They were carp. A shallow water bottom feeding coarse breed related to goldfish. Sports fishermen refer to them as garbage fish. Some hunt them with bows for sport. The Asian community looks at them as cheap protein with little flavor. A waste of life any way you look at it. ✌

I only lived about 4.5 miles from Hoover Dam and California Edison was the one who supplied my electricity which I paid for. At that time that’s the way it was. However, I didn’t take into account about things happen now concerning how power is bought and sold from the power grid between the power companies which happens more than what people realize. A lot has changed since I lived in Henderson before deregulation in the 1990’s and FERC came about!

TY Marc for this informative video about Lake Mead’s receding water level. It is so heartbreaking to see, especially after I worked there as a US Park Ranger in 1986, 1987, 1993 & 1994. I feel so sorry for the Gripentog Family, who I personally know, that lease and operate the Las Vegas Boat Harbor, and Lake Mead Marina along with their employees whose livelyhoods all depend on Lake Mead’s many Visitors and Boaters who frequent the lake. The city of Las Vegas needs to start recycling their water like Tucson does, and put it back into the lake. Tucson was one of the first cities to recycle their water where it was put back into the Santa Cruz River that was once almost dry. Tucson’s recycling method has been a model of what cities in the desert Southwest should do to help curb their water shortage.

Las Vegas does recycle their water. The water flows to Lake Mead after treatment via the Las Vegas Wash which feeds Lake Las Vegas and the onward to Lake Mead. Lake Mead would be much fuller if SoCal and Phoenix area did not siphon off so much.

When I first lived in Henderson, they were just started to build the Lake Vegas Community and golf course. I remember that People couldn’t water their lawns very much, but the golf courses were exempt from those water use rules back then. That goes back to money. I should have been more specific about LV recycling. I’m not sure about how much water LV recycles now with their water situation, but Tucson recycles nearly all of theirs with additional filtering and cleaning other than just ordinary waste water treatment. When I was living there in Tucson, working at Saguaro National Park, they had some of the most stringent water use rules of any city that I have ever lived in. You forget to mention the Colorado River treaty where the US has to release so much water out of the Colorado to Mexico. That certainly makes a difference in the lake level too. You may not be aware of it but Phoenix gets a lot of their water from the Salt River Project; SRP, and the Central Arizona Project, or CAP. Southern California should have built Desalination Plants up and down their coastline years ago since there is an over abundance of sea water which is plentiful, but they didn’t. Their foolish state regulations and laws have also ruined their state too. Their state air quality rules prohibit prescribed burning so you have more uncontrollable wildfires each year too. Many of these big cities need to get back to using a common sense approach about their water use and resupply during these times of drought. It is astounding, yet so disheartening to me, about just how much Lake Mead’s water level has receded since I last worked and lived out there in 1994. 😮

As a former US Park Ranger who worked there at Lake Mead NRA in 1986, 1987, 1993 & 1994, that would be the NPS’s responsibility to clean up most of that shoreline pollution. The BOR’s responsibility only encompasses around Hoover Dam! I feel so sorry for Gary Gripentog, and his family who have been leasing and operating many of the Marinas there since the 1950’s. They started out operating Las Vegas Boat Harbor. Then they bought Lake Mead Marina at Boulder Beach in 2017 from Seven Crown Resorts. I use to have a Membership with Seven Crown Resorts when I first started working down at Catherine’s Ranger Station in 1986. I met the Gripentog Family in 1987 when I worked at Las Vegas Wash Ranger Station. It is heartbreaking to see Lake Mead’s water level recede so much in such a short time. Las Vegas needs to recycle their water back into the lake like Tucson does with the Santa Clara river.

