something very similar. With the mod tower shields block all damage, overflow goes into stamina and ... this is critical.. they allow you to go into negative stamina. So basically with a tower shield, even if you just have 1 point of stamina you will always block 100% of the damage. Going into negative stamina is punishing though as you can't do very much except hobble around and you're going to take longer to regen so you have to be tactical. I think the changes really demonstrate how the parry ability can be balanced out with tower shields in the game.

He’s got the iron gamer now and I’m full iron as well, we sometimes still do it but it’s not really necessary anymore. Early on we’d get our asses kicked any other way lol

    My biggest question, because you pointed out that an Axe has it's own parry multiplier and knockback force.... How does that work when using a shield? If you use a Tall Shield and an Axe, does the shield take priority over the Axe's defensive capabilities or...? Do they add / multiply together? I'm very curious.

    are you sure the weapon damage is calculated like that? with the range in yellow and the potential max at lvl 100 in orange? I thought it might be DPS in orange and damage range per swing in yellow

    • @gotyam
      @gotyam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The orange number stays the same regardless of weapon skill, but your damage per swing is always in the yellow range (unless it is a backstab or attacking a staggered/parried enemy). The yellow number also goes up as weapon skill goes up.

    They've changed the scale shield to have the same block stats as the blackmetal shield now, but the scale has a higher movement penalty and no parry, so it's straight up worse than blackmetal now.

    I find parrying gets really dicey when fighting multiple end-game enemies at once. I still prefer shields but I could see tower shield having the advantage in those situations since parry is less useful. Alas that would be very hard to quantify and test in a controlled environment.

    • @darthroflex
      @darthroflex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In situations with multiple enemies I found out that it doesn't really matter cuz you'll run out of stamina by blocking either way so the best way to deal with them is to go full offense and trim down their numbers as quickly as you can... At least in solo-mode.

    • @masift1494
      @masift1494 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. When you’re being attacked by multiple fulings at once, parrying is useless. It’s better to run away and whack them with a frostner or just kite them and shoot arrows

  • @pookznl

    Firespark, what about the movement speed reduction? Halfway the video all reduction speeds said -20% (0%). Does blocking skill effect it? Andmaybe for armor

    • @sanelruznic3790
      @sanelruznic3790 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No the % in the brackets (x%) is all movement speed reduction combined, lets say you have a tower shield -20%, an one hand weapon -5% and one mail armor piece -5% the shield would say movement speed reduction -20% (-30%) because it adds -20,-5 and -5 together. So the number infront of the brackets is for the item itself and the number inside the brackets is your total movement penalty from all items combined that you are carrying right now. Cheers ;)

    I don't think the bronze buckler really gives a x2 parry bonus. I think it's x1.5 just like all other shields and it's a typo in the tool tip. The black metal shield punch damage was 9.4 and 8.4 at 10:11. The bronze buckler damage was 10.1, 8.2, and 8.3 at 10:30. That doesn't seem like much difference to me.

    • @skybrad5988
      @skybrad5988 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They all do 2x damage after a parry. The parry bonus is multiplied with the Block Power on a parry to increase your block amount. It has nothing to do with damage.
