Forgiveness of sins in the New Covenant means re-establishing physical fellowship with the Lord without having to offer animal sacrifices. Eternal life means having your sins covered, having Christ’s righteousness imputed unto your soul.

I was taught that to be in the presence of God for eternal life, we had to be sinless. So believing in Jesus, that he died on the cross so that our sins can be forgiven (past, present and future) and we can have his free gift of eternal life.

      Thanks Dan .
Romans was clearly written to the already born again, and is not framed as Evangelistic - unlike the book of John (20:31) .
Belief in the Christ (Jesus) for His doubtless Guarantee of Everlasting Life alone regenerates (John 1:12-13,3:1-18,4:10-14,5:24,6:47,11:23-27) .
Confession with the mouth is a work done by believers to deliver from temporal wrath . Not to obtain Everlasting Life .
      Zane Hodges states :
"10:9. The response of the mouth should be a confession directly addressing Jesus with the designation “Lord.” This confession is made in prayer (vv 12-13). This is an appeal to His Lordship for the needed deliverance from divine wrath.
The direct appeal to Lord Jesus necessitates that the one who makes the appeal should believe that Jesus is alive to hear it. Thus, the attitude of the heart is crucial. When one calls on Jesus with his mouth in order to be delivered, he therefore must have faith in his heart that God has raised Him from the dead. When these two conditions obtain, the individual Jew who calls on Him will be delivered from God’s temporal wrath.
10:10. What happens in the heart, though vital, is not enough for deliverance. The heart is where it all begins. One gets righteousness (He is believed for righteousness) by the believing response of the heart. Jesus is the object of that faith.
But in the same way, He is also the object of our confession: but with the mouth He is confessed for deliverance. The Jerusalem Bible captures the actual sense almost perfectly: “By believing from the heart you are made righteous; by confessing with your lips you are saved.” While the Jew is granted righteousness on the basis of faith in his heart, God will not grant him deliverance on the basis of that faith alone. He must also confess with his mouth.
10:11. The believer should not hesitate to confess the Lord Jesus Christ. If the Jewish person had put faith in this “Stone of collision (9:33),” he should also fulfill the admonition of the prophet that he should “not be ashamed.”
Obviously as a follow-up from v 10, Paul construes the necessity to “not be ashamed” as the functional equivalent of a command to confess Jesus Christ. Contrary to much contemporary theology, neither Paul nor the rest of the NT requires confession as a condition for receiving everlasting life (cf. John 12:42-43; Acts 16:31; Eph 2:8-9; 1 Tim 1:16).
What Paul exactly has in mind here is made clear in the following verses.
10:12-13. Although the text of these verses (especially v 13) has been used innumerable times as though it referred to a cry for salvation from hell, in context the verses are no such thing. God’s anger rests heavily upon unbelieving Israel and their first step must be to believe in their Messiah for righteousness (v 10a). But though necessary, this alone will not bring deliverance from God’s temporal anger. In fact, deliverance comes by confessing “Lord Jesus!” with the mouth (v 10b).
This truth is affirmed in Joel 2:32. The Lord Jesus is able to respond lavishly to all who appeal to Him. Since, in fact, Jesus is Lord of all, His ability to respond applies to all, either Jew or Greek. This terminology becomes a Pauline way to identify all Christians (either Jew or Greek) who assembled together and invoked “the name of the Lord” (1 Cor 1:2; 2 Tim 2:22). It does not describe a one-time event of crying out “Lord Jesus!” Those who openly and regularly appeal to the Lordship of Jesus (i.e., in corporate worship) receive what Paul is actually discussing-deliverance from divine wrath.
And the Lord deals richly with them. Not only are they justified with a perfect righteousness through what they believe in their heart, but they are also delivered from God’s wrath by appealing, with their mouth, to the power of the exalted Lord.
The quotation from Joel 2:32 shows that the prophet is concerned with temporal wrath and with the end times, not salvation from hell. Christians of every age are living in the last days.
The Jewish believer (and Gentile as well) should not stop with faith in the heart, vital as that was. He should join the fellowship of others who made it a habit to appeal to the name of the Lord with the mouth."

