      Jay IMO seems to have a better eye for art and a bigger concern for actual directing and style of something. Obi-wan might be one of the worst directed shows I've ever seen. Stuff like the sets and CGI all are solid, the acting is fine, and even the story isn't terrible, but goddamn I've never seen directing sink a show the way it has here. The action scenes are directed as Jay says clunky and awkward. There are some cool moments in this that should end up being a lot more fun but end up looking like a cheap ass fan film because it seems to be shot by an 80 year old with palsy.

      @@megatom5 that Leia chase scene is one of the worst chase scenes I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Like laughably bad, I couldn’t believe that flew by a bunch of exec at a billion dollar company.
      I would disagree on the writing to a certain degree. The writing is pretty bad, but that’s because the show is structured like a feature length movie. Ep 1 feels like Act 1, the last ep feels like Act 3. Everything else in between is filler, legit eps 2-5 are the exact same. Obi goes to planet, he gets chased by inquisitors, he escapes, reva gets bashed for failing. And also it’s just weird this is the story they decided to tell for a obi wan Kenobi show, him helping Leia get home instead of something I don’t, more focused on Obi and Vader and the past you know, not this rescue mission.

    • @wwyd4akb
      @wwyd4akb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@thesexyshark1646 I think the writing is abysmal without regards to structure. Just what occurs and how characters act and react is impossibly stupid, the trenchcoat scene is the epitome of the shite-tower. Every character is 'selectively dumb' when the writers want them to be, Leia is apparently a savant at cold-reading/ employing force powers willy-nilly. A 10 year old does not outrun 3 grown adults in a relatively open forest, let alone three adults prepared for the child and seeking to capture her. Reva's entire character is Kylo 2.0 "she's angry", multiple people survive impaling with a PLASMA SWORD that emits enough heat to melt blast doors.
      Trash writing, with no understanding or appreciation of the lore, that actively makes the characters less capable simply because the writers are not interested in cohesive story, they just want to hit certain beats and move it down the production line.

    I usually disagree with Jay's cynical takes on these kinds of stuff, but this time I am more leaning to his view. Mike and Rich have been permanently brain damaged by the Picard show; like, I get it that they can find amusing how "cheap" the show looks and resolves their stuff, but this is not an actually cheap show, this is a Diseny multimillion dollar production. It's a thing about care and talent rather than a budget constrain.

    • @broco1163
      @broco1163 2 ปีที่แล้ว +128

      Yeah exactly. I feel like the Mike/Rich Trek reviews are full of the "correct" response because they are heavily invested in Trek, and we're watching that crumble in real time. But their investment in Star Wars died a long time ago, and so they're just shrugging. I wish this breakdown was more along the lines of their recent Trek work. They don't even remember enough Star Wars lore to point out the large holes in the Kenobi plot. With Picard, they'd point out things that broke Trek lore in perfect deadpan, but with this, it's just all a big meh. And that's fair, I can't demand that they re-invest to break it down like they do Trek, but I was hoping for a little more of that in this review.

      I always found kind of hypocritical how Mike and Rich get to be massive Star Trek nerds and memorize thousands of episodes yet dismiss any lore or continuity detail from Star Wars. Granted, they are clearly bigger fans of Star Trek and they are not obliged to have the same dedication for Star Wars, but it bugs me how sometimes they have these ideas for how Star Wars could be better not knowing those ideas have been executed a long time ago in better Star Wars media they are not willing to look into. Their need for Obi Wan to gain a consistent and interesting personality was done years ago in TCW, making him a responsible paternal figure with a charmingly sassy attitude, theyveven had him having his own romantic subplot; back in then they didn't need to recycle the Old-Man formula to make something interesting.
      They also keep making fun of Darth Maul yet they do not know how he's practically an entire different character in the animated shows, they even had a Samurai style battle (similar to their requests as for how a lightsaber duel should be) as his final confrontation with Obi Wan, in a moment with a level of tension and dept the Obi Wan show can only dream of.