So I wonder how much time is left before people who own these boats can't retrieve the boat because the launch point is completely unusable. If I had an expensive boat on Meade, I would probably be thinking about getting my boat off the lake before that's not possible. I saw how the other launch ramps were too shallow and muddy and could no longer be used. Is that going to be the case with the remaining boat ramp? Just wondering...
We took ours out at the end of 2019 and had a hard time and it's nowhere the size of most the houseboats out there. They do have a plan to move the marina and the boat harbor sideways then back
Very simple. Some yahoo had that microwave on his boat and it stopped working. He probably stupidly threw it overboard and it sunk. Now the water is gone and it doesn't look like it belongs there but ...
I have heard they are holding back a massive amount of water at Lake Powell to get it at the level needed to produce electricity through the dam and it needs to be maintained at a certain level. This is why lake Mead is dropping so quickly at the moment.

Lake Powell is low now also. Very little power is being generated at any of the dams affected by drought. Even ones in California. Worse drought in 1200 years.in the west. And now so many people depend on the water from these rivers? A lot of pain ahead for all Americans.
@@derrickforeal This is a good warning to look ahead, and take note of where your water comes from. What will happen, is as the water in the desert states dries up, people will move. They'll go to states where the lawns are green, and there are few restrictions. Then those water sources will get strained. No one wants to hear it, but climate change is here, and we should all get used to conserving water.
Wrong! I was at Lake Powel last week and it’s more empty than Mead. Lake Mead is more important so they’re actually sacrificing Powel to keep Hoover dam operating.

Thank you for the updates! It is so detailed! I am praying for everything that’s going on with the disappearing Lake Mead. I don’t think a lot of people out their comprehend the depth of all of this! I visited my cousin in Henderson a couple years ago, and mentioned all the new housing builds with a lake that can’t support the growth! While global warming may play a part in it, you cannot discount that fact that the more people sipping from the straw, the faster the depletion of the water! I have a background in environmental science, and over 25 years ago we covered the depletion of water from the Colorado River which feeds Lake Powell, which feeds Lake Mead. So very sad to see the devastation! Again my thoughts and prayers for everyone their. Such beautiful scenery. Certainly Gods gift to all of us.

For a deep dive into the history of dams and water projects in the west I highly recommend reading Cadillac Desert. Much of what is happening was predicted years ago.
Not really a valid argument since the water source for it comes from the rockies and is impounded here artificially. The fact that it's down shows widespread drought even outside of the desert southwest.

I live in the deep south, Mississippi, to be exact and for the last week, we've been under a heat advisary from 10am to 6pm everyday. Our temps have been 103°-106°, with heat index's of 109°-112°. I stay indoors unless going to doctors and get groceries. Other than that, I'm hybernating! Can't handle the heat, it takes my breath away when I step outside. our temps as of lately have been well over 100°!!!

I hope that there will be a miracle cloud burst that would fill this lake back up. What is going to happen to everyone that depends on the water source and the power-up at Hoover? Sign of the times.
This comment shows how LITTLE you understand. A "miracle cloudburst" will not fill this lake back up. It would need steady rain - directly over the lake - for several months in order to get the lake back to anything close to normal. And you can forget about run-off from the surrounding area. The ground is so dry that most of the rainfall will evaporate before it has a chance to trickle back down to the shore. Try to think LOGICALLY instead of some idiotic dream from an eight-year-old child's mind........
I live in big Bear in the summer, I hike every day in a pond that’s now dry. It’s been dry for years now. They used to be called Baker’s pond and it had a lot of water in it. It’s just at the end of my street.

