In Kozhikode airport you have to go 6 hours prior. And yes, I've almost missed a flight before.

How to keep track of the gate no ?
Gate number would be mentioned on the boarding pass. After security checks, you head to that gate number and sit and wait. Keep checking the boarding time on the screens. If you have long time left, you can walk around, browse through shops, have food, go to toilet etc. Come back to the gate before the boarding time and keep checking the screens and announcements in case of any last minute changes.
