This actually works better than I expected
Only with very oily thermal pastes like his... Ones with good thermal conductivity have much higher viscosity, so you cannot spread them with finger that easily... Probably you can spread MX-4 with finger with cost of used thermal paste amount...
But trying to do same with something like PK-3 will result in huge failure (you will leave layer that can be seen through, and all conductive stuff (particles) will be left as solid residue on finger)... Frankly PK-3 and other high conductivity pastes are pain in ass to spread on IHS... It is easier to do on smaller objects like naked dies.

I use a spudger or a credit card like item to spread it like that evenly. No other method makes sense to me - there will always be areas of poor/no coverage with dot or line patterns, and it ends up being a perfect quantity

Almost all stuff sticks to credit card instead of IHS, so in your attempts of evening layer down, you just removing it...
@@DimkaTsv there's a degree of that - that's why I squeeze it from a tube then smear it. What's left on the spudger or card is like less than .25 milL, which becomes negligible compared to component health and performance.

I’m a mechanic and I used the finger method when applying silicone to metal surfaces. Very simple, intuitive, and smooth. I wear gloves though

наношу лопаточкой. пакетика термопасты в комплекте с кулером хватило на 3 раза. 3\4 было намазано на процессор. 1\4 осталась на лопаточке , так бы на 4 раз хватило если бы не сопутствующие потери при нанесении. я не жмот, но и процессор не бутерброд . термопаста нужна для заполнения пустот а не быть прослойкой между кулером и процессором.

@@Qqqqql it drops the performance of the thermal paste, not to mention over long periods of time that oil will seep down and separate from the paste, resulting in it leaving the cpu and onto the motherboard or prongs underneath, it’s rare, but I’ve seen it

It's not a big problem, but putting on a glove is not such a hard task.

I would dip my finger in isopropyl to get the oil off first as the excess oil from our digits would probably decay the thermal paste faster, but I’m no expert.

Always clean hands with isopropyl alcohol first. Though it's just as effective to have a plastic spatula or a wedge of delrin

Why tf would it be any different? Thermal paste will at most save you about 30c and as long as is it spread (which pretty much any spread pattern will when you bolt down the cooler) it's gonna work. No matter if it's a thin or thick layer

since 25 years i do it exactly this way, i apply a small amount of the paste with my finger and never ever had a heat problem even with the standart cooler. nice to see the proof

its possible that oils on your finger may contaminate the paste, it may effect the overall performance off the paste. Like you know 0.001 degree higher.
Video idea: what if you unplug an internal storage device? (Try both the one with the windows install and a second one) and maybe while a game is running?

Genuinely no issue at all doing this, this is fine. It's just a little messy, so you'd rather use an applicator, but this works perfectly fine.
Probably the best way to apply thermal paste. Full coverage and very little thermal paste needed.

I’d be worried about impurities from an oily finger messing up the heat transfer. Do a temperature comparison between finger method and the other popular methods!
It takes a lot of oil/dirt impurities to take any heat transfer characteristics away and I mean "A LOT"

I use a latex glove to keep any oils from my skin getting in the thermal paste, but yeah, the finger method has been my go-to for years. Never had a problem with it.
The oils on your finger could in theory inhibit the thermal conductivity of the paste
However the difference is probably negligible
Don't touch it with your fingers, because then you have acidic and oily fluid on the chip which degrades the thermal paste over time.

Don't use too much, and don't go all the way to the edge. With the cooler pressure, some of it will go over the edge, and once the CPU heats up, it will become more liquid and might flow onto your motherboard, and cause a short.

Try mixing 2 thermal pastes 1 with a Low conductivity like 4mkw and other Wifi 10+ like the kryonaut

If you look carefully, in the bottom right corner there are still air pockets remaining even after removing the cooler. That's exactly why you don't use the "finger method" :D

You're missing the point... you don't wan't to cover the entire thing, the most ideal spread is a circle covering everything but the corners. If you square it you still only end up with the same heat-displacement but weaken the centre where most of the heat originates from.
reason being, the cpu is allot colder in the corners than the center, and thermal paste reacts more and conducts the cold better the thinner it is.
in short: A [O] spread works the most effective at cooling the hottest part of the cpu fast.
whilst a [[ ]] spread needs more time cooling, reacting slower as the corners need to be as hot as the center before the whole paste reacts at it's coldest.
don't do this. don't do an X, don't make a circle or square. Just do a thick dot directly in the center and the press does the rest itself.

yes, on perfectly square cpu's you want to go with a circle. but mainly because of the thinness of the paste when the aggregator presses it down. The thinner the paste, the better it cools.
ofc there are CPU's that is more rectangular, and whilst an oval shape is more ideal, I recognise that it's harder to apply an oval that covers it sufficiently. In that case, I'd go for an x pattern or similar.
But in this video, the CPU is square, so a dot of paste in the centre being pressed into a circle by the aggregator is the best way to cool down the cpu for reasons I specified. @@lyt_w8t

Thermal paste doesn’t “get colder the hotter it is” and the cpu heat sink is specifically designed to distribute the heat from the center, outwards. Thermal paste is ONLY used because it fills in small imperfections in the material between the cpu sink and the cpu cooler. The heat transfer equation is Q=kAdT, where A is surface area. The more surface area that is efficiently conducting heat, the more heat is transferred from the cpu.
Having thermal paste on every part of the cpu sink that touches the cpu cooler (like in this video) is optimal, as long as the paste isn’t on put on too thick.

I probe the thermal paste, and is very good for some components like CPU and GPU for the computers, thermal paste should not be applied to components that don't require it for heat dissipation. Avoid using thermal paste on non-heat-generating components or on surfaces where electrical conductivity might pose a risk, such as across circuit board traces or on connectors. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and recommendations for applying thermal paste to ensure proper usage