Satan and Demons Have Eternal Life In The Lake Of Fire But Their Sins Are Not Forgiven

Believing on Christ for eternal life is in essence believing Him for forgiveness where both actions are simultaneous. The thief on the cross was convinced and believed on Christ where he was forgiven and granted eternal life for all eternity simultaneously - Luke 23:42-43. The blind man whom Jesus healed in John 9 who later came to faith in Jesus was both forgiven and granted eternal life simultaneously.
John 9:35-38 - 35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38 And he said, LORD I BELIEVE. And he worshipped him.

We aren't told in John's account that the blind man believed in the Christ (Jesus) "FOR the forgiveness of sins".
      Nor the thief .
Nowhere in the book of John is that the content/object of saving faith whereby one is born again with Everlasting Life .
Forgiveness of sins and Everlasting Life aren't identical .
Forgiveness of sins is a benefit of being born again with Everlasting Life . Not an indistinguishable essence .

@@timgrady4630 John 9:38 clearly states that the blind man whom Jesus healed BELIEVED. Once a person believes on Christ, that person is ETERNALLY SAVED in a nanosecond where all the person's sins are FORGIVEN.
John 9:38 - And he said, LORD I BELIEVE. And he worshipped him.
The thief on the cross in Luke 23:42-43 BELIEVED and was personally told by Jesus that he will be with Jesus in PARADISE, meaning that the thief is SAVED and that all his sins are FORGIVEN.
Luke 23:42-43 - 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.”
Again, once a person BELIEVES on Christ, that person is ETERNALLY SAVED where the person's sins, past, present, and future are all FORGIVEN.
John 5:24, John 6:47 and John 3:18 refutes your errant belief as it clearly states that those who believe on Christ are SAVED AND POSSESS ETERNAL LIFE.
John 5:24 - “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me HAS ETERNAL LIFE AND WILL NOT BE JUDGED, BUT HAS CROSSED OVER FROM DEATH UNTO LIFE.

Eternal life and forgiveness of sin. You can't have one without the other...Revelation says not even 1 lie will enter heavens gates...so without Forgiveness there is no eternal life...and Eternal life is one of the Gift given at the moment of belief.