      @AmericanZergling 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      They're comparing it to two things: Star Trek Picard and the Prequels, two things they have been traumatized by. They acknowledged that the show looks cheap and is genuinely bad, they just didn't care since in their minds they're thinking 'at least it was better than Picard/Prequels.'
      Funny enough, Kenobi made me like Stranger Things again, because the acting, writing, and cinematography of that show's season 4 was a night and day difference compared to D+ shows like Kenobi, Boba Fett, or Moonknight.

    • @Dyljim
      @Dyljim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@AmericanZergling I feel profoundly bad for Deborah Chow, I've said this in a few comment sections but I don't think she was the right person to helm this project, and frankly I get the sense she may have felt that way too.
      This show famously struggled to pin a director, and if you look at Chow's work she's not really had a big hit and her only very notable work was on the Mandalorian- where most of the directors were completely hand held by Filoni (Taika Waititi directed one of the episodes and it literally had NONE of his flair or vision as a director).
      On top of that, there's articles of her saying she didn't have much investment in Star Wars prior to working on the Mandalorian, and for this project had to go to Filoni to get answers to lore questions (who is working on multiple other projects)... so, she clearly didn't have someone super familiar with the lore on her writing staff is the implication I take away from that.
      So with that context, we have a fairly fresh faced director trying to direct one of the most anticipated projects by a fanbase for a canon she's only just starting to truly develop a passion for, so with that I really don't blame her for putting out a rather mediocre show with frustrating elements, I truly believe the cards were stacked against her and with everything considered did a fantastic job at least making a show with sub texts and not a complete trainwreck like Picard.
      Does that mean I like Kenobi? Oh god no, the first 2 episodes made my skin crawl with how painful story elements were like young Leia and the Inquisitors feeling more like Monty Phython skit rather than intimidating villains (I did love how corny the Inquisitor's subtextual analysis of the Jedi archetype in the very first scene, I call it corny due to the acting/dialogue but it's a genuinely excellent bit of writing as it contextualises Obi-Wan's struggle within the episode), and how the Reva was treated like a joke by the other characters -I thought the actress was a great, bold choice to focus it on a new character, I just wish they had given her a more compelling character who was perceived as badass within the show, like Asajj Ventress.

    • @AmericanZergling
      @AmericanZergling 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Dyljim Fair enough with the director. I can believe the idea that she wasn't much of a Star Wars fan but also wasn't going to refuse an opportunity from Disney.
      Focusing on other characters wasn't my problem with Reva, it was that I could predict most of her story from the get-go. She was the youngling from the opening, she was ambitious, would rise to the top to replace the head inquisitor, and would likely be left open for another show of her own. The only twist I liked was that they kept the Inquisitor alive, which I guess I could've predicted if I ever cared to watch Rebels.
      What really bothered me in this show was how they treat the Empire. First, Stormtroopers have somehow become even less threatening than Battledroids. I don't know how or why they did it, but they did. Instead of addressing the joke that Stormtroopers are bad shots or have ineffective armor, Lucasfilm just decided to double down on it.
      Second, when the spy officer said to address her as 'sir' was pretty cringe. Does anyone at Lucasfilm know anybody in the military. Even (especially) an admin could tell you that female officers are called 'ma'am'. They beat this into you at bootcamp and it's annoying whenever Hollywood thinks that somehow calling a woman 'sir' is empowering or something.
      Finally, formations. Formation warfare stopped being effective in the American Civil War. When fighting with automatic weapons the best approach is to utilize smaller, tactical squads and room control. So when Stormtroopers are standing rank in file in a battle scene it just looks retarded.
      That's my rant. Other than that I agree with Jay, the show just looks and feels cheap and bad.

I just assumed he went into hiding near Luke and watched over him for an uneventful couple of decades. Do we also need a story about what Yoda was doing on Dagobar for all that time? Because I assume he just lived eating moss soup and meditating. I honestly don't give a shit about Star Wars but if there is anything interesting to it, it's in going forward and expanding upon the lore, or going way backwards into legends stuff and showing that on the big screen. They are beating the same continuous era of Star Wars into submission and somehow making it all far more mundane in the process.

