Watching this on my 77" A95L that I took delivery of just yesterday. Tested out streaming content, PS5 gaming, and dedicated 4K blu ray player. Hands down the best TV I've ever owned!
Yeah, I kinda wish I had gotten this TV over the S95C. I haven't seen the motion interpolation on the Sony yet, but, I loved my Sony 900E for gaming. S95C is amazing, to be fair.
@@DarkoBert-ob6yr I'd prefer 65 if you're looking for more sharpness in picture and mostly for watching general content. If you're going to watch only 4k movies, may be 77 (also depends on your budget)
Just got mine last night. It is incredible. I didn't go to bed until 2am because I was too busy watching and playing! The big jump over the last two year's Sony OLEDs is how bright it is. Also huge. Nice work, Sony!
I've had mine for just over a week now and it is crertainly the best TV I have ever seen. It replaced my A95K (which has become my bedroom TV) and the difference in brightness is staggering. Truly a superb TV. Not for everyone due to the cost but if you can afford it it is spectacular.
My A95K was calibrated and the A95L is significantly brighter OOtB. If you run your set on Cinema or Professional mode or one of the custom modes it is significantly brighter.
For folks who're considering X95L, here's a tip (which wasn't mentioned in X95L review). Go to settings, choose Custom, select Picture. Inside Picture, select Ambient Optimisation Pro, under that menu, check if Ambient light sensor is preset to 'On'. I installed the TV today and was just frustrated with the picture until I set the Ambient light sensor to 'Off', PQ just dramatically changed from ordinary to brilliant! Also, I changed the live color settings from Off to Medium. Only talking about HDR nits and local dimming doesn't help. Hope this helps.
For those who are on the fence, the Sony X95L 85 inch is outrageously jaw-dropping, mouth-watering, I'm at a loss of qualitative adjectives, seriously. Watching Dolby Vision is no short of mesmerizing. An absolute 10 out of 10 for HDR, Dolby Vision contents. 85 inch does matter in giving the picture cinematic 3D realistic look and depth. The colour, the contrast, the black level, insanely good. I'm happy I decided for this one over A95L. Since I don't see any shortcoming whatsoever with X95L (may be the only minor but negligible issue that the screen does reflect some light), I'm finally able to settle on it after long quest for TV with best PQ and for home cinema experience. It's a one time buy, expensive yes, but totally worth it IMHO.
Unfortunately, the Sony A95L 85-inch model does not exist and is therefore not on the market. More concretely, we're stopping at 77 inches. That's too bad for you, even if it was a nice try. :)
@@Sas-wk9lj To say that the SONY BRAVIA XR-85X95L is better than the SONY BRAVIA XR-77A95L ... in my opinion it's clearly the opposite and I won't be able to go back to its predecessor.
As an ex-photographer's (5 years) and ex-cable TV tech (23 years), this is my opinion. It is truly the best. The definition and color range is so good, you actually perceive a depth in the image. You can see the different objects in that flat image, but your brain can realistically distinguish which one is in front of the others. You almost want to reach out and touch something inside the image. It's not a full 3D image, but it feels like it has a discernable depth. That slight "you can touch me", perception takes LED to a whole new level.
I saw that same display with the A80L above the A95L. While the A80L is a very nice TV, the A95L was soooo much better, it wasn’t subtle. Very noticeable!!
Do you all think it was $2,100 better than the A80L? That’s the current price difference at BB for the 77”. I’m having buyers paralysis between these 2 and the G3 lol can’t seem to pull the trigger
@@martinshaw5245it’s not 2K+ better then the A80L IMHO. Best Buy isn’t a good source of information even though you’re staring right at it. They manipulate settings to draw contrast between models for the purpose of selling whatever they make the most on or want to sell.
@@martinshaw5245 honestly the A80L is really good. If you dial it in or get it professionally calibrated it’s almost reference level. The upscale is way better than anything LG or Samsung has. (You’re not always watching 4k video). I have cable and it makes Comcast’s cable look good. And you know that’s not easy. Ha. I have the A80J and I’m on medium peak luminance and think it’s bright enough. I have had my tv for 2 years and I still look at the picture with admiration and awe sometimes.
@@jackmanning1117I just compared these 3 in best buy for over an hour and left with the Sony. Even though it was the least bright, it was the most visually striking when watching the demo content.
The following 3 would be fantastic. The big 3 flagship 95L, 95C G3 OLED shootout. The little brother shootout: The A80L, C3, S90C. Also do the Sony Master last 3 years shootout. The A90J at 65 is 1499 on certain sights. Trying to upgrade my 55 A80K. I’m very interested in that tv still. But great video btw. 95L looks awesome just don’t ever see the 65 getting below 2499. Which is what I think was lowest the 95K got.
On the whole eARC thing, I think it makes sense to use an HDMI 2.1 port because it allows you to use one of the several HDMI 2.1-compatible receivers and then have several extra ports. At this price tier, I think we’re looking right at a demographic who’d be likely to use such a setup.
My thinking too. However I haven´t seen any video confirming that all HDMI 2.1 functions will pass through the newest receivers. Because I wonder if the RXs need the same (at least) or to future proof better MORE HDMI 2.1 functions than the TV. I am talking about ALLM, QMS, BFI etc. etc. (just to name a few). Can anyone answer this?
@@Jojken Yeah I'm wondering that too. Because on my A95K, you have to choose between having 120hz/VRR or having Dolby Vision support on the 2.1 ports. So if I set the eARC port to enable DV (since I'm watching movies and streaming shows on it through my receiver), then my Xbox or PS5 won't be able to use VRR.
I am passing through PS5 via Sony HT-A9(receiver) and it works. I'm using subscription apps to play the Dolby Vision content and playing my PS5 with VRR if that helps.
