    My only problem with that release is the Middle Earth map. they should include separate print of the map. It's easier to read the book and look at the map at the same time.

    • @brewingbooks

      I agree. I like the fold out maps feature in the deluxe editions, but at the same time I somehow find it quite efficient to have the map printed inside the back cover (except for the spine line running across which ruins it a bit)

    Hey James! New subscriber here. I fell in love with your channel instantly. I have a question. Houghton Mifflin has an identical box set of Tolkien books, also illustrated by Alan Lee but they have different cover art. Do you plan on reviewing them too in the future? I don't understand what the difference between those 2 is, apart from the publisher, and I don't know which one I should get. Thank you and stay well!

    Do you recommend this box set or the 60th anniversary? OR the hard to find hard cover cloth collectors editions?

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Erin. I’ve heard some pretty great things about the 60th anniversary LOTR. Text-wise it should be the same (with updated revisions, etc). As far as I know, that edition contains Alan Lee’s illustrations which are also featured here.
      The benefit of this box set is that you get The Hobbit illustrated too ;) But I think it ultimately depends whether or not you’re looking for a single-volume edition of LOTR (in which case, I’d definitely go for the 60th edition).
      The cloth bound versions, as you say, they’re quite difficult to find. As to the actual content, I’m not exactly sure how they differ from this box set, so I’m afraid I can’t really tell you.
      Hope this helps narrow your choice a little :)

    • @erinjoy8338
      @erinjoy8338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brewingbooks thank you so much for your insight! The more I’ve researched, I actually think I prefer the illustrated versions. They are so gorgeous and the paper seems thicker than the 60th anniversary (that paper seems almost translucent). Plus these also look great without their dust jackets which I prefer to not use, but still have the benefit of the illustrations inside:)

    • @erinjoy8338
      @erinjoy8338 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Warning: it seems like there are lots of bad sellers of this boxed set, and also bad printings. I've read on Reddit that the 5th printing is lower quality. Indeed, I bought this twice on Amazon and sent both back. Both were not only 5th printing, but also appeared to be used and a bit damaged, even though marketed as New. Pretty disappointing. Still trying to find a better seller that can get me a good one.
    I noticed in this video that he seems to have the 1st printing, which apparently was much better. What's up, Harper Collins?
