I've been looking for videos like this these days, and there you are posting one that sums it up nicely, thanks! I've started Cuban salsa myself, first year beginner but highly motivated and with a good sense of rythm, yet I find myself in a connundrum. I chose Cuban salsa because the "ideas", the history (the fact that it's the roots of all salsa) and probably the moves as well as the human part of it attracted me more than slot/line/NY/... salsa, but I recently also discovered that my favourite salsa tracks... are mostly Puerto Rican or American! Probably because my first musical passion before anything else was and still is Afro-American music, from jazz to funk and soul. So they're supposed to be different music genres and not just different dances, yet I can't find a single video or text that explains thoroughly the difference! So my question is: could you explain the MUSICAL differences between "nations" in another video or something? And also: is it possible to dance "Cuban salsa" (casino or social) on non-Cuban salsa music? Whether it be Columbian, Puerto Rican, Venezuelian, etc.
This is an excellent suggestion will think about this… as for dancing cuban salsa on another style the short answer is nothing stopping u… i like to do salsa footwork on james brown tunes..as u go along learning … learn many styles if possible because ultimatly youll be able to switch styles at will…. when i hear cuban music i feel like dancing cuban salsa style … its like they fit together like a glove;)
1) Interesting French history derived name. 2) For explanation of salsa break steps on 1,2,3,4 se Hiw Many Saksa Timings Exist? 3) Yuo Tube videos suie a few other national styles of salsa-- Argentine, Peruvian, Mexican, etc, Seems like S American versiones iof Cuban salsa & Colombian cumbia use 4 1/8th notes 4 quicks, no holding of steps. Honestly its hard to say without seeing you…salsa is a big salad of many styles and influences…. Cubans dance on1 too and on2 ( but not the newyork on2) that said a discussion like this needs visuals;)
Also you dance on different beats. It's easier to pick up Cuban since you dance on the first beat while NY is on the second (or sixth depending on how you see it).
@@garreswe Most of the teachers here dance on both on1 and on2. We are heavily influenced by New York dancers/Teachers;) Our schools curriculum contains footwork that are from the main man Eddie Torres. Its not only about dancing on1 or on2 to differentiate styles im also referring to the origin of our stuff;)
There is even more variety. 1) In past, some did break steps on 3 or on 4! 2)Salsa break steps are on 1 or 2, steps are quick quick slow or 123-4 3) Son Cubano & Son Montuno dance steps are (4)!1 2-3 4 1 slow quick quick, break step is on 2-3. And then, a few people do these 2 + quick quick slow dance steps. As if those are not already too much!
Cuban style dancers are disliked on dance floors that danced new York style. Because they took up so much space and are generally oblivious to other dancers. Theyay bumped into them or stepped on their foots
Well, of course, Cuban salsa is more than dancing in circles - it's also about mastering the art of not stepping on your partner's toes while you're both trying to figure out which way is up!

No problem!
And depending on the dance partner skill level, it's possible to switch back and forth between the two styles.
Cuban style is much easier to lead a girl who doesn't know much salsa . LA style you can't fake
I like on1 better than on2. Does that mean I’m dancing NY style?

We actually have the new york style here in montreal but we all dance it on1;)
@@SalsaBailaProductions Then it's not NY style, it's LA style 🙂

Salsa + Bumper cars ;)
Haha i make the same expirience with linea dancers and i dance both styles. I think it depends to the people and Not to the dancing Style.
Cuban salsa is not just about dancing in circles. It is a more complex dance than linear salsa.
You have been misinformed!