@@TLEE1977 The PS5 doesn't even support Dolby Vision so idk what you're talking about. Do you mean you're using the TV built in apps? That's a completely different story and not related to the HDMI ports on the TV
I have the Sony A95L 65 with the HT-A9, with the SW5 and using the TV as the center channel. By far, it is the best picture and sound I have ever experienced. Great job, Sony.
Do you notice a difference in timbre between the soundbar speakers and the tv’s center channel? I’ve read while the system works together well, the tv speakers doesn’t sound to be from the same family as the soundbar etc speakers
I'm SO JEALOUS! I start saving for the A95L after I finish the 96TB Retro Beast...hopefully the price will go down by then with the A95M coming to fruition. I wish you were my neighbor to alieviate the anticipation.
Great to hear that Caleb is going to do OLED TV comparison. That should be great. Wish he has a Panasonic TV as well. He did say previously that the built-in apps are not that great as Apple TV box.
As per my experience goes, you need to be almost 11' to 12' away from the 85 inch panel to feel the sharpness and depth in picture. For 2.35:1 aspect ratio movies and video games, you can afford to sit nearer. The TV series 16:9 content with face close-ups can look oddly big if you are sitting close to the TV like about 6-7 feet. That may be taken as a pro or con depending on how big your room is and how willing you're to sit 11 feet away from the TV (it'll be as good as buying 77 inch or 65 inch TV and sitting 6-7 feet away from the screen to get the same effect). The real question is with anamorphic aspect ratio in the case of most of the movies, we often don't quite able to get that comfort in viewing with smaller screens. My thumb rule is if you're planning to watch movies 90% of the time, consider bigger panels. If for general content with occasional movies, 65 to 77 inch should be okay. Hope this helps. As far as the quality goes, QD-OLED is superior PQ than mini led for most of the contents with one drawback of shadow crush as unlike in mini led which has better' shadow details at the cost of little less contrast and slight lack of depth in picture. But don't take it as a general trend, for some contents mini led excels, in other qd-oled does.
One drawback of mini led however is in total dark room, you'll notice some blooming if you're 1) consciously looking for it 2) in picture with flat dark grey screen that sometimes momentarily appears just before the movie or just before the show is about to start. This could be annoying when you spent 4-5 grands for a TV. In OLEds you won't obviously get this issue. But to be fair, shadow crush with patch of black in the face's shadow area or in the back of the hair or in the background is equally frustrating in QD-OLED/OLEDs.
Very happy with the A95L so far. Pleasantly surprised with the improvements over the first gen QD-OLED units. No TV is perfect, but this checks more than enough boxes for me. Currently running it in my office with the HT-A7000, RS5s, and SW5. Likely going to upgrade the main viewing area with this TV as well.
To follow up - Upgraded the main viewing area as well to the 77" A95L. Hoping future software updates iron out all the kinks, but very happy with the TVs.
True. I have a 77A80 and I'm waiting for QD-OLED to go 83" or bigger and at a somewhat reasonable price too. You can have it all. You just have to be patient!
I don’t know about you guys, but my LG C3 77” that i’m rocking it’s absolutely gorgeous…this Sony might be the best especially because of the brightness level, but my LG C3 it is in a very bright room and have no issues with it,I even find it too bright sometimes…this Sony tv is double the price,so my personal opinion if I would have to choose one of them I would always go with LG C3,because judging by the price and the quality of this tv it’s insane…that’s just my two cents opinion,of a happy LG C3 owner.
Just ordered the Blackbird switcher, Caleb. I hope this works as well as you say it does. I hold your audio and video suggestions in high regard. I would have ordered the A95L too, buuut I can’t afford a new tv lol. Appreciate your videos man, you’ve been of great help.
Kudos to you and Classy for mentioning the Dolby Vision issues that Ive been reading about on the forum. This will move Sony to get going on firmware update fix (hopefully)
We don’t really know if Sony will or can fix them. They might be a compatible issue with new media tek chips. So that ruins this tv unless you force HDR10 and never use internal Apps.
It wouldn't be a Sony TV release without there being a potentially obscure but actually enjoyment killing issue which we pray to be "fixed by firmware". Still at least they have Android TV which already puts them at the top of the pack.
Ive heard about a beginning of November firmware release, so prob another week or so and this will be a non issue. For the record the last firmware had this issue with hdr10, while the DV was fine, so definitely not a permnanent chipset issue or anything.
Based on your previous reviews, I ordered my LG G3 65” last Monday, and it arrives tomorrow (Friday), and now on the eve of it arriving, I’ve just seen this 😂 Not to worry, there’s a fair price gap between them, and I did have a look at the LG in a shop before ordering and was blown away with the image quality, so I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. Also, great choice in 4K Blu-ray Player (not enough reviews out there on the various options), I did have a look at that one but couldn’t stretch to the price, so opted for a more budget friendly Panasonic DPUB820, which should hopefully drive the LG appropriately. Looking forward to your comparison video of the Samsung, LG and Sony coming up, and thanks for putting in the effort to create these outstanding reviews! 👍
I have the 77 LG G3 and the Panasonic UB820. Beautiful picture, I may have opted for this but I'm very happy gaming and watching movies. I also don't think they're $1000 apart though.
After the G3 has been on for a few minutes, gently rest the back of your hand on the center of the screen and you'll immediately see why that TV is not recommended.
Thanks for the reply’s, much appreciated. Good to know the UB820 is a decent match for the G3 👍 Thanks for the heads up on the G3 regarding temperature, I’ll have a check of it and see what it’s like. I’m sure LG wouldn’t sell a TV that over heats, but I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks for the feedback 👍
I totally agree that this is the best OLED TV on the market today, but my only issue like you is only 2 HDMI 2.1 Ports, I mention this on other You Tube reviews and took a lot of heat for it, for Sony to demand the premium price for this TV, Sony should give the Consumer the best in all areas, Great job Sony on your Processing, now give me four 2.1 HDMI Ports, them you will get a perfect 10 from me!!
