    - Highlights (places of note)
and what I like to call
    - Bumcheeks (the not so good stuff)
Welcome to the third episode where we talk about the nitty gritty of Van Life in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is somewhere I actually visit every year, but this time we got to see so much more of what the Netherlands really has to offer!

Hi, I'm Mel. I'm a Northern Irish eejit who spends a lot of time travelling around in a self-converted van (a 2003 Ford Transit to be exact). I'm also a musician, hence a wee song goes up here from time to time. I LOVE to be creative, am far too addicted to games (Holla if you sank too many hours into Stardew Valley too!), have the best Chihuahua in the world named Pebbles, and I generally just like to have a bit of banter and a good time! Sleeping in a camper in the Netherlands is technically illegal (by ways of a local bylaw called the APV (Algemene Plaatselijke Verordening = General Loacal Ordinance)
There used to be w law which regulates touristic activities outside campgrounds and such but that law has been revoked. What remains to regulate things like sleeping in a camper at
if the parkingspace a random parking lot is the APV which is a municipality level law. So far so good but these laws are very low level in the pecking order of laws in the Netherlands. In fact they are about as low level as they get.
But you can ignore these laws because of two simple to understand things:
    1. Since the APV is a low level law it is superseded by just about any piece of legislation which s recognized by the Dutch judicial system. The main thing to know here is that there is a treaty between the Netherlands and the EU called the EVRM (European Treaty for Human Rights) in which is stated that every citizen which is legally in the EU (and Northern Irish are as yet legal in the EU) is allowed to choose ones dwelling place and no government body can restrict this choice unless a handful of things are violated like: being a nuisance, a waste dumper, selling your girlfriend or boyfriend for sex and that kind of thing. Since an international treaty supersedes any national or local law in case they are in conflict, so the treaty goes in this case. 2. A camper van is considered a dwelling (just like a house is) and as such the treaty goes for camper vans as well. To illustrate this: police is not allowed to search the living part of your van without your permission or a search warrant (which they have a hard time getting because the need some kind of proof they will find proof - which is virtually impossible unless you leave suspect items in plain view - always a good idea to close the curtains of the living space if you are driving just for this reason)
So IF you get a ticket for sleeping in your camper van ALWAYS challenge it and you will find the ticket is revoked simply because the local governments (municipalities) realize there is a very large chance they loose the legal battle which creates a precedent which can cause all sorts of other problems for them. So they will dismiss the ticket rather then drag you into court over it. Bottom line you will either sleep sound undisturbed (85%), you will get woken up by police and send on your way (14%) or get woken up by police, get a ticket (1% - which you challenge in court and most likely win using the above argument) and send along...
Long story short: It is illegal to sleep in your camper in the Netherlands but in practice the government is very limited in enforcing that what they think is an actual law (which it isn't)
If the parking space you are at does not have signs specifically banning overnight parking or bans campers you should be fine. If you can use parking lots outside the city limits or even at trail heads in the forests (hard to find though if you are compelled to park near or at places like amsterdam and such)
Park for night in the Netherlands is unreliable mainly in large cities. But any spot which is out of the way like forest trailhead parking spots and parking lots near cemeteries, churches, restaurants and industrial estates are fine. A good alternative too are the lots of supermarkets and of a large automotive shop facility. Many vans, cars and campers even are parked there to be serviced the next day. Also larger camping stores or camper dealerships are good places to park for the night provided you are able to leave early enough...

The prices in every Albert Heijn are the same. You are talking about the Albert Heijn to go, it's only located in train stations. There are quite some Lidl shops, when there is no Lidle, you will find Aldi or Dirk/ Deen, they are cheap too. Albert Heijn is the most expensive supermarket around, even with only euroshopper you pay around €40 more a month each person. Also the free boat is a ferry xD and sleeping in Amsterdam in your car is illegal. Every morning police goes around checking foreign cars and write out fines, so I would recommend staying at the outside of Amsterdam.

Hi! As a real AH lover. There is a difference between AH and AH to GO. The name says it all. But the to go shops pay a lot more for rent and the products are different. Just look for a Normal AH. Or when you are extremely thirsty/hangry then the To GO

if you ever come back to the netherlands, feel free to send me a message and i can share some gorgeous lesser known spots + tips!
for example, i live on a former island called urk (it's now connected to the mainland) and it's a gorgeous place with 2 beaches(showers on the beach), a harbour, lighthouse and the old part of town still feels very authentic.
there are camper spots by the harbour, but i would also know some spots where you definitely go unnoticed with a regular looking van (+most people here really don't care if you camp out somewhere. i've been sleeping in my van on a parking lot close to the beach).
there are other really nice towns and villages like urk :)
like; volendam, giethoorn, zwolle, groningen, leeuwarden.. and if you go more east(towards apeldoorn or arnhem) the landscape changes beautifully. the province zeeland is also great, especially in summer! as it's by the ocean.

Nice! We are actually from Amsterdam, traveling through Europe atm in our van. We are planning to also travel in the Netherlands for a bit. Just because mostly people have seen other countries more than their own ;) Was wondering how you did it with sleeping in the van in wild-places. Did you ever had any problems? Or you have any recommendations?

well, i mean... 'yes' there is more nature outside the randstaad cities, but this is still the Netherlands we're talking about. the only countries you'll find less nature in are places like Singapore, simple because it's a city state. the Netherlands has really quite rubbish countryside compared to most other places in the world.
