I built something like this a few years ago out of scrap bits I had laying around. I used 1/4 round for the pins (because that's what I had). It worked great until I went past it's limits and bent one of the pins. I'm getting ready to do another project that needs some round bar bent. You have inspired me to build a new one with beefier materials.
A little tip for those looking to build this, lots of stuff you bend may not need the 30" handle. Make one about 20" and just have a piece of pipe you can slide over the end if needed.
Always a good video. When I made mine, I spread the pins out just a little bit and then made some bushings to go over them to tighten it up when needed.
Just made this tool out of scrap laying around my garage. Welded 1/4" plate together for the flat pieces. For the studs I used 1/2" grade 8 bolts and cut the heads/threaded parts off. So far I've gotten it to bend up to 1/4" thick 1-1/2" wide flat bar with little effort. One modification I did make was welding the studs on both sides since they were becoming misaligned when bending. Doing the extra weld seemed to help prevent bending. I placed my studs 1/2" apart.
That is really awesome! Keep seeing different benders popping up for sale but they are VERY proud of them. Now I can make my own. Thanks Dave and Jess.
Hey Dave, you are the man at helping us diy's making tools and save a ton of cash doing it.Jess is a great help also to help us see that it is possible to make it happen!!😊
What is even more impressive with this is Jess was pulling most of those bends with her hands halfway down the handlebar, meaning she wasn't putting very much torque into the action. Despite the 3/16 bar still bending without too much effort it would've been even easier if she had moved both her hands further away down to the far end of the handlebar.
First time coming across your channel and glad it hit my feed! Glad to have found you both. Excellent instructional video with a couple of really fun folks!! Thank you!!
i need to build something like this, i bent some 1" 3/16 flat bar in the vice with a BFH, for a welding cart project I'm working on. I'm almost done with the build, couple finishing fab touches and then paint. video coming soon on it... great video! i love the information and learning new things from your videos. keep up the great work!
Just discovered your channel. Have been thinking about making one of that style bender for a while. I'll likely be using 5/8"x2-1/2" bar that I've got out back. Which welding table is that? I bought one similar off Amazon recently, and while assembling it was dissapointed to find the screws that hold the top surface on stick up above the top(without any bit of countersinking at all). It's worked fine for the one project I've built with it, but may be an issue with larger projects.
Yes, this project works fine for very small 'products' and very, very thin materials. That weld on the bottom of those pins and including those pins' thickness themselves are ONLY for small materials. If you're looking at bending 3/8" rebar or thicker, this will break and bend those pins on the first attempt. I've made several of these 'benders' and you need deep penetration onto where the pins are being welded - period. Nice project overall for very light material.
I have only used it for exhaust hangers and some other smaller strap and its been working great! I build a press brake on the channel and big stuff goes in that!
@@madgingercustoms Completed mine about an hour ago. Really useful and I had all the items I used to make it laying around the shop. Love your Welder, I recently bought the Harbor Freight Vulcan 220 and love it. Subscribed.
Hey Mad man Dave. So tell me . . . how nice a bead does that new welder lay ;-). Fun & useful project budroe. And it works so well even your daughter can use it eh?
Why use 1/2" mild steel to bend mild steel? Why not a harder material... like stainless or graded bolts, which conveniently also come in 1/2" diameter.
I watched an entire review on it. It's too thin to be a real fab table and they aren't flat. I think you could modify it to be better. Maybe I'll get one when they are available and mod it up.
I love being able to make something out of nothing that I can use. Tks for sharing this with us.
We appreciate you watching!
Thank you Jess and Dave. Another great video for a very useful tool!
Thanks for spending time with us!
As always another great DIY for those of us that piddle along! Thanks to the both of you.
Thanks for watching!! We appreciate it!
Beautiful assistant. Good job on the tool!
😊

I just used this thing yesterday! Still kicking!
Great video and explanation to build one.
No need to spend money when you're having scrap metal / tools, and the right mindset.
Thanks!
More Jess! Love all the content.
She's going to be learning to do some TIG welding soon! Hope you're subscribed!
@@madgingercustoms I was one of your early subscribers! Looking forward to the content.
Thanks for watching us, I hope to do some welding very soon!
Nice tool. More Jess please
She is in lots of videos!!
I love watching all your how to do videos you do a good job man you're awesome love the channel
Thanks so much!
Welder sounds crisp and clean awesome
I really love this thing!
I didn't realize I needed one of these but now I think I do. 🙂
It's fairly handy considering how easy it is to make. Or if you're talking about the red head, yes, everyone needs one of those as well.
@@madgingercustoms 😀
Thank you Dave an Jess. I will build one myself using my New A/C Mig 200. Stay safe.❤😊
Awesome!! Love that machine.

With the bushing on the handle pin and a piece of angle or box on the pivot pin you can get an even tighter bend on thin stuff.
Keep the videos coming guys!
Thanks man!!

I like her sweater better than the bender
Love the sweater. Love it.
😂😂😂😂😂
Just say boobs little bro
That's a super fine piece of equipment!!!
I could watch it bend all day🥰
I also have the arccaptian and love it. Replaced an old transformer machine ,no comparison.
Yeah I've been very happy with Arccaptain products!

This is a very handy tool. You’ve made it very simple to build. Thanks Jess and Dave.👍👍🇨🇦

Hell yeah!! Great work!!
Thanks!!
Jess looks amazing 😍
And she was sick in this video lol.
Thank you! I had such a horrible cold that day but I told him I'd help out ...
Terrific video. Why are the two pins on a diagonal?
I felt it gave room for thicker material but I'm not sure it's really needed.

The welds on the pins penetration is less of an issue if THICK plate is used, as the plate supports the pins.

you're quite a good fabricator.
Thanks! Our new TIG welder came in. I'm going to do more elaborate fab work.

I need one of these to bend rebar
Hey what type of blade is that on your chop saw???

Where did you get that magnetic grounding point?
Amazon. It's a Hobart unit. I think it was only $10!

OK the eyes are up higher guys

I can't help it. I'm just drawn that way! 😂😂
Flat bar has more area so it’s harder to bend.
Yup, makes sense.

Put your safety glasses on Bro. Especially when you are blowing metal shavings.