I’ve had my a95l for about 10 days imho… this TV is not just an incremental improvement over last year‘s TV or any other TV that came out this year Sony went a level above the competition example …the S 95C is a colorful TV as colorful as the Sony a 95L but the S 95C appears flat the a 95L gives off a 3-D effect through The bright colors, the image processing and extremely bright, specular highlights
I went for the A95k, it was a £1000 cheaper than the A95L . I don’t think the A95L is worth the extra money ,it has software bugs and screen uniformity issues , I also prefer the solid stand on the A95K as it’s much better quality. Newer doesn’t always mean better in my opinion.
Sony did it again, they are on fire and much ahead of competitors in terms of audio and video quality. One thing that is very stupid at this point are people complaining about the price as always. Here’s the thing if you want the best you gotta pay for it. It’s like saying a 500$ wine is 5 times better than a 100$ bottle of wine, no it’s definitely not but if you care about what you get out of that bottle of wine compare to other wine it makes sense.
Sony's motion handling is still bad and their TVs are priced way too high. Sony fans never seem to believe that these sets are overpriced and overrated and have been since the CRT era. As a former CET I can tell you that Sony TVs are not head and shoulders above everyone else's. Sony at least used to be innovative. Now they simply slap their electronics and name on someone else panel and proclaim it as being the best.
@@classicgalactica5879 Sony's motion handling has been heralded as the best. You sir lose all credibility on that statement alone. The ValueElectronics TV Shootout just took place with dozens of professional tv calibrators and reviewers. They all agreed that Sony's motion handling is the best. You aren't more certified than those guys. Anyways keep hating on Sony all you want but all manufacturers do this now. Just so you know Sony doesn't make their own product but they do source from manufacturer partners and they do use proprietary technology. They use the specs that Sony asks for them to manufacturer. The QD-OLEDs are made from Samsung Display which is a different entity than Samsung Electronics. It technically doesn't belong to Samsung either they also import from Samsung Display and other vendors. LG is probably the only manufacturer to still manufacturer in house. Oh actually I lied Sharp started making their own panels again as well. I imagine Sony will start to buy from them again for LCD panels. The business has changed but one thing remains Sony and Panasonic still hold the majority of Patents for proprietary technology. That is why they are still the best and it will take decades for Chinese to catch up.
Awesome review as always. Looking forward to the comparisons video. I am holding back until Sony comes with an '83 or better yet '85 QD-OLED to make the upgrade, I am still very much enjoying your past favorite Sony A90J at 83" which looks phenomenal still! Thanks for all your reviews and informative yet entreating content.
I'm exactly where you are - holding on to my A90J until a 90-100" model comes out that's better since that TV still looks so damn good. I guess I'm not understanding the barrier to making a bigger QD-OLED panels so we can finally have a viable option instead of a projector for a home theater room.
I’m really interested to see a review of the Sony A80L or even the lower end A75L. Since both models are very similar but the a75 is cheaper, seeing how they cut costs in ways they didn’t mention. A side by side review / comparison would be really great
If you are a fan of OLED this one has to be on your shortlist. I prefer mini-LED and a TV in a more sensible size, as soon as the prices drop i am buying one. These sets are not cheap, Sony don't do cheap for a good reason, but the reliability will be appreciated and you are unlkely to need the 5 year warranty. For now i will keep on saving, the next time i want quality, no more of the substandard ones from China.
My dad bought a fancy Sony. Flaky as heck, died in like 4 years. I bought some cheap-a Element... dang thing still working 10 years later, good as new. Sony has been known to have quality issues, so no guarantees.
@@jasonhurdlow6607 some of that is just pure random luck though. As we know, literally anything made by human hands can fail. Sometimes a $5,000 TV will fail in six months and a $500 one will last 16 years. Even with a Sony (the most reliable TV brand on the market) you can still run across a bad unit from time to time. This is why it is ALWAYS smart to get the extended coverage/protection plans offered by your retailer. Until we can figure out how to predict the future, those are always money very well spent.
I love Sony OLED's, but it's kind of frustrating that this 2023 model didn't come out until late October, but it appears it was worth the wait. Now, if only we could get it in a bigger size!
Yup, 75" TVs are definitely on their way out. The 85" to 98" are gonna be the next "best thing" in the next 5 years. The 85" Sony X95L is looking really good right now for $4,299.00 and is a very tiny step below the 77" A95L. If the A95L came in an 85" I would definitely get it!
@@billtinnell2206I think there’s a size practical limitation though depending on the user Getting a 98”+ tv up a set of stairs to the 2nd floor theatre room can already be a hindrance to some lol; no big deal if it’s a living room tv of course
@@billtinnell2206 The luxury tax they charge for going from the 70's to 80's is sadly still absurd for most models. Perhaps if they get to more 98" models, the 80 inchers won't be the place they do the extra markup.
I actually disagree that making the eARC port one of the 4k 60 ports is the best idea. There are a lot of soundbars and receivers now that support 8k 60 or 4k 120 with ALLM and VRR with many more HDMI ports that can handle those formats such as my Marantz Cinema 40. So if Sony moved eARC to a port that could only do 4k 60 that would severely limit the usefullness of the HDMI's on my receiver. The only real solution that would be best for everyone would be for MediaTech to finally build an SOC with 4 x 48GBps ports or Sony should dump them and use whatever LG and Samsung are using for their HDMI SOC.