Told these logging companies 30 years ago this was going to happen if the kept clear cutting these forrests . Now drive up i-5 the mountains are bald and your lakes are drying up . Guess they showed me . Money is more importain then life .
You would think that due to the circumstances they would want to try and put something in place to capture and save the fish and place them in a new lake to keep the fish cycle going.
Sad for the people who live in the area, but water in the desert with high demand from increased populations and buisness/farming can be held responsible for its' demise. 22 years ago Lake Mead was at its highest level and the past 100 years were considered a "wet period" during the past 1200 years. Its a sand pit in a very hot environment, water is not common in desert areas, vegetable farms of continuous irrigation is not natural, millions of people moving to the area, green golf courses ect. Mother Nature did not intend on the desert to be a lush oasis.
I mostly agree with you and used to live in Henderson. The water you see mostly in Vegas and Casinos is all recycled waste water and not fresh drinking water. I was given concessions by not having green grass at home but more cactus and natural. Plus each state along the Colorado is fighting for the water. Arizona had/has massive farming in the desert. The damn cannot make all of Las Vegas and Henderson electricity but it did make a lot of it without burning fossil fuel. I miss it.
@@darylkik6204 yes, the largest consumers are the farming operations in the desert, like the almond farms ect over 40% goes to them. Not to mention they sale water to parts of Northern Mexico.
@@terrybrown2556 I wonder if we can do they have in parts of the middle east. I know the cost is the killer but De-salination buildings can purify salt water and as a bonus you get free salt. The water is so low that the intake pipes by the Dam stopped taking in water a while back and then had to install basically a bathtub drain to get at more water. I believe its around 1000 feet?(that cannot be right.) and if the lake drops below 500 the turbines cannot function. (Something like that) Still in agreement with you for the most part.
Yes, I think the de-salination plants will probably be the future for that region. However better technology with those types of water plants needs to occur. I think Israel was the first to be successful with it, but the process has issues with the equipment becoming scaled up so its not a silver bullet. But I have trust in the technologies being engineered that this will become more efficent with less trouble. Best wishes
@@darylkik6204 Also, the environmentalists in California have stopped several efforts to build desalination plants with the excuse that the process would destroy the Pacific coastal ecosystems. So until they run out of water and desperate, I don't think they will see the urgency.
I remember feeding those fish at the marina about 35 years ago...what a sad difference! Those bones looked like spare ribs to me. Talk about Jimmy Hoffa, the Sincity guys found a barrel that is full of cement, of course to weigh it down in Lake Mead. Now THAT barrel should be hauled up and out and cracked open. I imagine people realise that due to the shape of a lake, as the level goes down that less water covers less area. So for example a million gallons from a full lake would barely drop the level, but a million gallons from a lake that low will drop the level a lot. It drops faster and faster every day ... the days of the lake remaining are reducing very rapidly. Is someone going to shut off the suction from the lake and switch to an alternative source because it'll happen all by itself very soon indeed ... then what ? Shut off the pipeline today and it will still take years to refill.
Zebra mussels. They flourished in the Great Lakes for a while but now have run out of phytoplankton to eat and have died off. They leave the water spotless but devour the food source of many other little creatures
That boat was once somebodies pride and joy. Today it's just one of many examples of how fleeting "things" can be, except for a good burger!! The older I get the more I enjoy good food. You are right about the lake, it's looking almost apocalyptic out there.
I used to live in Vegas when Lake mead was full! My wife and I bailed out of there 7 years ago...and glad we did. Vegas has sealed its own fate with the insane amount of over building, and now it's paying the price. Even if there WAS a way to replenish the lake, it would take years to have an impact, but there isn't. I predict Vegas is going to shrivel up and die some day, so glad I got out of there.
Vegas is not the problem why do people not understand that a good portion of LakeMeade water is sent to California and should never have been allowed to happen.

There's too much crazy stuff going on out that way where everybody is taking the water like what happened in Beaver Dam nature preserve and what is going on in Arizona where a humongous plot of land is rented to some rich Saudi Arabian that is using 10 times a normal water need for alfalfa

I only lived about 4.5 miles from Hoover Dam and California Edison was the one who supplied my electricity which I paid for. At that time that’s the way it was. However, I didn’t take into account about things happen now concerning how power is bought and sold from the power grid between the power companies which happens more than what people realize. A lot has changed since I lived in Henderson before deregulation in the 1990’s and FERC came about!

TY Marc for this informative video about Lake Mead’s receding water level. It is so heartbreaking to see, especially after I worked there as a US Park Ranger in 1986, 1987, 1993 & 1994. I feel so sorry for the Gripentog Family, who I personally know, that lease and operate the Las Vegas Boat Harbor, and Lake Mead Marina along with their employees whose livelyhoods all depend on Lake Mead’s many Visitors and Boaters who frequent the lake. The city of Las Vegas needs to start recycling their water like Tucson does, and put it back into the lake. Tucson was one of the first cities to recycle their water where it was put back into the Santa Cruz River that was once almost dry. Tucson’s recycling method has been a model of what cities in the desert Southwest should do to help curb their water shortage.