With respect...I think you are making much to do about nothing...you see both sides of this issue are correct...I want to point out that your examples of the wrong gospels are definitely wrong because they all had the person doing something to attain salvation and of course you and I both know that it is by grace that we are saved and that not of ourselves it is a Gift of God not of works lest anyone should boast Eph. 2:8-9...but you guys are so focused on the eternal life aspect of this that you are forgetting that Christ died for our sins...You are totally wrong about this...If it were true what you are saying we would not be able to enter in because if we do not confess all of our sins like you are saying all those forgiveness of sins verses supposedly say...We would not be good enough to enter into God's presence or to get eternal life. There is no guarantee when you are dying that you will remember all your sins to confess them to God and you most likely forgot most of the ones you have committed throughout your entire lifetime...So No Christ died for our sins and yes, He does give us Eternal life as a Gift along with the forgiveness of our sins...You see God is perfect and Holy without the remission of every single sin past present and future positionally speaking we would not be able to stand before Him. We are not believing in Eternal life we are not believing in forgiveness of sin...We are believing in Christ who is God and the Jewish Messiah who died to forgive us of our sins (past present and future positionally) once and for all, forever, and to give us eternal life as a Gift when we trust in Him Alone. All of this comes in one package you are taking it apart and confusing the body of Christ. Act 10:43 says... To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. this is the ONLY way a person is accepted by God totally Cleansed positionally of all His sins... notice after Peter said this the Holy Ghost fell on them Proving Total remission of sins is part of the salvation package...Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all of them which heard the word. The gospel is so simple...believe in Jesus Christ and you will be saved...but you are making it so legalistic and complicated...I agree it would be great if the person giving out the gospel could take the time to explain all the aspects of the salvation message, but it is enough for a person to realize they are a sinner otherwise you would be saying people will be going to Hell because they do not believe in eternal life...That doesn't make sense Eternal life is a part of the incredible transaction that takes place at the moment of belief, but it is not the only thing that happens. People will be thrown into the lake of fire because they did not believe Christ was the savior and that He did it all (complete forgiveness of all sin past present and future) and He gave us eternal life of course. You are correct I john is not speaking of salvation forgiveness of sin which is positional he is speaking of practical forgiveness of sin for fellowship not salvation there are 2 different type of forgiveness a person need salvation forgiveness and practical forgiveness...Thank you for discussing this important topic of what the gospel is and isn't but again...I think you are confusing matters much worse than you are helping...maybe you should say it would be better for the person giving out the gospel to include the Gift of eternal life along with the forgiveness of sin in their message rather than trying to split the two which are all in the same salvation package here is an article I love telling you all the things that happen when someone trust Christ alone as their savior...I hope you don't think we have to explain all of these to get a person saved as well lol...Just a joke sorry :)
    Born Again! What Happened?
The new birth is as real as the first birth. The Lord Jesus Christ said to Nicodemus, “that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (John 3:6).”
When a child is born into the world, a new life comes into existence. This life has a human nature, which is sinful. It is therefore subject to death. This is the birth that Jesus called “the flesh” and the result of that birth is flesh. This life cannot change its nature. It is as the grass that withers, and as a flower that falls away (I Peter 1:24). To be saved does not mean that this life which is born of the flesh is changed or made over. This cannot happen, for its nature cannot be changed. That is the condition that makes the new birth imperative. The only thing God can do with the flesh is to judge it, and judgment results in condemnation and execution (Romans 8:3, Galatians 2:19: Romans 6:6).
The new birth is a birth of the Spirit. It is to be “…born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:13).” Peter says, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever (I Peter 1:23).” This seed not only lives forever, but it has also been revealed that it remains in the one who is born of God (I John 3:9). Such a life must be eternal and that is what Jesus said it is (John 3:16). That life which is eternal cannot die. All who are born of incorruptible seed have an incorruptible nature and have eternal life. It is impossible for such to be lost, for that would mean the corruption of the divine nature and the death of that which cannot die. By the new birth, one who has already been born into the human race is born into the Spiritual realm, that is, the Kingdom of God. This is the only way to see or enter that realm (John 3:3,5).
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature (creation): old things are passed away; behold all things are become new (II Corinthians 5:17).” This verse speaks of the old conditions, which existed for the unsaved man, as passed away, and behold, all brand new conditions exist for the saved man - the one who is born again.
When the new birth takes place many irreversible things take place. The Bible states that the one who is born again has:
    1) Received everlasting life (John 3:16)
    2) Been born again (I John 5:1)
    3) Been born of incorruptible seed (I Peter 1:23)
    4) This incorruptible seed remaining in him (I John 3:9)
    5) Become a son of God (John 1:12)
    6) Become a new creation (II Corinthians 5:17)
    7) Been passed from death unto life (John 5:24)
    8) Been exempted from future condemnation (John 5:24)
    9) Been redeemed from under the law (Galatians 4:5)
    10) Been redeemed from the curse of the law (Galatians 4:5)
    11) Become dead to the law (Romans 7:4)
    12) Received an eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12)
    13) Been reconciled to God (II Corinthians 5:18)
    14) Peace with God (Romans 5:1)
    15) Been justified (Romans 5:1)
    16) All trespasses forgiven him (Colossians 2:13)
    17) Been delivered from the power of darkness (Colossians 1:13)
    18) Been translated into the kingdom of the Son of God (Colossians 1:13)
    19) Been perfected forever (Hebrews 10:14)
    20) His sins no more remembered (Hebrews 10:17)
    21) His sins removed as far as the East is from the West (Psalms 103:12)
    22) Been made complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10)
    23) Been accepted of God (Ephesians 1:6)
    24) Been born of the Spirit of God (John 3:6)
    25) Been baptized by the Spirit of God (I Corinthians 12:13)
    26) Been indwelt by the Spirit of God (I Corinthians 6:19-20)
    27) Been sealed with God's Spirit (Ephesians 1:13)
    28) Become the object of God's love (Ephesians 2:4)
    29) Become the object of God's grace (Romans 6:14)
    30) Become the object of God's power (Ephesians 1:19)
    31) Become the object of God's faithfulness (I Corinthians 1:9)
    32) Become a citizen of heaven (Ephesians 2:19, Philippians 3:20)
    33) Been seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6)
    34) Been already glorified (Romans 8:30)
    35) Been given a home in heaven (John 14:1-3)
    36) Been kept by the power of God (I Peter 1:5)
    37) Been crucified with Christ (Galatians (2:20)
    38) Been buried with Christ (Romans 6:4)
    39) Been resurrected with Christ (Ephesians 2:6)
All of the above plus many other things are true about one who has trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior and as a result become born-again.

