Wow. This is amazing and YOU are amazing for doing this. I'm also trying to make a cat shelter from a cooler box and this video has been so helpful 👍🏼 Thank You!
I made one from a storage tote & insulation. Gotta get some straw now & add a windbreaker like this. I kinda wish I had invested in a 5" holesaw instead of a 6".... after making it I tried it out on our inside cats & our fat football "Monkey" had no problem fitting through the 6" hole
I made a 6 inch hole - but used a flang connector from 6 to 5 inch in another video - our feral cats did not use the cooler until I took off the 5 inch reducer and went back to 6 inches.
It has been cold for about 2 weeks her in NYS. off and on. I put my game cameras out to watch the igloo cat houses - the cats are coming up to them but not going inside. I have decided to remove the 5 inch reducer and take the 6 inch coller and turn it into the cooler - there by covering the cut out more. I reset my camera out to see what happens next - I'll be putting cat nip into the holes to entice the feral cats to go in.
2023-09Sept24 - we just put out the 4(four) cat shelters in preparation of the cold season - on Long Island in NYS we have temps starting below 50 degrees now. Temp wet down to 49 degrees - and looking at the shelters on the 25th - they were all used.
The one entrance works fine. With 2 entrances the cold air chill moves thru with the wind - in 30 degrees Farenht it defeats the purpose of even doing this in the 1st place.
I have been using and trying to find the larger ones - they are apx 150 quart 248 can type ones - this allows the cat to move away from the entrance to a secluded side of the igloo where there is no direct wind current. I look on FB marketplace to local people trying to sell used ones - and then I offer less to reduce my cost.
You almost have to build one and try it. I use game cameras on the cat house to see who comes in/out on some days. You might try something like that. GL
I bought a 6 inch hole cutter on Amazon - they work on any drill - nothing special - I used it about 6 times and have not used it since specifically "6 Inch 152mm Bi-Metal Heavy Duty Hole Saw, 30mm Depth Steel Hole Cutter & Hex Shank Drill Bit Adapter Drilling Cutter for Smooth and Fast Cutting"
I def appreciate the fact that you’re making a shelter for cats, but damn, the plastic that your drill is spewing all over the grass…yikes. Maybe throw down a tarp to catch that stuff, and dispose of it instead?
I made three igloo coolers 3- two of the 3 are being used - two are are of this type and one I made out of a dog house - si I have 4 in actual use out of 5. They seem to like this type better then the igloo: facebook.com/marketplace/item/1359304741175868/?ref=saved&referral_code=null
We feed the feral cats all day - these mats are under the feeding stations - so far at minus 3 degrees the water is not frozen the 6 inches of snow the other day melted off the mats.- now with winter and real cold temps and snow we put in these matts - the are electric - the company also sells a thermostat that turns on at 34 degrees and shuts off at 50 degrees - heattrak.com/products/heated-snow-melting-entrance-mat-medium-30x48

Hey what kind of drill is that. My drill wasn’t strong enough to cut through the cooler when I attempted. I used a Hyper Tough brand from Walmart.

What size igloo for this shelter cat house? Thank you 🙏🏻 for being a cat lover.

I wonder if this will work for wild rabbits during the cold?

I am sure the cat will enjoy its lunch
What 6” drill did you use or recommend?

yes, true comment - good suggestion.