Las Vegas does recycle their water. The water flows to Lake Mead after treatment via the Las Vegas Wash which feeds Lake Las Vegas and the onward to Lake Mead. Lake Mead would be much fuller if SoCal and Phoenix area did not siphon off so much.
@@martinneumann9345 That’s true Mark. I had almost forgotten about the Lake Vegas community and golf course. When I first lived in Henderson, they were just started to build the Lake Vegas Community and golf course. I remember that People couldn’t water their lawns very much, but the golf courses were exempt from those water use rules back then. That goes back to money. I should have been more specific about LV recycling. I’m not sure about how much water LV recycles now with their water situation, but Tucson recycles nearly all of theirs with additional filtering and cleaning other than just ordinary waste water treatment. When I was living there in Tucson, working at Saguaro National Park, they had some of the most stringent water use rules of any city that I have ever lived in. You forget to mention the Colorado River treaty where the US has to release so much water out of the Colorado to Mexico. That certainly makes a difference in the lake level too. You may not be aware of it but Phoenix gets a lot of their water from the Salt River Project; SRP, and the Central Arizona Project, or CAP. Southern California should have built Desalination Plants up and down their coastline years ago since there is an over abundance of sea water which is plentiful, but they didn’t. Their foolish state regulations and laws have also ruined their state too. Their state air quality rules prohibit prescribed burning so you have more uncontrollable wildfires each year too. Many of these big cities need to get back to using a common sense approach about their water use and resupply during these times of drought. It is astounding, yet so disheartening to me, about just how much Lake Mead’s water level has receded since I last worked and lived out there in 1994. 😮

Lake Mead has dropped over the last 20 plus years from 1229 feet to less than 1050 or at 25% capacity, which is considered too low to supply enough water or create hydro power. The economic impact to the immediate Lake Mead area is a microcosm of its future affect to America as a whole. What you may not heard of, is the US Senate Energy Committee on June 14th took up the impact of the western drought, and their testimony in the first few minutes indicates it is the worst western American drought in 1200 years. Remember the depression was made worse by the dustbowl of the 1930’s. The committee had experts testify on the causes of the current drought, what it will mean, and what can be done to rectify the shortage of water. In my state not affected by water shortages, we are a little luckier, and I have urged our politicians to understand these water shortages will affect the country in very negative ways unless addressed, and even then, there is going to be a lot of pain. The O’Toole testimony at the hearing and it’s transcript outlines what will happen and also offers some solutions, but those take time and commitment. So mind set changes and teamwork from every American is needed. Also a lot of prayers for our country.

I find it a little crazy this pollution isn’t being carted away by the dam authority .
As a former US Park Ranger who worked there at Lake Mead NRA in 1986, 1987, 1993 & 1994, that would be the NPS’s responsibility to clean up most of that shoreline pollution. The BOR’s responsibility only encompasses around Hoover Dam! I feel so sorry for Gary Gripentog, and his family who have been leasing and operating many of the Marinas there since the 1950’s. They started out operating Las Vegas Boat Harbor. Then they bought Lake Mead Marina at Boulder Beach in 2017 from Seven Crown Resorts. I use to have a Membership with Seven Crown Resorts when I first started working down at Catherine’s Ranger Station in 1986. I met the Gripentog Family in 1987 when I worked at Las Vegas Wash Ranger Station. It is heartbreaking to see Lake Mead’s water level recede so much in such a short time. Las Vegas needs to recycle their water back into the lake like Tucson does with the Santa Clara river.