My thinking too. However I haven´t seen any video confirming that all HDMI 2.1 functions will pass through the newest receivers. With all the terrible backlash MediaTek caught this past year for changing their announced plans for the Pentonic 1000 at the LAST MINUTE, you KNOW they are working as fast as they can to create a version of that SoC that incorporates 4 HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) ports. Keep in mind here that LG and Samsung develop their processors internally so they have more flexibility on their feature set and build-out. However, the "Secret Sauce" for Sony's processors has always really been in their algorithms. A processor is only as good as the code that is executed inside of it. Sony's greatest strength, and what has ALWAYS set them apart from all their competitors is their understanding of color science and their ability to write the best, most effective code to run inside of their TV processors. As was made abundantly clear by the folks over at RTings a few weeks ago, Sony's processing is head and shoulders above and beyond any other TV manufacturer out there today. It's one thing to design hardware that can match what Sony does. It's an entirely other thing though to try and match them with the software and AI tech that runs INSIDE of that hardware. As we have seen more than a few demonstrations of over the past five years now though, Sony is simply in a class by themselves when it comes this. And, at least so far, no one else have even managed to get close.
Woah!!!! This review is even better than I thought it was going to be and I thought it was going to be pretty great!! (Anything but trash!!! Ha ha!) Also I kind of had to laugh at the look on your face when you mentioned getting mail that you didn’t want people to know what it was, not of COURSE that I have experienced anything like THAT!! Anyway, here are a couple of quick questions: 1) What size is this TV? 77inch?Sorry have no sense of scale and couldn’t tell. 2) If you still have the A95K, can you possibly use the A95L’s remote with the K to see if it works, particularly the dedicated TH-cam button? Please?😜🥰❣️ I have been wanting to get the 77 inch A95L all along, but after this review I really REALLY want it!! Hopefully the DV thing gets ironed out quickly! I WILL have to wait to get the L (due to finances), but once I do, I will move the 65 inch “K” up into my bedroom to replace the 55 inch “blob” tv currently there! In the meantime, I was hoping to at least get the new remote if it works to tide me over. I watch a lot of TH-cam and really would make great use of the dedicated TH-cam button if it works with the “K”. Excellent and fun review, Caleb!! I so respect your inserting the update about the DV issue, plus it was very smoothly done. Thanks so much!! Going to check out some merch now!🥳 P.S. I really took my time with my review of your review so I wouldn’t have to edit it. I noticed that my last comment on the Rode system received the coveted DT heart but I never saw it because I edited it. My goal is to get this in one take. 🥰
I'm glad you're going to review the Hisense UX because I have seen ZERO actual reviews of it. And another TV would be the Sharp XLED. As of now there are only two places in the US where you can see it, and both of them are thousands of miles away. A review on the XLED would be great considering what we saw at the 'Shootout'. There's NO WAY it can really be that bad when Sharp is claiming it to be their flagship for 2023.
I just purchased an A95L, from Best Buy, per your recommendation, and you are correct... It is awesome.! My only disappointment is the Sony HT400 Sound Bar that I also purchased.. The performance of the sound bar is not very good.. Have you heard of any issues with the HT400 sound bar ?
I prefer what they did with the eARC. I have the opposite problem where my Samsung QN94A is wall mounted with a single HDMI 2.1 port connected to my receiver but because the eARC port isnt 2.1 compatible i can't get dolby atmos out of the built in apps and it makes the usability way more complex for the family.
This TV having only two HDMI 2.1 ports is a deal breaker for me. If I wanted to upgrade and I had to chose between the Sony A95L and LG G3, I'm picking the G3 a million times over. Also The 65 inch G3 is $900 cheaper than the 65 inch A95L.
@@userk2876 because it’s a flagship model with that same complaint about the previous year models. LG B series has 2x HDMI 2.1 ports, while the C and up have 4. Will make gaming enthusiasts lean toward the LG TVs.

The tv sound is more important than you think because people like me are waiting months for their soundbar to come in and have to rely on tv speakers in the meantime. Glad this one’s no slouch
Im living in a rather old building and it’s not worth getting a soundsystem because my neighbors would hear the upgrade just as much as me. If I’m watching something I’m mostly using headphones with my Apple TV but I’d like my TV Speakers to good if they are used.
I want to see the Smart OS’s go head to head (Tizen, Web os and GoogleTV). No one seems to have really compared all of them and how it feels to navigate with them and I think if you’re buying a several thousand dollar tv I want to know how it feels to use it.
Part of the reason why I don't think you see many TV OS comparisons is because right now at least, there really is no comparison. GoogleTV is widely considered to be far and away the smartest, most flexible and most advanced TV OS - and it's not even close. Now, that may change over the next three or four years, but at least for now, I have yet to see a single reviewer out there that picked ANY TV OS over GoogleTV. And, for most of them, it's not even close.
For all of you complaining about the Sony cost difference being too high. This TV has the best sound quality out of all the OLED TV's. I do not own a sound bar nor plan to buy one. A good Sound bar cost around $700 or more. Therefore by buying this particular TV and not buying a sound bar. I just removed this argument. I have owned LG's and Samsung TV's. I had issues with both brands. Here is what I know. My relative has worked in Sales at Appliance stores for 30 years. He told me the sales staff he knows have told him Sony is the best Brand TV to buy which is partly why Sony's are expensive. Secondly I was in a Best Buy one day in the Magnolia room. A customer looking at TV's told me he works for a video processing company. He told me Sony TV's video processing is better than Samsung and LG. I plan on buying this particular TV 65 inch model. Currently Amazon has it for $3000. I am hoping to try and get it under $3000 likely around Black Friday.
