Usually in shows and movies, one of the main things creators will do to hint or point out the obvious is by having other characters around them say it.

Yeah. Ultimate Slowburn. If they fully went for it, the complexity of a male bi disaster character going through all that, with a payoff, not to mention Cas' behavior- would have blown most representation out of the water. They created something great & unique here on accident, something that was really going for them - and they could not see it, they just had to tie the knot in a meaningful & graceful way in the end. The final would have been loved by most, instead we got a weird half-canon/dead anyways end no one liked.

Villain: he’s a grumpy angel
Dean: oh my god you have castiel
Try that with Cas and you get:

I can tell you I've never watched the show but I've somehow ended up falling through a destiel rabbit hole. I've seen memes, and other video edits and compilations, and even ended up reading sad fics about them lmao 😭 And let me tell you the first video of destiel scenes compilation I saw left me so. What the fuck. I was like I feel all the feelings and I don't even know these characters 😭😭and I was SHOCKED when I saw people being against destiel or calling destiel shippers delusional because it's like ? girl it's fucking transparent these men were in lovE. And even if they didn't kiss or end up together (that ending - when I found out what happened I was like they should've paid supernatural fans reparations to cover going to therapy because what the hell) it doesn't matter because they have such a beautiful bond and interesting dynamic so of course people will want to ship them and that's okay! it's fun! it's beautiful!

On another note, Destiel came up in a conversation with my husband a while back(don't remember how) and my Baptist pastor's son of a husband bluntly said "Of course Dean is in love with him. Cas is a literal angel! He technically perfect and Dean never showed interest in any other guy till he came across Cas. Besides, it would make sense for a human to fall in love with an angel after being around them for as long as Dean has, regardless of sexual preferences." I was happily floored. Yeah, it's seriously screwed up and really pisses me off when I think about it. 'Hmm let's Mindf**k the entire LGBTQ community by stringing them along for about 10 full seasons, then kill off half of their most popular romantic gay couple in the worst passive way possible'. As a member of the LGBTQ community myself, it felt as if I had been impaled through my back by a sharpened telephone pole that somehow managed to miss piercing my heart. To say that I feel betrayed, insulted and disrespected would be a giant understatement. The funny thing is that I've never been much of a Destiel shipper to begin with, but now I am just because the writers went out of their way to royally screw those who are Destiel shippers. (I shipped a slightly different gay couple that never happened. I won't say which one, but Dean was part of it). Who does that to someone?? Obviously a sadistic idiot who really doesn't care about the people who wholeheartedly support their show.

He reminds me of Dean, but not as funny. In fact, the Salvatore brothers seem a lot like Sam and Dean. Sam is Stefan and Dean is Damon. They line up pretty well, I'd say. That's where the similarities end, though.

Pay attention when watching the show to the fact that before Cas stayed in the Bunker... Dean had ONE nightstand in his room... while Cas was staying there... magically there were 2 in Dean's bedroom (one on either side of the bed)... after Cas left, back to one. Yeah... nothing happened between them...SURE.
I love remembering the day I was rewatching random episodes of the show and my dad joined me. I don't remember exactly what episode was it, but Dean and cas start having an argument and my dad goes like "man they're a real handsome couple, it's amazing to look at them". When I told him that they had the development of a couple but we never could see it really happening (like Sam and Eileen for example), my old man freaked out. In the end, looks like everybody gets on their knees for deancas

I am still so, SO angry about how the writers ended their relationship. The two of them were so well written that I probably always will be, that's how much of an impression they left on me. I once read a comment someone left that, in my mind, perfectly sums up Dean and Castiel:

Someone pointed out to me that when Castiel is working at the shop (as Steve), he's human, and it's the first time he has seen Dean's face and not just his soul, and I can't stop thinking about that or the fact that Cass looks shocked because it's Dean but also speechless because the man is very handsome.

I honestly feel proud that we as a fandom made Destiel a thing 😭🙏 We made such a ruckus about a hunter and an angel being in love so much that it happened in the show. How many times does that happen on tv? Misha and Berens fought hard for us to make the confession happen in the first place and i'm thankful for that. I never thought i'd be able to say that destiel is canon now. Tho i'm furious at the CW for living in the stone age and refusing to get with the times 🙄 The show was ending and it still was like pulling teeth for them to let a main character be gay. They even took Dean away from us bc THEY KNEW he was never going to be happy with anyone else but Cas. They knew they couldn't pull that happy wife, happy life story with Dean like they did with Sam. Ok people, not that there's anything wrong with any of these suppositions, let's remember this is a show about brothers, born into generations of hunters and demons and as their lives evolve, Angels and gods and monsters, who also have to psychology and physically deal with that reality. This is "Castiel's" first assignment on Earth. He's very child like as is Dean whom is also devilishly sarcastic and funny. Many of the puns that are thrown about are from pop culture in the 60's and 70's as well as the double entendres. So albeit while this was very well put together, and maybe I need to go back and watch the show for a third time 😘 I think you saw what you wished to see. Not that there's anything wrong with that!! ✌️

Magi V It would usually mean “reciprocate” as an action - as in Dean doesn’t have time to do or say anything in response - rather than being a description of his emotional state, the way scripts are typically written. So I would not take the script to mean Dean doesn’t love Cas, just that he was shocked and didn’t overcome it before Cas got vanished. Generally with scripts you try to convey the emotional internal stuff through your dialog and actions, and leave the director and actors to decide exactly what it means. Though SPN has been going long enough to have their own style, so I suppose they could do it differently, but it’d be weird. Like, after 15 seasons Jensen and Jared know Dean and Sam better than the writers do, they don’t need the writers telling them how their characters are feeling in response to things.

I'm sure that, with the dozens of writers who have contributed to Supernatural, a few of them have deliberately added low-key context, but at the end of the day the creators decided it didn't fit _their_ character and only had Cas come out.

You are not the only one and I applaud Jensen for just knowing that's what Dean would say. I mean think about it, Dean says I love you to everyone he cares about, he's said it to Cas a couple of times in a friend kind of way, but it's incredibly rare when he actually admits he NEEDS anyone. He needs Cas here like he needs his brother, even if this is eluding to romanticism and not brotherhood( in the scene you mention), it still means that bottom line, Dean trusts and loves Cas just as deeply as he does his own brother, and should that turn into more than that in the future, it's going to mean a lot more than an I love you.
It's going to mean that Cas is one of the few people that he actually feels he can compromise his feelings with, tell him things that he feels he can't ever admit out loud to anyone else. Your right, need is ever more intimate than love will ever be.
I can also say that because I know what it's like to be in a relationship, I know what it feels like to not only love someone, but feel like You can't live without them, like You absolutely need them in your life to keep existing.