So I wonder how much time is left before people who own these boats can't retrieve the boat because the launch point is completely unusable. If I had an expensive boat on Meade, I would probably be thinking about getting my boat off the lake before that's not possible. I saw how the other launch ramps were too shallow and muddy and could no longer be used. Is that going to be the case with the remaining boat ramp? Just wondering...
Just this year, lol. But hey I'm sure a few owners are just waiting 9n an insurance check. Some don't have another lake to take it to.
For the bigger boats its already too late. the remaining ramp open is too shallow. Even the small boats are having trouble.

We took ours out at the end of 2019 and had a hard time and it's nowhere the size of most the houseboats out there. They do have a plan to move the marina and the boat harbor sideways then back

I have heard they are holding back a massive amount of water at Lake Powell to get it at the level needed to produce electricity through the dam and it needs to be maintained at a certain level. This is why lake Mead is dropping so quickly at the moment.
Kinda fishy that he didn't have a single drop to say about Lake Powell, or the cause of the drought.

Lake Powell is low now also. Very little power is being generated at any of the dams affected by drought. Even ones in California. Worse drought in 1200 years.in the west. And now so many people depend on the water from these rivers? A lot of pain ahead for all Americans.

@@derrickforeal This is a good warning to look ahead, and take note of where your water comes from. What will happen, is as the water in the desert states dries up, people will move. They'll go to states where the lawns are green, and there are few restrictions. Then those water sources will get strained. No one wants to hear it, but climate change is here, and we should all get used to conserving water.
Wrong! I was at Lake Powel last week and it’s more empty than Mead. Lake Mead is more important so they’re actually sacrificing Powel to keep Hoover dam operating.

Thank you for the updates! It is so detailed! I am praying for everything that’s going on with the disappearing Lake Mead. I don’t think a lot of people out their comprehend the depth of all of this! I visited my cousin in Henderson a couple years ago, and mentioned all the new housing builds with a lake that can’t support the growth! While global warming may play a part in it, you cannot discount that fact that the more people sipping from the straw, the faster the depletion of the water! I have a background in environmental science, and over 25 years ago we covered the depletion of water from the Colorado River which feeds Lake Powell, which feeds Lake Mead. So very sad to see the devastation! Again my thoughts and prayers for everyone their. Such beautiful scenery. Certainly Gods gift to all of us.

I live in the deep south, Mississippi, to be exact and for the last week, we've been under a heat advisary from 10am to 6pm everyday. Our temps have been 103°-106°, with heat index's of 109°-112°. I stay indoors unless going to doctors and get groceries. Other than that, I'm hybernating! Can't handle the heat, it takes my breath away when I step outside. our temps as of lately have been well over 100°!!!

I hope that there will be a miracle cloud burst that would fill this lake back up. What is going to happen to everyone that depends on the water source and the power-up at Hoover? Sign of the times.
This comment shows how LITTLE you understand. A "miracle cloudburst" will not fill this lake back up. It would need steady rain - directly over the lake - for several months
in order to get the lake back to anything close to normal. And you can forget about run-off from the surrounding area. The ground is so dry that most of the rainfall will
evaporate before it has a chance to trickle back down to the shore. Try to think LOGICALLY instead of some idiotic dream from an eight-year-old child's mind........
I live in big Bear in the summer, I hike every day in a pond that’s now dry. It’s been dry for years now. They used to be called Baker’s pond and it had a lot of water in it. It’s just at the end of my street.
I'm curious to know why the park people or whoever is in charge doesn't start cleaning up all the stuff that is laying around now due to the water being gone..including all the boats laying around 🤔

Sad I lived down there for almost 20 years back in the late 70's and early 80's and boy what a change in the lake. I don't know how it won't dry up.
Told these logging companies 30 years ago this was going to happen if the kept clear cutting these forrests . Now drive up i-5 the mountains are bald and your lakes are drying up . Guess they showed me . Money is more importain then life .
They are chopping more and more forests to make solar panels which after about 20 years, will end up as toxic waste in a landfill.

