I'm not one to excuse child abuse, but I think the reason why this works as comedy is due to the slapstick and why it's happening. Slapstick is at its funniest when it's deserved. Papa Bear's misery is entirely because of his short temper and lack of patience. Most of the slapstick is the result of his actions blowing up in his face. So each time he hits Junior, he cements how we're not supposed to feel sympathy for him. We're meant to laugh at his constant karma. In addition, because this is a cartoon and not real life, any of Junior's abuse never lasts longer than till the next cut, so we're not watching a baby bear in constant misery, we're watching the father's comedic misery
That's exactly why "A Bear for Punishment" is my favorite three bears cartoon, since the whole thing is just Papa Bear getting exactly what he deserves after everything he's put his family through, and there's pretty much nothing he can do about it. Plus, Junyer gets abused the least in that short out of all of the Three Bears shorts from the Looney Tunes classic era.
It also helps that Junior is significantly bigger in size than Papa Bear; if the size difference were to be inverted it would come across as more disturbing than funny, and I think it would have come across like that even back then.
Comparing Yosemite Sam to Henry is like comparing a grenade to a nuclear warhead. Sam doesn't live with emotional dethatched wife and an idiot son every day.

While it's disappointing the TV censors did Papa Bear (or Henry) dirty for Tiny Toons, I'm surprised Mama Bear gets a fair share in it.
It’s at least good to see Mama do *something* other than be a typical bystander parent like she usually is.
@@capncookie1110 4:32: I do like the scene from “Bee-Deviled Bruin”, where Junior stuffs the Honeypot with Bees, and Henry gives the Sandwich full of Bees to Junior, who eats it, and makes buzzing noises, much to Henry’s annoyance that he punched his son’s mouth.
LoL that based on fairly tales book.
They should have let him keep hitting junior crazy ass lol
"Henry?"
1:59 Ok that part HAD to be an adult joke, bro kicked him up his hole!!!!
It's not.
Papa Bear is Downright Vicious!!!!!! Abusive towards the son and his wife he should've been arrested and booked
erica say it in only one exclamation mark, not six! Edit it!
And he’s also ungrateful as well
They’re the ones who are the thorn in his side.
I understand that he’s pissed off but what a waste of good honey 3:25 😂
This is really just a Don’t laugh or you go to hell challenge
My older sister and I used to live in this kind of family; glad I didn’t anymore
Sorry😢
@@troyteasley9889 it’s okay
@yourlocalFrostingfan that’s not happening, he ran off somewhere after he attempted to shoot my older sister (my mom blocked the bullet; she survived)
@@VixenSTRIKEfront Okay, now *that’s* irredeemable. At least he’s now out of your life for good.
@@capncookie1110 yeah, living with my stepdad from now on
I love these old cartoons! Thank you!
No problem, I loved these guys too and was happy to see them return last year
Don't forget that he also tells his wife to shut up, Screams in Mel Blanc's Voice, and Has even attempted to hit his wife
Jones knew what he was doing during the concept-stages.
Had Papa Bear and Junior swapped sizes, their interactions wouldn't be funny at all.
11:45 Papa Bear: What did I ever do to deserve such a family?!
Definitely my favorite quote from henry bear
I’ll name a list.
2:32 Oh, Junior, you just armed him with something to hit you.
Yeah junior bear don't worry everything is an accident.
In the 1991 episode Mama bear stood for her son
From henry bear
As she should
11:40 this is the point where he regrets his life choices he’s done.. and regrets all of the abuse he’s done.
Nevermind, He goes back to being abusive in the next scene.
1:25 I know it’s mean but I can’t help ROWL at this!
Papa bear has some serious IED
9:35 Give me back my sandwich!
9:35, 9:36 Papa Bear (Henry) sounds like Big Time Beagle and Slick Wolf.
Frank Welker did his voice in Tiny Toons.
0:36 That’s the burping sound used in Pink Panther The Pink Flea.
4:00 He said he boost himself up, not to throw himself up
He even abused mother bear
Even when it rains outside, Junior will still face papa bear's wrath.
Because Junior has the mentality of the character of Lenny in the Steinbeck novel “OF MICE AND MEN”.
I’m sure he’ll face Papa’s wrath in any kind of weather
7:41 You gotta admit, this is funny! The way Junyer handled those alarm clocks like a boss!
Henry’s Mum and Dad: DON’T BE HORRID HENRY BEAR!!
Papa Bear frustrated that his son is a nincompoop.
And the fact he’s big and not potty trained
1:13 , when you lose the video game on last live. LOL 😂
Pa's a gentleman no matter how pissed off he gets at junior he never hits his wife.
I mean it's a near miss on mama bear but a critical hit on junior
Yeah, but Junior can take it like a soldier, especially Pa throws those haymakers.
I once had a boss like Junior he was big and just as stupid.
He does *attempt* to hit her on a few occasions though, but never actually makes contact. So, I definitely wouldn’t say he’s a gentleman, as he does have malicious intent towards her too.
the original grumpy bear
Yeah I remember as a kid I always hated Papa Bear, it’s not Junior Bear’s fault his father chose to create him with his mom.
Mama to Bugs: "Ooohhhhh Hmmmhmhmhmhmhmhmhm... Tell me more about my eyes.'
One of a few times in a Chuck Jones short that Bugs lost.
"SHUT UP, JUNIOR! CAN'T YA SEE I'M TRYING TO THINK?!" You can't help but laugh at the simple absurdity of this stuff.
1:53 Minecraft
5:09 he only hit him because the bees didn’t sting him
1:13 - 1:14 My favorite one right here.