    This is confusing...
I still don't understand why you say that believing on the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God (God in the flesh) for dying on the cross to pay for all of my sins (past, present & future sins), that He was buried and resurrected in the flesh 3 days later - believing on who He is & what He did ALONE for salvation that I cannot earn nor lose... that's not going to save me? I don't understand why you say that's not enough to be saved. I must believe on the Lord for specifically ETERNAL LIFE not the death, burial & resurrection of Christ? I still don't get it. He IS eternal life. He or she who believes on the Son, HAS eternal life. How is it not the same or enough? Aren't ee suppose to believe 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 to be saved? And eternal life is the result? I believe yes. I don't understand your position. Will you please explain further? Thank you.

Anyone who refuses to acknowledge and change their mind (repent) about their sinfulled life will not be forgiven, just as the thief if he wouldn't have admitted his sins, he would not have believed or been forgiven. If he would've only said Remember me he would not have been saved.
The other thief didn't admit he deserved to die he insulted Jesus, HE DID NOT FEAR GOD, he didn't admit his sins he said: If he is who he claims he is let him save himself and us.

Do you believe that Jesus is theSon of God died on the cross was buried and rose again for our sins?
If yes then everything Jesus preached on repenting of sin applies to Gentiles as well
    Luke 24:47
And REPENTANCE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS will be preached in His name to 👉ALL NATIONS 👈Starting in Jerusalem.
    Jesus said:
    Matthew 16:18
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Jesus again reaffirms Peter to start the church in John 21:17
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things: you know that I love you."
    “Feed my sheep.
When did Peter start the church?
Acts 2 is the day of pentecost.
How did Peter say the Jews as well as the Gentiles are to be saved?
    Acts 2:37-39
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles (Including John)Brothers, what shall we do?”
38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off. (meaning gentiles) for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
    Acts 3:19
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.
Note Peter said the same thing as Jesus We are to repent of sin for the forgiveness of sins, without forgiveness their is no Salvation.
Peter again makes it understood that this includes Gentiles.
    Acts 11:18
When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted REPENTANCE THAT LEADS TO LIFE.” Repentance leads to eternal life.
    Paul too preached repentance.
    Acts 17:30
In the past God overlooked such ignorance but now COMMANDETH ALL PEOPLE EVERY WHERE TO REPENT.
    Acts 20:21
I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they MUST TURN TO GOD IN REPENTANCE AND HAVE FAITH in our Lord Jesus.
Acts26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all
Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should REPENT AND TURN TO GOD and DEMONSTRATE THEIR REPENTANCE BY THEIR DEEDS. Paul says Repent and believe and show your repentance by your deeds or how you live.
    2 Corinthians 7:9-10
Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because YOUR SORROW LED YOU TO REPENTANCE. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 GODLY SORROW BRINGS brings
👉REPENTANCE THAT LEADS TO SALVATION 👈and leaves no regret, but WORLDLY SORROW BRINGS DEATH.
Jesus never said believe in Me for the forgiveness of sins.
Note Jesus tells Peter not John to feed His Sheep.
