This song was written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman. She and her husband did write some of her songs. Her husband, Neil Giraldo (Spider), wrote Hell is for Children, which is an amazing song!!
Pat Benatar: A four-time Grammy winner, Benatar is a classically trained mezzo-soprano. Her husband, Neil Giraldo, is the main guitarist in her band. They have two daughters. I saw Pat perform with Toto in 2016 with Neil and she can still belt out the songs!
You just be honest with those baby girls. My father taught me to be independent. He taught me to drive a stick shift, he especially taught me about money. By 6th grade I was balancing the family check book. I knew what he made, how to keep it private and how much running the household took. He took my brother and I to any concert we wanted and respected our music. Today he is 87 and Mama is 82. They still have a major role in my life but I am more beginning to take care of them which is sweet and sad at the same time. But I appreciate my Daddy. He is such a good Father.
Pat was opera trained and left the conservatory because when asked who she wanted to sound like she said Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin- she formed a band with a rock Guitarist Neil Spyder Gerardo and punk drummer Myron Frankenstein Grombacher- she married Neil and they have been together more than 40 years. Her music is so good because it’s a mix of opera like singing of the quality of Steve Perry of Journey, killer guitar and killer drums- she is a very devout Catholic and she and her husband donate heavily to help children who are victims of physical abuse. Check out her song Hell is for Children
Pat is definitely worth the dig in the rabbit hole. Her songs are more poppy, but her voice has always been amazing. Hit me with your best shot, heartbreaker, we belong, invincible are just a small taste of her best work.
Try Pat Benetar's Heartbreaker. When I was a kid I got in trouble at school for having the lyrics written out and teaching my friends to sing it with me, LOL
Pat Benatar is one of a handful of female actual rockers, like Heart. Surprising you haven't already reacted to her. You can never go wrong with Heartbreaker.
GOSH: PAT WAS SO GREAT!! MISS hearing her vocals....THANKS for this one!! I seem to remember, in high school: there were two "camps" - one group of girls who dressed like Pat and the other that dressed like Madonna!! HUGS, BP!!!
Hey brother. Im an old man. Zeppelin freak. But I like different types music. Thats why I listen to your reactions. I lived in a very abusive life as a child in the 50s and 69s. When MTV came out pat was on it A lot. She dud a song called Hell is for Children. It made me tear up. Where was she when I needed her? The song came about because after life at home you saw child abuse for first time and wrote that song. Do are pretty good with reactions. Love what you do. When led zeppelin. It dies my heart good seeing young people discover led zeppelin for first time. Proves pages song still do great with test of time. If you read. Thank you. Ron
I was a huge fan of Pat Benatar as a kid. The first thing I heard from her was Invincible from The Legend of Billie Jean soundtrack, which is another banger, and I was just blown away, and got my hands on everything else I could from her and have loved her since. So you should definitely do Invincible and also Heartbreaker. But another one I would recommend, with a caveat that it is about child abuse, is Hell is for Children. The guitar in the final third of the song is stunning. It was considered controversial at the time because people just looked at the title without ever listening to the song and realizing that she didn't mean it that way. She meant that abused kids go through hell.
Knight and Chapman wrote "Love is a Battlefield" as more of a ballad, and they were surprised to hear what Pat Benatar did with it. According to Knight: "When Mike and I first heard it we were horrified, we hated it, because it was so different. But then it became such a huge hit, and we had to step out and say, You know, they did a very good rendering of it, and that's how it was meant to be. There's lots of ways you can hear that song, and they're all good."
The JAM.... 😊. Love this song and the video. I watch this video constantly in the 80s when it came out and it does tug at your heart. Because there's so many girls out there in the same situation that's portrayed in this video.
She was the "it" girl in the 80's. So many girls cut their hair like her, wore the bandanas on their heads, dressed like her, and of course loved, loved, loved her music. Oh, and all of us guys loved her too!
I’m sure someone mentioned it somewhere in these comments, but check out “Hell is for Children,” released after she saw an expose’ about child abuse. It’s in-your-face and dark, but unforgettable.
Management put her together with a guitar player / songwriter / producer at the very start. They wrote and produced almost everything. Including 2 daughters and now grandkids. They win!
This is her decent stuff. You should check out her earlier hits. Those were her best hits. There's so many to choose from. Hit me with your best Shot, Promises in the Dark, Hell is for Children, Heartbreaker, You better Run, Treat me Right and so many more
The marriage & music partnership of Pat & Neil is a must discover….Pat writes lyrics, Neil (guitarist) composes. We Belong Fire & Ice Hell is for Children
Finally, Pat is amazing live, her music helped me through my teenage years. Seen her live 5 times. Her and husband guitarist are magic live. She also does blues. This song was in the movie The Legend of Billie Jean.
You need to check out more Pat songs because she was huge with all her hits. She was the bad ass strong independent woman at that time who didn’t put up with crap. Lots of girls dressed like her ….
Pat was the first Queen of MTV! When videos were new, a lot of artists resented making them and only used live performance tapes. Pat was one of the early ones that treated the video like its own form of art.
Pat is the best! I saw her and her husband Neil Giraldo (lead guitarist of her band) twice in the past few years. They played in smaller clubs, but are just as much a power house as ever!!!!
The 80's bro a great time to be alive. The women and the music it changed people lives for the better. We created our own music and t-shirts and our teacher saw that and they were in ,💯 percent with direction. Alot of our teachers were on 22or 23 and they really got involved with us because we were 18to 19 and we know where they hung out on Fri nite and it right over the boarder between PA and MD and the drinking again was 18in MD and we would drink with our teachers and share ideas what a great time to be alive and today we are all close.💪✌️👍
This is the first video on MTV to have spoken words. Pat's video for You Better Run was the second video to air on MTV ever, right after The Buggles' Video Killed The Radio Star. Saw her in 1988 with her band and in 2016 when she was on tour with her husband, Neil. She is 5' of pure talent!
Another one of those crushes I had - Pat, Joan Jett, Blondie and Olivia Newton John. This is a great song, on video rotation over & over on MTV. Keep going down this rabbit hole.
Pat Benatar is said to be a Mezzo Soprano classically trained Opera singer that has 4.5 Octave. As a teen growing up during the 80's, she was someone that I looked up to that mesmerized me. I copied her look & style as much as possible during that time. 😃