I’ve had the 65” with a HT-A9/SW3 (medium sized lounge in a semi detached house, so SW5 would’ve been overkill) over a week now. Phenomenal tv and haven’t experienced any DV issues either via apps or UHD disc. Playing Spider-Man 2 in fidelity mode with VRR 40FPS feels so smooth and doesn’t make me miss 60FPS at all. Have my series x connected to HT-A9 as there’s a port for 4K/120 pass through. I’m also using the TV as a center speaker with the sound system and really enjoy the fact I can control the whole audio system volumes from main remote control via Bravia Sync options that open up in the menus My only gripe is that the Disney+ app on the tv doesn’t seem to pick up DV content, whereas all the other apps do, except Bravia Core which doesn’t support it. My now older OLED AF9 does pick up Dolby Vision on the Disney app. Hope there’s an update soon
What type of access do they give to Bravia Core (is it one year free)? What is the picture quality like, it has the highest bitrate advertised for any streaming service, almost blu-ray levels. What is your internet speed, is it below the 115 they recommend?
@@ShwetankYa 24 months free plus ten free credits. Picture quality via pure stream is beautiful especially with the imax enhanced movies. Dolby Atmos support too. Hey, you need one of the HDMI 2.1 ports to be eARC so that you can pass through 2.1 contend to it via a 2.1 capable home theater receiver. That allows you to use only 1 cable to the TV and then you can run you XBOX, PS5 and other future 2.1 devices through the AMP.
Totally agree with the eARTC gripe. Basically means sacrificing an HDMI 2.1 spots unless you have a Soundbar with HDMI 2.1 passthrought (but I don't even know if that's a thing).
There are some reviews out there already on that and although the TV works well as a center channel, the HT-A9 is just so incredibly good on its own, that they say if you own an HT-9, you will likely get better results just letting it handle all of the audio on its own. Every review I have seen so far of the HT-A9 have all called it essentially the single best/most immersive (non-receiver-based) surround sound system they have ever heard beating every other soundbar-based system out there for its ability to make you feel like you are IN the movie you are watching.
"Protective black rap, reminds me of back in the day when you'd get mail that you didn't want people to know what it is", I totally got that, I was there in there too😂

Hey Caleb, Love your presentation style. Quick question. I have had my 65inch A95L for a few days now. Love everything about it so far but I have noticed something I don't like. I have a small window on the left side of my room. Ambient light seems to really hurt this TV. The screen is very grey which kinda ruins the entire point of the deep blacks from an OLED. It looks like the screen scatters the light. Nobody that I have seen on youtube is bringing this up. Is this something you have noticed also? At night this TV is down right perfect.
I've this same problem with my S95C. It may be something to do with qd-oled panels. Its black is raised (slightly grey) even with room lights. That pitch black is missing until you watch it in total darkness. My Samsung F8500 plasma had ALR that would help picture looking contrasty even in the presence of overhead ambient light. I wonder if they used any ALR with the qd-oled panels.
@@walidhannaoui1802 I meant to say natural light. But ya. It's very grey with natural light and minor grey with lighting from over head lights. Just up against my kd65x9300e it extremely noticeable. The x9300e remains pitch black even with the sun on it
A tv in this price range should not have concessions like the HDMI ports... and why TV's still have 100mbit ethernet, even a top model like this is beyond me. Yes, use wifi... but no, it's a completely stationary appliance and cable is still the fastest and most stable connection. In my household only mobile devices are wireless, everything else is cabled.
Sure its good but like for the 65 inch version its 3840euros where i live and the 65 inch s90c is 1740 euros.... I can buy 2x65inch s90c's and still have 360 euro to spare for a soundbar for example...
The picture on the s95c is super colorful but flat and comicbook like. The picture on the a95l is three dimensional and life-like. The sharpness and depth catches your eye and is memorable. It reminds me of the old trinitron crts. Just a beautiful deep picture.
I have been looking at the s95c picture for 6 months at home. Playing games, youtube, movies. It’s super colorful, but flat and looks like a mid level tv. The qd oled tech is amazing, but imo stay away from samsung for the poor quality(mines been repaired twice and still broken) trash remote and ui/os, and the flat processing. Back to sony for me.
@@Jim-sn7hw Not sure what you were doing wrong with your S95C I’ve had mine for the same amount of time and I’ve adjusted the Ana peak to achieve 2000 nits it’s looks mind shattering three dimensional and just a deep picture! You can see on my page it’s far from being flat or mid range you’d be crazy to think so!
Whilst the A95L is a great TV; the performance gap between it, the G3 and S95C is so minimal that there is simply no way it justifies the price premium Sony is charging. For example in the U.K. the 77” G3 and S95C are priced at £4,000 ($4,991) and the A95L is at £6,000 ($7,487). There is NO WAY the A95L is £2,000 ($2,495) worth of performance better than the G3 and S95C.
@@Zinnet85yeah but the G3 looks arguably as good, like this TV just does slightly better that you don’t even notice as much as you notice your wallet.. so to me personally, the pendulum swings in favor of LG for me. I don’t want to talk soundbars, but Samsung blows those two out of the water and Klipsch is the best
@@Zinnet85its literally not the best lol. The big prices makes people think its the best just like they think appme products are the best but they are only the best in fooling customers and paying reviewers like this channel
If the HDMI E-ARC Port wasn't HDMI 2.1 then any 2.1 needs or sources connected to your AVR wouldn't pass to the TV so it kind of has to be a 2.1 port. Whether more 2.1 devices would connect to the TV direct or amp is the debate though I guess
Love the TV. I have the 77-inch version .... However the TV intermittently keeps switching from internal speakers to the soundbar via hdmi. I had heard this was a historical problem with Sony TVs but I would have thought surely not with a brand new version. Not 100% happy although picture is amazing.
That sound like an ARC related issue. Hard to know if it is the mediatek chip in this case, but ARC issues are the bane of my existence. Every TV has one that annoys me. Sorry you’re dealing with it too.