A stranded person with a broken down speeder, a tuskan assault on a lone traveler, or to close to the Lars' home. Maybe helping Luke as a "chance" meaning he is traveling. The distant but known hermit thing. As for some thing big. If you have to do it, Ben would find a way to make the area around the Lars' home relatively stable between sand peaple, settlers, and criminals. He could be subtle about it. I like how the younglings have helmets on despite the point of them having helmets in RoTS was to blind them and maybe stop them hitting their head while blind and having a floating ball shoot at them. But here they're just doing very mild exercises. Why the giant helmets? Because they had them in that scene so now we have to have them here because that's what younglings wear. (It's probably to make them seem even more child-like and innocent too but they just didn't care that it didn't make sense) Exactly like how the Jedi robes in the prequels were the same as the clothing on Tattooine because that's what Ben wore and so that's what Jedi look like. Or, indeed the blinding helmet and floating blaster ball that was originally just something Obi Wan came up with ad hoc but was by pure coincidence exactly what Jedi training actually was like because that's what Luke did in the original film.
    We've finally got to the point where they're doing it with prequel stuff.
    It's like poetry, it rhymes.
    Or more recently with the Mandalorian where he freezes people in carbonite despite it being a weird, experimental use of a piece of industrial equipment in RoTJ. Maybe word got around and others decided to copy it but it looked like it took a very bulky piece of equipment that took up a whole room in the film. Either way we know it's in there because the writers forgot the original context.

      I like RLM, but IMO they sometimes get a bit too cynical about new stuff. Like, the original movies were great, but at the end of the day, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and others are just popcorn flicks. There can be recurring themes and small character building moments, but none of them are gonna win tons of awards. So when new content isn't the second coming of Christ, you don't need to be mad or upset about it, and you can even enjoy it anyway. Tatooine being a hotbed of action and intrigue in the intervening years just seems wrong. Wrong in the same way as Leia's ship being at the battle in "Rogue One". For Leia to claim that she's on a diplomatic mission when her ship just flew out of a firefight suddenly goes from clever subterfuge to the most ludicrously obvious of lies. And Luke only suddenly recognizing as an adult that he has a part to play in an intergalactic struggle requires that his early years *actually* have been pretty quiet, not that he and everyone around him was oblivious, lying, or both.

      @Danderson-pr4vj My takeaway from that line was that the power of the Force is the power to control the minds of people, which is ultimately far more important for a ruler than blunt instruments of violence. The Death Star can kill as a means to an end, terrorizing the populace into passivity, but that's just a roundabout means of reaching the same goal. The Empire as presented in the original film seemed to have to rely on things like that specifically because it didn't have enough people like Vader using the power of "ancient religions", and that was what he was telling the military off for.

    47:50 about an episode feeling like a con because very little happens: I feel like that is such a staple with long running TV shows. I remember really noticing that for The Walking Dead, especially in the Season 4 and 5 episodes, where it felt like 50 minutes of boring filler and then something big happened in the last 10 minutes to make a wild cliffhanger so that the audience feels like they have to tune in next week to see what happens. Even though it will be another 50 minutes of boring nothing before the interesting finale happens.
    Also Rich was being so incredibly generous with the "streaming a long show is new, the quality will go up in the future." 'Prestige Television' as a concept has been around for decades and people very much know how to make an interesting show that has hour long episodes without ads. Just call a spade a spade and say that thw writers/directors/producers behind this show did a bad job and didn't know what story they wanted to tell or how to tell it well.

      2-the wrong people are in charge at every levels, executives don't watch and are knee deep in corporate administration but still meddle anyways, the leadership at Lucasfilm is on a retcon/moral crusade wich leads to relegating filoni to cartoons and promoting someone who made 2 episodes of mandalorian ( heavily coached by filoni/favreau btw ) on the center stage that obviously never watched sw more than once before getting the job.

      I think it's a default thought process in an age of extremism. It's the same with what they talk about in the end regarding The Last Jedi. I don't think fans hate that Luke is "a loser" in the film, it's that he's transformed into one by taking away his defining traits and having him ramble about laser swords while drinking green milk. A Luke who was crestfallen because his most important padawan (whose name I can't recall, so I'll refer to him as Adam Driver aka Darth Cranky Pants) fell to the dark side is a way of setting up a character arc without going to extremes, and would have appealed to both sides of the fan base.