I saw Pat on stage at 'Rocklahoma' September 6th, 1980 while she was touring her album "Crimes of Passion" along with Sammy Hagar, Van Halen and the Doobie Brothers!!! Was HOT...but a Fantastic Show!! That was a couple years before this song was released! But I remember everyone dancing to this at the clubs after the vid came out...was a time.
❤❤ OMG,65yr old just turned TV and saw, LMAO, My Uncle Frank ( actually my Dad's 2nd cousin RIP)🎉 is in this. &&& HUGE LOL..4:55 when you start commenting, you can see him through whole comment...on far right of screen ,sitting at bar holding drink with the light shining off his bald spot 😊😅 Gave me a Smile 😊❤Rock On Pegasus ❤
in 1985 I had two jobs and my late afternoon until the restaurant closed, a cook in a restaurant a small place nothing demanding one winter. A radio played near me and I filled any orders came my way but listened to all the pop songs the local radio play list . I will always hear these songs in my head I heard them play over and over from 4 to 5 pm until 10 pm non stop. Nice times
Pat and husband/guitarist Neil did a short concert tour last year. And they performed “Imagine That” at the Patsy Cline tribute last year. The show from The Ryman, was rebroadcast on PBS TV in the US in November.
I love Pat. Saw her last July in Hershey Pa. At 71 she sounded awesome. Dont remember what you have done by her, but she has so many great songs. Check out the album Crimes of Passion. Love that entire album. Love Wuthering Heights. Not radio airplayed, but her voice is so amazing in that one. Im Gonna Follow You is also amazing. But then theres so many that are good. Gotta dive into her more. One of the best female rockers of those days!!!
I put this in my best songs ever playlist - I can remember watching this video as a kid on TBS Night Tracks - and loved the video - pretty groundbreaking at the time during the MTV era. If you loved this, you'll love "Invincible" - another banger in the same vein.
This was my favourite song in the 80's, disco night on the ice, which is where i met my wife, The 80's was the best era for music and creative videos, fashion, and hair styles, alot from america also, Im from the UK, we had some big influences from america and the movies, flight jackets and so on with top gun, the sun glasses as well the the dalas fashion shoulder pads for the ladies, big hair styles, pastel colours
I was lucky enough to see Pat Benatar in an industry showcase at The Roxy theater on the Sunset Strip 1979-80, before her first lp came out. She was fantastic and everybody there knew she was going to be a star. I worked at a record store at the time and we got that first record and played the hell out of it. It took a bit for people to discover it. This was at the end of the disco era, new music was movin' up. Finally Heartbreaker hit and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" . That whole first lp is a tour de force. You can't go wrong with the next 3 either. ❤Love Pat Benatar!
Pat is actually classically trained, as in bel canto, as in operatic. She said something to the fact that it took her a bit to find her voice, that she initially sounded like Julie Andrews. The song I recommend, probably my most favorite of her singles is "Shadows of the Night." Another song of hers I adore was not released as a single, is from the "Metropolis" soundtrack called "Here's My Heart." Oh, and also "One Love."
Pat Benatar is a force in music for decades now. She’s still performing with her husband and lead guitarist Neil Giraldo and they both still have it. She read an article in the NYTimes in the early 80s about the silent Epidemic of child abuse. Back then it just wasn’t talked about in public. It was considered a families shame and was kept quiet for too long. She and her husband were moved to write a song and came out with Hell Is For Children. It stands to this day as a major anthem against child abuse and got the subject out into the open in way it had never been. It’s also a darn good piece of rock and roll. As a father you must react to this consequential song.
Why does everyone forget that it was Roger Capps who actually wrote the song and brought it to Neil and Pat and they added to it and rocked it out! I guess Roger doesn’t care if you forget him. He keeps getting paid. Lol
I did forget to credit Mr.Capps who was definitely involved but I don’t believe has sole writing credit. As the excerpt from interview with Neil Giraldo would indicate……. Giraldo has explained that “Hell Is for Children” was inspired by a series of New York Times articles about child abuse that Benatar read and was deeply moved by. It inspired her initial lyrics, which were supplemented by bassist Roger Capps. “I got a hold of it and I finished writing the melody and I worked on the chorus, and I did the outro section to build it up, because I wanted the whole song to be very sad as the beginning,” Giraldo told Songfacts. “I wanted to make it intense so you could really feel the pain of what the song was about. So by the time it ended, you’ve got to be exhausted. And that was the point.
@@geoffthomas3238 No, definitely not sole writing credit, you’re right. He’s a friend of mine and told me how it came about. He did originally bring what part of the song he had to Pat and all three of them then contributed to it. That’s what he said happened. And, most specifically, they also added the strong rock edge to it. Made it a hit with all of those movements, etc. Neil’s a crazy rock brilliant man!
His role in the song was major. He’s a very talented musician and writer. Thank you for bringing that forward definitely not correct to recognize that gem of a song and not include Roger Capps
Def a banger! I loved her harder earlier stuff, this came out in high school and it was a hit, prob the first big commercial hit, great song great time great year! bros, bikes, beers n babes in that order, partyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! Love is a Battlefield a War of the heart and minds! Dam the 90s!!
I saw her with REO speedwagon and Fleetwood Mac in the early 90s and they all killed it. Check out Hell is for children or promises in the dark from her. Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
You asked about who wrote this song. It was co-written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight. Chapman wrote many songs for Benatar and notably, introduced her to Neil Giraldo who she later married. Giraldo, produced this song as well as played lead guitar and has been a long time collaborator with Benatar. The couple were inducted into the Rock-and-Roll hall of fame in 2022.
Pat Benatar was HUGE for us!!! So much more; “Fire and Ice”, “Heartbreaker”, “Hell is for Children”; just for starters ❤
@jacqueline4514 She was always on Fire!!!
Sorry Pat, if Love is a Battle Field then it ain't love!
He'll is for children is a good one.
Promises In the Dark!
"Hell Is For Children" is heartbreaking.
Pat Benetar was MASSIVE in the early/mid 80s. Super talented rocker. Hit after hit.
"Hit me with your best shot". Love it!
The final "Fire Away" in Hit Me is superb. Pat's vocal control was phenomenal.
One of the coolest 80s song! Also great: "We belong".
I adore that song. The echoing synthesizer had me mesmerized like dropping super bouncy balls on piano strings.
@billkeithchannel the children choir!
@ Heck yeah!
A total earworm 👍👍👍
More Pat Benatar, please. Her older stuff is FIRE!
This song was written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman. She and her husband did write some of her songs. Her husband, Neil Giraldo (Spider), wrote Hell is for Children, which is an amazing song!!

