What a great interview. Mann brought such an endearing warmth to the role of Larry. I always loved watching him rehearse the dancers and interact with Cassie. And Alyson Reed is a legend - perfection, if you ask me.

Cassie the character was super annoying. That character ruined the movie.

Went to Jr High with Alyson Reed. She had the leading role in all our musicals. We were all in awe of her even back then.

Alyson Reed, so talented. We went to highschool together and I was one of her biggest fans, always!

Oh my God I was obsessed with Terrence Mann back then. I was thirteen. I literally waited outside the stage door to meet him and then chickened out when he walked out because I was so embarrassed!

This film should be remade. Attenborough was the wrong choice for the director.

Should "Have" not should "Of". Proper grammar never hurts...K?

I disagree, I feel this was a story about people who love to dance, not a dance movie. Hence it needed a director to direct actors not only a choreographer .

The absolute worst movie from a classic Broadway play EVER. Universally panned it nearly destroyed Michael Douglas's career. Bizarre scenes that didnt follow the musical sequences of ACL at all. Songs dropped, ridiculous scene of Cassie up in the rafters singing to no one.

Whilst it's an uneven film at times, there are moments that really pop. And no, it wasn't universally panned nor did it nearly wreck MD's career.

I saw the stage version first and then I saw the Godawful film version. I don't think I can adequately describe my reaction because I was beyond disappointed. To take such a moving musical and turn it into that awful film was a crime. One of my biggest disappointments was the horribly stereotypical portrayal of Diana. In the stage version, she's a normal girl who happens to be Puerto Rican. It's just an aspect of her. It doesn't define her nor does she constantly throw it in everyone's faces. In the film version they made her this sexy spitfire with attitude. The stage version's Diana is based on a real life Puerto Rican dancer Priscilla Lopez and her Diana was closer to the reality of many Hispanics; just normal people. Funny how it took a show based on real people to get a real and normal portrayal of a Hispanic. The film version just had to make her into a stereotype. And that was just one of many major problems I had with the film version. It was terrible. The worst stage to film adaptation I have ever seen in my life.

Diana had fallen in love with the big dream so they all became ONE big dance troupe gallantly marching on. I hope you get it.

They messed up by changing ‘the music and the mirror’ number. The film is cringe but I still watch it 🙂