I have the 77" too, but my TV doesn't do that. Maybe try switching your HDMI cable or update any potential software. If cable doesn't help, try a different speaker to isolate the problem.
When you say intermittently, are you saying this happens in the middle of watching content? Or does it happen at startup, and then stabilizes? If the TV is switching back and forth, the most likely cause would be a drop-out of the EDID, which flags to the TV that an external sound source is connected via HDMI. That wavering signal flag could be caused by a number of things, the most likely of which would be the Dragon, a faulty cable, or a cable that doesn’t comply with HDMI 2.1 (though that should not be necessary, I’ve found it sometimes is). The least likely, but still possible, issue would be the Mediatek SOC in the Sony TV. If that were the case, Sony would certainly want to iron it out, but it’s then possible that Sony would also have to rely on Mediatek’s cooperation to some degree for the fix. And as we’ve seen in the past, that can slow things down.
@@Caleb_Denison Intermittent during the viewing. This happens regardless of source (Directv/Blu-Ray/AppleTV Streaming). All HDMI cords are 8k 2.1 so I was hoping the whole thing was on autopilot. I don't see any options under EARC on the A95L to "force" it to only be "external" speakers like on the LG I have.
I just got my Sony A95L a week ago and I’m loving it and I upgraded from the Sony A90J …and playing Spider-Man 2 and the game looks really really good on the A95L….worth every penny
Dude good for u. Hey but A95L is like $$$$$ , there a lot of ppl do NOT watch TVs no time (aside school/work, partying, dating or like just medical residency /nursing etc.) they just wanna have random tv siting in living room. So they are looking for quick n easy option. :) :) U7K is best for that. Good for u for getting A95L . For light tv watcher, or like students or even Xmas gifts for teen kids, parents, U7K is like insane deal. 😊
Having my HDMI 2.1 stuff go through an AVR I would strongly dislike if they divorced the eARC from HDMI 2.1 - but if they made it re-assignable between a 2.1 and 2.0 port that would be a ok compromise. Of course the real fix is making all the ports 2.1 😊
When are you guys going to start reviewing USTs? I enjoyed my cx 77 but I absolutely love my awol3500. Yes blacks and contrast matters; but it’s hard to care as much when you’re watching a 150” projected screen on my wall.
My only concern is abl or the absolutely excessive dimming that happened in game mode on my old Sony oled. It ruined picture quality when it dimmed like that and I really want a deep dive into it to make sure it doesn't do this anymore
@@ToxModmy A80J would disagree with your ridiculous statement lol. Every TV will dim in any mode if there’s static images (like a HUD). The question is how much it dims….
Hi from down under, is it possible to see a future review of the A95L with the HT-A9 sound speakers, to really see if the TV works well as a center speaker. Possible before Black Friday sales, thanks for your reviews, very insightful.
What about Burn-in? Is this still a thing with static elements for 8h of playing the same game? I've heard this could be an issue, especially with QD-OLED compared with standard OLED, and Sony does not perform the screen cleaning consistently which would help preventing the issue, how much about this is true? If I'll buy a TV for 4000€ it should last.
@@bigcdub Meanwhile, back in reality, in the US and Canada the A95K comes with a one (1) year / twelve (month) / 365 days-from-purchase warranty. Said warranty does not cover "permanent image retention or artifacts from extended-duration static viewing."
Hi Caleb, Do you feel like the 85X95L has gotten closer to OLED even if it's the basuc midrange options like A80L. I've been asking for a comparison video but it just looks like we aren't going to get it from anyone. I really want to see how far LCD has come vs OLED. Actually I want to get a reviewers opinion on this.
I already commented on this. There's virtually no difference between S95C QD-OLED and X95L mini led backlit LCD. In some contents Sammy OLED excels whereas in some X95L. So, hard to tell which one is better. Both are competent. If size is what you prefer as well as do not want to be bothered about pixel burn in, LCD is way to go. Only one gripe that needs mention is that I didn't find any noticable upscaling of low resolution contents as clamed by many reviewers on the X95L. In fact the screen being big, normal low res contents on youtube look awful on the big screen and you can't avoid noticing the artifacs and noise and slightly blurry edges. If you go with 65 inch QD-OLED, Sony or Samsung, it'll be less noticeable. Hope this helps.
@@Sas-wk9lj thanks for your input on the comparison between those 2 units but I disagree on not seeing the difference in upscaling. I have many Sony TV's. But the 85X95L is the first TV that is bigger than 70" that looks great on standard def content including low res cable/satellite feed. I'm seeing detail and less digital noise compression that I didn't believe was possible from compressed trash cable/satellite signals. I do believe you have to use the built in apps for maximum effect because my external devices don't do as great as built in apps. Unless you set your device to output source resolution and have the TV do the upscaling. Then I notice it's just as good. Most external streaming devices don't allow you to do that though and you would have to do it yourself in the settings based on whatever you are watching. I'm curious as to what settings you are using on the 85X95L because the XR Clear feature is real and there's nothing else close to it. It was the first thing I noticed before any single review was even out.
@@LazyCrazyGuy I guess you can help me with Picture calibration if what you're claming to be right. I've the clarity/ sharpness set to 60, Reality Creation set to Auto, Random noise reduction to Off, and Digital noise reduction to Off. What setting would you rather have for the XR Clear Image to work as expected?
@@Sas-wk9lj did you report my comment as spam or misleading? I was trying to help you with the settings on the 85X95L and I just got a message saying I was spamming or scamming. I don't know why my comment would be labeled as such when I was telling you what to watch so you could see the difference of what reality creation was capable of. Anyways I don't know if it was you but my comment was deleted and I received that message and I don't think it's cool when I'm just trying to help.
