I have owned two of these dozers. Other than the noise coming from the Detroit, they are very productive and well balanced machines.They are roughly the size of the D8-H/K. The left side foot pedal tilts the blade and the transmission selector engages the starter. The biggest down fall in my experience would be the track frames. Both of mine had turnable fan blades for summer and winter. Almost forgot how bad the blades cracked on these. Two full days of welding annually.
There's actually a driveshaft that runs from the engine along the frame and up to the radiator to operate the cooling fan. Interesting design for sure. I've operated a 1971 82-40 (Non DA model) with the 8V71N. Awesome machines. Tons of power and the controls are very simple.
Well someone kept it running long enough to have to weld some grouser stock onto the old pads. That's a good sign. I wonder if this machine still works any. It looks as if you could fire it up and move some dirt with it. Thanks for posting this rare machine.
Great machine, doesn't look anywhere near 40 years old, and from looking at that renovated track it must be still paying its way. Great view from the operators seat and the controls look very well laid out for its time too.
Good presentation and you're well equipped with facts. But you did forget to mention the cooling fan as BC Logger did below. That was one point that did NOT allow operators to get warm in cold operating conditions. Unless, they skirted along the sides of the body with tarpaulins ( after reversing the direction of the fan blades to try to keep some of the heated air in and around the operator.) Other than this, these 82- series Dozers were a great machine that GM screwed up by dis-continuing. ( This is only my opinion of course, I could be wrong ) But I liked these units.
I ran one of those about 17 years ago. They were pushing old Dozers. Slow but they wasnt built for SPEED...This machine is just one of many Why I cant HEAR TODAY....LOL....When you ran this Dozer at the end of the Day You was WHIPPED....The one I operated had a winch on it. And One of the Dump truck drivers Didnt fallow directions and got hung up. HE Hooked the cable to the front end of his truck. And When I eased ahead It pulled the front left spring hanger right out of the frame of the truck.....LOL...Needless to say the truck Driver wasnt very smart...Too lazy to get his pull hook out of cab and hook to it. Great in depth review! I need to find more info on our FMC LinkBelt Ls 6400 Excavator came with the DD 8v92 with a LaBounty Shear attachment. I have yet to see another one like it. So far my video is the only one on youtube.
I know this is a year later, but definitely a 3-71. HD-5B had the 2-71; HD-6 either had a non GM engine, or a 53 series GM diesel (I can't remember). As long as I'm posting PAmining, know of any large Allis dozers, like the 21 out near you?
I had thought the Terex was under GM at one time. My dad owned Cat D-6's and 7's but I had seen a Terex ( with the single ram) operating at a land fill once in the past. Very few to be seen in my area of the country in SE Louisiana. Guess the engine is a 2 cycle Detroit Diesel?
i like the way you say throttle and radiator ;-). however, i think the operator did'nt stay very cold with that thing at his back, wich is good in winter, but not so good in summer.
Lovely old dozer. Do you know what the op.weight of this machine was? Looks like a D7 size machine? Also, with the rad being at the back..did it have a fan that blew the warm air out of the rad, instead of sucking in..as on old JCB 3C backhoe/excavators etc? Nice to see such a different design - everything seems about turn on it, but obviously worked well. Looks every bit as good and strong as an equivalent CAT. Nice vid.
yeah i was thinking maybe a 3-71 but i remember hearing the old man we bot the dozer from sayin 3-53 but i was maybe 10 years old at the time & i just wasnt sure. but thanks alot for replying! i appreciate it. Michael
i gotta question. u seem to know about detroits & i dont bcuz i perfer a cummins but we had a 1947 allis chalmers hd7 crawler with a baker bulldozer blade on it & it had an inline 3 cylinder detroit but my question is what model & size would a 1947 3 cylinder detroit be??? id greatly appreciate an answer if u got one thanx.
Man what a diffrence the trubo makes on that, makes DD look like junk, neither version could even make 300hp.... You were saying the turbo made another 25 or so hp, LOL... That's really sad.
Sorry but ran a 83-30 and power was good but was trash... oil filter broke off and killed motor before I could shut down. overheated big time but cab was roomy.
they have one of these at an auction i am goin to! im looking for a cheap older machien... so wat better place than an auction eh hahaha, ive in vested and made $1589 total...... i could probly pay that up front and pay it off as i go... thats the plan hahaaha great vid, i will have to check that out (the reverse radiator lol)

I worked on the same kind of dozer with the same canopy! It was a lot of fun and I wish I still could work on it =(

Probably the cheapest thing to rebuild on this would be the old screaming 8v71. Parts are still available and still widely used.

@terrellfarms1 The TC12 (later upgraded to the 82-80) was the twin engine dozer produced by Euclid/Terex. That was a beast.
Odd question: Why is the right side rear tire on a loader always go flat first? Ive seen this on at least 20 loaders!

Yep, the fan blows out through radiator to the back. She equivalent to D8-D9. 36000 kg operating weight with ripper.

im not a hater on cat but i think cat coppied them on the singel lift cylinder