You would think that due to the circumstances they would want to try and put something in place to capture and save the fish and place them in a new lake to keep the fish cycle going.
Sad for the people who live in the area, but water in the desert with high demand from increased populations and buisness/farming can be held responsible for its' demise. 22 years ago Lake Mead was at its highest level and the past 100 years were considered a "wet period" during the past 1200 years. Its a sand pit in a very hot environment, water is not common in desert areas, vegetable farms of continuous irrigation is not natural, millions of people moving to the area, green golf courses ect. Mother Nature did not intend on the desert to be a lush oasis.
I mostly agree with you and used to live in Henderson. The water you see mostly in Vegas and Casinos is all recycled waste water and not fresh drinking water. I was given concessions by not having green grass at home but more cactus and natural. Plus each state along the Colorado is fighting for the water. Arizona had/has massive farming in the desert. The damn cannot make all of Las Vegas and Henderson electricity but it did make a lot of it without burning fossil fuel. I miss it.
@@darylkik6204 yes, the largest consumers are the farming operations in the desert, like the almond farms ect over 40% goes to them. Not to mention they sale water to parts of Northern Mexico.
@@terrybrown2556 I wonder if we can do they have in parts of the middle east. I know the cost is the killer but De-salination buildings can purify salt water and as a bonus you get free salt. The water is so low that the intake pipes by the Dam stopped taking in water a while back and then had to install basically a bathtub drain to get at more water. I believe its around 1000 feet?(that cannot be right.) and if the lake drops below 500 the turbines cannot function. (Something like that) Still in agreement with you for the most part.
Yes, I think the de-salination plants will probably be the future for that region. However better technology with those types of water plants needs to occur. I think Israel was the first to be successful with it, but the process has issues with the equipment becoming scaled up so its not a silver bullet. But I have trust in the technologies being engineered that this will become more efficent with less trouble. Best wishes
@@darylkik6204 Also, the environmentalists in California have stopped several efforts to build desalination plants with the excuse that the process would destroy the Pacific coastal ecosystems. So until they run out of water and desperate, I don't think they will see the urgency.
I remember feeding those fish at the marina about 35 years ago...what a sad difference! Those bones looked like spare ribs to me. Talk about Jimmy Hoffa, the Sincity guys found a barrel that is full of cement, of course to weigh it down in Lake Mead. Now THAT barrel should be hauled up and out and cracked open. The comparison with the hill clearly showing the water level from the 80s really puts this matter into perspective.
I imagine people realise that due to the shape of a lake, as the level goes down that less water covers less area. So for example a million gallons from a full lake would barely drop the level, but a million gallons from a lake that low will drop the level a lot. It drops faster and faster every day ... the days of the lake remaining are reducing very rapidly. Is someone going to shut off the suction from the lake and switch to an alternative source because it'll happen all by itself very soon indeed ... then what ? Shut off the pipeline today and it will still take years to refill.
We must make a day to PRAY

Zebra mussels. They flourished in the Great Lakes for a while but now have run out of phytoplankton to eat and have died off. They leave the water spotless but devour the food source of many other little creatures
That boat was once somebodies pride and joy. Today it's just one of many examples of how fleeting "things" can be, except for a good burger!! The older I get the more I enjoy good food. You are right about the lake, it's looking almost apocalyptic out there.
I used to live in Vegas when Lake mead was full! My wife and I bailed out of there 7 years ago...and glad we did. Vegas has sealed its own fate with the insane amount of over building, and now it's paying the price. Even if there WAS a way to replenish the lake, it would take years to have an impact, but there isn't. I predict Vegas is going to shrivel up and die some day, so glad I got out of there.
Vegas is not the problem why do people not understand that a good portion of LakeMeade water is sent to California and should never have been allowed to happen.
@@scotthewitt4927 while true that Vegas uses a very small portion of Lake Mead, it is indicative of the larger problem. The southwest in general is not designed to hold 20 million plus people.

There's too much crazy stuff going on out that way where everybody is taking the water like what happened in Beaver Dam nature preserve and what is going on in Arizona where a humongous plot of land is rented to some rich Saudi Arabian that is using 10 times a normal water need for alfalfa