@@LazyCrazyGuy it obviously wasn't me. I already posted a question as a reply to your comment, right? I didn't even see any reply from your end with suggestions on settings.
Very helpful review. Had pretty much settled on getting the S95C and Sammy’s best Sound bar for Atmos BUT saw comparison between S95C & A95L and the superior clarity of the Sony was so dramatic I’m forced to reconsider. Is it worth the extra $1K+? Maybe. Depends, in part, on what my best solution is for Atmos! One of the advantages of the Samsung setup was that expensive soundbar was a good all-in-one solution. Normally, the Sony is only $600 more but the Samsung can be had with a healthy discount-the Sony, full price. (and I may be forced to wall mount the Sony because my console is close to the width of the Sony-need to get the ruler out! That too adds to the cost. A center pedestal *looks* better but Sony has always been slow to catch on to these “creature comfort” issues while getting the tech right). Anyway, during this black friday season, am trying to make a decision- any suggestions? I could probably get the Samsung 11.1.4 soundbar and use with the Sony, although Ouch! that’s expensive at $1500 (less whatever discount I might find).
@@PSYCHOV3N0M U have that wrong, All pro panels use Antiglare coating , search it . Glossy Panel is used for OLED to boost brightness thats all. What Picture Quality ? The price should knock a couple of points off the final review score. The competition is significantly cheaper for damn near the same performance. Diminishing returns should figure into your points scale, otherwise you’ll have gullible people overspending for no reason.
Thanks for explaining the contrast/brightness Situation with OLED at 12:00 min! I get a small brain fit everytime people talk about "infinite contrast", but they don't measure the actual steps!
I really wish they'd sell cheaper TVs with all the audio stuff ripped out. Nobody spending this much on a TV is going to use the garbage built-in speakers anyway. It should just be similar to how you can get CPUs without integrated graphics.
The people "spending this much" don't care about the small fraction of cost savings that would come with a "soundless" or sound-degraded variant. Couple that with developing, certifying, warehousing, and maintaining two different SKUs and yeah... if you want a cheaper TV, buy a lower-end model. Are you really comparing scavenging CPUs with GPU defects and selling them as with GPU (a product that requires zero additional engineering) to a television?
Watching this on my 77" A95L that I took delivery of just yesterday. Tested out streaming content, PS5 gaming, and dedicated 4K blu ray player. Hands down the best TV I've ever owned!
Here's a litmus test for you. Try watching the movie Jaws (1975) and do tell us if A95L shows it any better than any other mid to high end TV of 2023.

The Yamaha Aventage A6A has all the HDMI 2.1 features that any new TV has.

Great to hear that Caleb is going to do OLED TV comparison. That should be great. Wish he has a Panasonic TV as well. He did say previously that the built-in apps are not that great as Apple TV box.
I would love to hear in what ways the A95L positively or negatively compares with the X95L, beyond 77" vs. 85".
The only problem for me (woe is me!) is a lack of QD-OLED panels above 77". Keeping my fingers crossed for next year.
True. I have a 77A80 and I'm waiting for QD-OLED to go 83" or bigger and at a somewhat reasonable price too. You can have it all. You just have to be patient!

@@thesoundizerav4956 I’m not seeing any issues with internal apps. Most reports of problems are around DV over HDMI AFAIK
Firmware will for sure be released in november. Thats a software prob.
Ive heard about a beginning of November firmware release, so prob another week or so and this will be a non issue. For the record the last firmware had this issue with hdr10, while the DV was fine, so definitely not a permnanent chipset issue or anything.

@@Caleb_DenisonHey Caleb!
I think the REAL comparison will be the A95L vs QN990C!!!! 🎉
I also bought Panasonic UB820 ultra blue ray player last week with the Sony A95L
I also have the Panasonic
I have the 77 LG G3 and the Panasonic UB820. Beautiful picture, I may have opted for this but I'm very happy gaming and watching movies. I also don't think they're $1000 apart though.
After the G3 has been on for a few minutes, gently rest the back of your hand on the center of the screen and you'll immediately see why that TV is not recommended.
Thanks for the reply’s, much appreciated. Good to know the UB820 is a decent match for the G3 👍
Thanks for the heads up on the G3 regarding temperature, I’ll have a check of it and see what it’s like.
I think for gamers it's really just outputting Dolby Vision at 4k/120hz to be awesome. Which very few TV's can do.

@@hclandscapesIt hasn't uniformity issues it did have Dolby Vision bug Sony fixed
@@hclandscapeswell you’re wrong this time.
More money doesn't always equate to better but in the case if Sony it absolutely does. They do everything better across the board.

Agreed, waiting for an 83/85” version to upgrade from a 9 year old 65” Samsung. Hopefully my Samsung lasts through 2024.
For any A95K owners out there, for blu-ray viewing you must engage DCI colour space and HLG HDR! It is a revelation. Best picture I have ever seen.
please explain how to do this
Seems like it would make an incredible 42" monitor. Shame there will never be a 42".
These sets are not cheap, Sony don't do cheap for a good reason, but the reliability will be
appreciated and you are unlkely to need the 5 year warranty.
Go for 65” Samsung QN800C 😊

All good things comes to those who wait. I bought the 77” and it’s hands down the best TV I’ve ever owned, easily.
@@billtinnell2206 I'm betting the 2024 A95M will have 83"-88" size
@@billtinnell2206I think there’s a size practical limitation though depending on the user
Getting a 98”+ tv up a set of stairs to the 2nd floor theatre room can already be a hindrance to some lol; no big deal if it’s a living room tv of course
I wondered if relegating the eARC to the lower/slower ports would be a good idea with the advent of new AVRs and soundbars.
