This is clearly one of the most touching moments in that movie. Yamil Borgess' performance is so strong, so sincere! It knocks me off my feet everytime...
You know, I've loved this song for many years, but it just ocurred to me as a former teacher that he was picking on her because he saw her talent, which I used to do to my students, haha. I've had a variety of interpretations of this song, but that one just ocurred to me, lol, as I was thinking about it from her perspective and not the teacher's.
So many years watching this clip and I always feel the same... love. I love her attitude, her voice, her self confidence. I felt something Morales, I felt everything! Such a wonderful actress and singer 😍👏🏻👏🏻

And the kids yelled, "Nothing!" They called me "Nothing" And Karp allowed it, Which really makes me burn. They were so helpful. So I dug way down to the bottom of my soul... And cried. 'Cause I felt... nothing.
I think it's the double meaning of "nothing" at the end that gets me, as she obviously feels something at that point, haha, which is the most beautiful part of the song (all of which I love).
Theater buffs tend to be like that. They tend to be really overly-critical of film adaptations. I remember back when PAW Duggan made videos, he theorized the reason for this was because fans of the theater would see the stage versions first and basically associate the musical with that performance, so anything different just feels wrong to them.
"All your trials big and small They mean nothing after all It means nothing, means nothing after all All the good men you've known They will all die alone It means nothing, means nothing after all"
this is movie is soooo bad bc they made the story about Zack and Cassie, if they had stuck with the original idea, this movie would be a well-remembered classic
I disagree. This movie is perfectly classic to my childhood. One of the only movies I recorded from TV to VHS. I remember every song they sang, and was always way more vested in the dancers than the side plot drama-trauma series.
@@mombear5116 while that’s totally valid, the Zack-Cassie thing is frustrating because of how much time it takes away from everyone else because, let’s face it, it IS the main plot of the movie. Which makes sense; movies need single protagonists to revolve around, and the stage musical was entirely about a group of people who, being background characters, reveal they have lives and hopes and dreams we seldom consider. But in the movie, a lot of that gets undermined so Cassie can sing another song (or more annoyingly, steal a song someone else sang), depriving the others of the opportunities they usually get to be in the spotlight. I don’t think this movie is considered positively (especially considering how beloved the stage version is) because of its attempt to make the focus on any one person rather than everyone.
@@C.V317 Good points. I do recall being annoyed by the Cassie character and that she detracted from the more enjoyable acts in the movie. I guess I had put that aspect out of my memory.
Not to be that person but why does the entire 1985 film sound flat. Vocals? Off key. Speech? Also off key. It's like the whole film was re-voiced in post by AI
The movie was far better than the play. I saw it at the Shubert Theater. The movie was lightyears better! At least everyone was in step for the Gran finally
William Dixon... There are very few movies of musicals that are better than their stage counterparts... Little Shop of Horrors and Grease are two that are. And quite honestly, I think this movie is slightly better than the stage version. I’ve seen it twice on stage, once on tour in the early 90’s and the Broadway revival and I find the stage show kind of meh especially the “One” number, it’s very lackluster compared to the movie version. Yeah, this movie is not perfect. The dancing is great. The acting is fine, this isn’t The Crucible. The singing is good, but, not as bad as everyone is bitching about. You want to talk about bad singing? Head on over to the Les Miserables movie! 🙉
I feel like It's a direction issue more than the actors. It was sung quite well. But, for me, the additions and odd sound mixing choices really distracted me from the emotional weight of the song. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I can't even watch this scene.

Over and over again she captures my heart! Terrific performance!

How TF do we not have this movie and amazing character shown to us in Puerto Rican school! Que inspiracion!
