- showing what I found cleaning up the parts for rebuild
quench was .036 which should have been plenty but I see signs that the piston and cylinder head were hitting
we will discuss this with my machine shop and correct the issue, hopefully just a little thicker head gasket is all that is needed.
thanks all! - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Good job following the evidence! I am just glad that nothing more catastrophic happened to the engine! With the needed adjustments and improvements she will be back even stronger!
Thanks OG, I'm hoping so!
You’re right about high side detonation. I’d take your time and put new rings in it. Also I’d take the valves out of the number one cylinder and check for straightness. Or all the valves if it was me. Good luck on your build.
Yeah I will go ahead and get the rings! I will vacuum test the heads and make sure they are all sealing up ok!
Foxes Abroad on the shop TV :)
yeah, I like those guys!
@@vrm86gt Every time they are out in the Shop, it just seems like they're having a good time. No matter what disaster they have on their hands lol.
Bought a 440 out of a super stocker years ago, the heads had the piston numbers slightly stamped on every chamber. Ran good just had a slight rattle on the return road, never did hurt it. Replaced the steel shim gaskets with composite and all was good.
Thanks, yeah probably tight quench and detonation crushed that bearing
Get it fixed and back on the track!
That is the plan!
Good morning VRM, I wonder when the contact happened was when the bearing failed.
How much piston to cylinder wall clearance you have.
That can bite you at TDC.
I agree with your machine shop .036 is not to tight.
That little dent looks like a piece of something went through the engine.
Are all of the ring ends intact?
You can butt a ring or detonate and chip off a piece ring.
Really a piece of anything out of a head manifold or anything.
Have a great day. 👍
Thanks ED! I will check all the rings today!
Did you check for piston depth in the bore, or the machine shop? I run .030 cometics on the 302 was in the red car, don't recall where the piston was, but do recall talking with Duane Busch about it, he said it was pretty tight, that's reason why I didn't run it at the track much, and kept the shift light at 6k.The piston can rock a little at TDC and bump the head. I've got .039 head gaskets on my 347, and think I have the pistons at zero deck, so we'll see how it turns out.
I measured .006 in the hole so calculated to .036, I know it was pretty tight and it got me this time!
I've, taken apart engines, with detonation. It looks like, someone took an ice pick, to the piston. Like, 100 or more divots int the piston top. Not, just one. Almost, looks like ingestion. The crushed rod bearing, could allow the piston to travel high enough to crush something, that was ingested. Just, my 2 cents.
true! Thanks for the tip!
Since your stang is track only id go with some high compression pistons and e85. Sent your heads to Ed and let him max port them and port you a TrickFlow carb intake also.
good ideas! I di get a trickflow carb intake, I'm going to try it unported first, casting looks pretty good as far as going high compression, I eventually will but just don't want to buy a new set of pistons just yet
He has heads ported to max, 300 on flow is awesome
Wondering why only one cylinder eas damaged? If it was the gasket all the pistons and bearings should be evident. I would look into the oil you were running too. Viscosity and additive package.
true! I am still investigating, might have been a small piece of foreign material?
Looks like you ingested something tiny. Maybe just a grain of sand. Im not sure how to explain the X, assuming you assembled the engine yourself.
yeah that is very likely!
It actually looks to me as a fob (foreign-born objest) that somehow got in the chamber on the piston , where are you on deck height ? Piston to vavles clearace? Head gasket thickness? Plugs looked lean to me also where are you on timing? If it was my engine I MOST DEFINITELY WOULD USE NEW RINĜS 4 SURE , CALL IT EXTRA INSURANCE YOU WON'T REGRET IT LATER EITHER PLUS ITS ALREADY DISASSEMBLED WHY NOT . ARE YOU USING NITROUS? MY POINT IS THERE IS NO OTHER MARKS OR SIMILARITIES TO OTHER PISTONS OR OTHER PLACES ON THE CHAMBERS FROM OTHER CYLINDERS ? I HAVE SEEN THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM B4 BUT IT WAS EITHER BENT VALVE TRAIN PARTS OR FOB NEVER SEEN A X OR A CROSS BEFORE THANKS FOR SHARING VERY INTRIGUING AND INTERESTING STORIES , UNFORTUNATELY IT MAY NOT SEEM THAT WAY TOO YOU MY FRIEND , REHONE THE CYLINDERS ALSO PLEASE IF NEEDED , REMEMBER TO KEEP IT SURGICALLY CLEAN LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP AND GOOD LUCK BROTHER
Thank you! pistons are .006 in the hole, gasket is .030 so .036 total quench. Got new rings ordered! I have a nitrous kit but not using it, bottle is not even in the car. I will check the valves! the block was honed and fit to the pistons at the machine shop i have only touched up the hone since
To me it's not piston hitting there be alot more damage, looks like oil issue, there b more then one bearing
Actually my friend dropped a bolt down into piston a d ran it like that intill it embedded into piston, and bearing had no issue
Piston was out of the hole most likely...