Real deal!! I’ve had the last years of this tv and it’s always phenomenal, and that is will trying out the G3’s and S95c’s, “it just works”
Woah!!!! This review is even better than I thought it was going to be and I thought it was going to be pretty great!! (Anything but trash!!! Ha ha!)
Also I kind of had to laugh at the look on your face when you mentioned getting mail that you didn’t want people to know what it was, not of COURSE that I have experienced anything like THAT!!
Anyway, here are a couple of quick questions:
1) What size is this TV? 77inch?Sorry have no sense of scale and couldn’t tell.
2) If you still have the A95K, can you possibly use the A95L’s remote with the K to see if it works, particularly the dedicated TH-cam button? Please?😜🥰❣️
I have been wanting to get the 77 inch A95L all along, but after this review I really REALLY want it!!
Going to check out some merch now!🥳
Outstanding review, Caleb, on what looks like THE best TV ever. Cheers, man. And always love outtakes! Benjamin

I think it’s important to comment the size of the TV that you’re reviewing. That additional affirmation would be helpful
This is exactly why I won’t get the A95L. One of the 2.1 ports is the eARC port so with a Sonos Arc connected, you only have one 2.1 input 😕

I want to see the Smart OS’s go head to head (Tizen, Web os and GoogleTV). No one seems to have really compared all of them and how it feels to navigate with them and I think if you’re buying a several thousand dollar tv I want to know how it feels to use it.
RTINGS has compared them
Part of the reason why I don't think you see many TV OS comparisons is because right now at least, there really is no comparison.
Or if your stereo has hdmi 2.1 pass-through it actually expands your hdmi 2.1 ports to as many as your stereo has.
Why on earth would you waste such a great TV by pairing it with a stereo?
I’ve had the 65” with a HT-A9/SW3 (medium sized lounge in a semi detached house, so SW5 would’ve been overkill) over a week now. Phenomenal tv and haven’t experienced any DV issues either via apps or UHD disc. Playing Spider-Man 2 in fidelity mode with VRR 40FPS feels so smooth and doesn’t make me miss 60FPS at all. Have my series x connected to HT-A9 as there’s a port for 4K/120 pass through. I’m also using the TV as a center speaker with the sound system and really enjoy the fact I can control the whole audio system volumes from main remote control via Bravia Sync options that open up in the menus
My only gripe is that the Disney+ app on the tv doesn’t seem to pick up DV content, whereas all the other apps do, except Bravia Core which doesn’t support it. My now older OLED AF9 does pick up Dolby Vision on the Disney app. Hope there’s an update soon
How is the sound with the tv channel?
What type of access do they give to Bravia Core (is it one year free)? What is the picture quality like, it has the highest bitrate advertised for any streaming service, almost blu-ray levels. What is your internet speed, is it below the 115 they recommend?
@@ShwetankYa 24 months free plus ten free credits. Picture quality via pure stream is beautiful especially with the imax enhanced movies. Dolby Atmos support too. My internet is 100MB fibre and streams the movies without issue. I believe if your bandwidth isn’t sufficient the app will make you aware
When you get a TV to review and put it through its paces, how long do you normally get to keep it before you have to send it back?
Hey, you need one of the HDMI 2.1 ports to be eARC so that you can pass through 2.1 contend to it via a 2.1 capable home theater receiver. That allows you to use only 1 cable to the TV and then you can run you XBOX, PS5 and other future 2.1 devices through the AMP.
Or HDMI 2.1 switch
Yeah I agree the eARC does need to be assigned to a 2.1 port.
Thank you Caleb, I will be broke after making this purchase. But it's gonna be worth it. 😅
Totally agree with the eARTC gripe. Basically means sacrificing an HDMI 2.1 spots unless you have a Soundbar with HDMI 2.1 passthrought (but I don't even know if that's a thing).
There are, like LG S95QR. I have one with a 55" LG C3
I would love to see how this tv performs as a centre speaker with the HT-A9.

You must have direct sunlight because ambient light does not do that.
This is my dream tv. 77 in is the size i was waiting for Sony to release. Might replace my A8G soon.
Btw, the "Soundbar" I am using is the brand new Nakamichi 11.4.6, so you would think this combination would be stellar.
I have a A90J thinking about that A95L - is the difference worth the upgrade?
Having my HDMI 2.1 stuff go through an AVR I would strongly dislike if they divorced the eARC from HDMI 2.1 - but if they made it re-assignable between a 2.1 and 2.0 port that would be a ok compromise. Of course the real fix is making all the ports 2.1 😊

Hi Caleb,
Do you feel like the 85X95L has gotten closer to OLED even if it's the basuc midrange options like A80L.
Does it Use AntiReflective Coating ? Or its like Every OLED a Mirror Panel ?
OLED is meant for glossy panels.
Matte panels and coatings are garbage. 🤮🤮🤮 They reduce the picture quality.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M U have that wrong, All pro panels use Antiglare coating , search it . Glossy Panel is used for OLED to boost brightness thats all. What Picture Quality ? What is the point of pure Blacks if u Cant see them and U just see Reflections over it .
All OLED are Known for Garbage Reflections , Even Monitor Alienware is Garbage and trolled because of this . They reflect everything. The only Use for Oled is at Full Dark Environment with no light at all. But its hard to admit when u spend money on it .
Love the call out to classy tech
The price should knock a couple of points off the final review score. The competition is significantly cheaper for damn near the same performance. Diminishing returns should figure into your points scale, otherwise you’ll have gullible people overspending for no reason.
🤣
I don't usually like a TH-camr's merch but this actually looks cool!
Just needs four full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports instead of two and it would be a 10. Hopefully next year.
Saw this tv at best buy and wow it looks amazing in person
Amazing TV, but I’m sad about the HDMI port situation.