Back in the 80s there were at least 2 Pat Benatars in every high school!! Great times! ❤
Yeah, at least! And a few Cindi Laupers.
😁 reminds me of Fast TImes at Ridgemont High!
@@mattblatchley2061 I mean, that movie is actually spot on vis a vis my high school in FL b/w 82 and 86. Ridiculous! LOL!!!

Bwahaha that's a fact 💯 😅

And bass player, Roger Capps. He was there from the beginning. Helped form the band.
Trained as an opera singer, We live for love🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 Rocks🩷 shows her range!
I love that song, its often overlooked.
Pat and Neil finally got into the R&R HOF. Deservedly so.🤩🤩
She got delayed for so long, because she didn’t want to be inducted without her husband getting inducted with her.
Pat is definitely worth the dig in the rabbit hole. Her songs are more poppy, but her voice has always been amazing. Hit me with your best shot, heartbreaker, we belong, invincible are just a small taste of her best work.
You better run, treat me right & promises in the dark are one of my favorites. Seen her couple of years ago & she still sounds great!
She had so many great tracks
That's how MTV and VH1 were when it first came out. Videos were just as important as the music, some were mini movies. I miss those days😢
If ever you want an 80s feel, this is the perfect song
Love Pat Benatar, always. One of the 80s Queens
We had the best music back in the 70s and 80s. Love Pat!
We were so lucky.

I’m sure someone mentioned it somewhere in these comments, but check out “Hell is for Children,” released after she saw an expose’ about child abuse. It’s in-your-face and dark, but unforgettable.

I had a roommate in military academy that was basically obsessed with Pat Benatar.
Major fan! 😎

Hell is for children will floor you...one of the best late 80s bangers.
That was so popular when I was young.... And it was empowering to us teenage girls. LJ
“Shadows of the Night” is one of my favorite Pat Benatar songs! 🎶
I saw her with REO speedwagon and Fleetwood Mac in the early 90s and they all killed it. Check out Hell is for children or promises in the dark from her. Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️

Man I love Pat Benatar this was a big part of the 80s Queen
You asked about who wrote this song. It was co-written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight. Chapman wrote many songs for Benatar and notably, introduced her to Neil Giraldo who she later married. Giraldo, produced this song as well as played lead guitar and has been a long time collaborator with Benatar. The couple were inducted into the Rock-and-Roll hall of fame in 2022.
Heartbreaker💥❤
