Japanese use black in the same way we use "reverse". It is not always has to be black in colour. Like Goku Black, Black Polnareff, Black Hanekawa. All of them are alternates.

originally SNK wanted to put black flames on Orochi Chris since KOF 97, but didn't look good so the developers put him purple flames like Iori
