I matched in December in the military match and I am SO happy that I did not go to a match day celebration. While my school did not have one for the military people (lol so it's not like it was an option), half of us were absolutely thrilled with our placements, half were not happy. My friend wanted exactly where my husband and I matched (exact program and location), and I thank the lord we were not around her b/c it is a real thing- even if you think your friends are amazingly qualified, some will not get their top choices and that's something that may be followed with big emotions. My husband and I got the place that all three of us wanted and my dear friend got her very last ranked option (with the military that is not actually a very low number b/c for our specialty and branch of military- there were only 4 locations, but for her this was a location across the country from her support system etc). My husband and I did get our first choice, and even still I had some big emotions to process. With that being said, match day celebrations have been a thing for a longgg time so tons of people would disagree with my take and have enjoyed celebrating with their classmates. But the fact that 1) the chance of being upset was possible, I would have wanted to process that in privacy and not need to hide my sadness 2) Looking back, my screaming of joy would've been very insensitive to people who were upset 3) I thought it was fun to celebrate intimately with my immediate family, I am happy I did not go to a traditional match day thing
also a number of my friends who are participating in the normal match are not going to our school's match day celebration for reasons u listed in your video. :)
