      Agreed. It’s good to see videos like this to see the tattooists like this lady that you want to avoid. Sounds rude and snotty. Asking how much for a sleeve is a Normal, reasonable question someone might ask, you can certainly give them a ballpark figure and show some styles that would cost the minimum and some that would cost more. My sons tattoo artist knew how long it would take to do his whole tattoo and said ‘it may go over time a bit but that’s what I would expect it to take me’.
      No one should be afraid to ask anyone for a price when buying something or employing someone’s services. The way this lady reacts isn’t how most people would react and if you find someone acts haughty, rude or annoyed at you asking things like how much it costs, find someone else as you can be sure that if you had any actual problems with their services, they’d be dealt with in the same rude way. Always Avoid people who are rude, dismissive and arrogant when you ask questions about products or services they offer. It’s a huge red flag that they don’t respect their customers and will be difficult to deal with regarding warranty or any other issue. This goes for any shop of course, not just a tattoo place.

      @@bloodsord9 ... That being said, if it is going to be permanently on someone's body, then their opinion definitely matters more. If a chef was cooking a meal for someone and that person would have to eat that meal every day, they definitely have more of a say on the seasoning than the chef does.

      It is pretty unprofessional not to tell somebody what something will cost. I have several tattoos from European Tattoo Artists and never didn't they tell me what to expect price wise. Of course there is always a range and for bigger stuff you get at least the approximate price for the day. How else should you know how much money to carry or even if you could afford it. Hello this will be 2 million please

      @@bloodsord9 No, but if I request that the chef cook me a steak and they send me fish, I'm not going to pay for that. Same with a tattoo. If I ask for something, that's what I want on my body. If you as the artist want to make suggestions, go ahead but you still need the clients approval.

    As a molecular biologist, I can tell you that you are not more likely to get an infection if you do or don't sleep with your pets. Bacteria is everywhere all over you and in the air always. It went fine, he came back the next day and I sorted it out. But take the healing process serious and don’t start cleaning your tattoo with antibacteriel soap during healing period, that’s beyond fucked up. Make sure you get info from your artists, since there’s so many different ways to heal a tattoo and the artists should know how to take care of their own work

    I love it when tattoo artists get annoyed with clients who are picky with their tattoos. It’s something that’s being put on your body forever is it really that crazy to make sure it’s to your liking first?

    • @johnjacob3160
      @johnjacob3160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I can understand why they get annoyed when people are picky. There’s a difference from asking for a couple changes and being picky. Some people are never satisfied with shit and act spoiled, and there’s a type that already has the attitude that will result in them finding something wrong after their tattoo is finished regardless of how many changes are made. When you get a tattoo, you should already be happy with the concept before its even on you. Seeing the personal taste and style the artist puts on it should be exciting because it makes it unique.

    • @notmyfullname909
      @notmyfullname909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I just assume that generally a sleeve is made up of several tattoos. Thus, you can’t get a price on a ‘sleeve’ because pieces are per tattoo, and amount of time and effort. Also the term sleeve doesn’t cover if it’s color, multiple sessions, etc. And like she said later, sleeves are not usually a single session.

      I think the biggest problem with kids in a tattoo studio is when they’re very young and the parents can’t/don’t watch and pay attention to them. There are so many things in a tattoo studio that kids shouldn’t be getting into or touching. This isn’t to say that all kids are bad, but it’s better to be safe than sorry and we wouldn’t want someones kids distracting other artists in the studio.

    In regards to "rule 16", I kind of do that. I find an artist I absolutely love all of their work, and let them make a design they want to tattoo. Sometimes I'll give a vague idea (example- a raccoon skull), but let them have 100% creative freedom to create a beautiful piece they're proud of. I don't just walk in to any random shop and say "I don't know what I want", but I find someone SPECIFIC and ask them for something THEY want to tattoo. I've done this 6-7 times now, and all my artists seem to really appreciate the creative freedom, and I've never gotten a design I haven't fallen completely in love with!

      Yeah 100% agree that you shouldn't just say "I don't know" or "What do you think I should get?". Those questions don't belong in a tattoo shop, UNLESS you have given them free range to do whatever they want. But then that's something else entirely. An artist will probably never tell you what to get, but if you ask them what they want to make that's something they probably agree to. ^^

    Thing with not bringing kids, some people are single parents and may not have any other family members to take care of their kids. My tattoo artist understands this as he is a single parent. So when my friend booked in with him she brought her son (who slept through the whole appointment) and he did not mind having her kid there as he understood.
    Tattoo artists have hearts too and some actually understand, not as fussy as this woman is.

    • @thedaemonicblackcat
      @thedaemonicblackcat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think in that case you should ask the tattoo artist ahead of time and then make sure your kids have stuff to keep them entertained. A. Lot of people in service industries have had to deal with nightmare children, and in the case of tattooing it can be very dangerous to have a kid unsupervised. It’s not so much about the kids as it is that parents don’t teach their kids how to act in public.

    • @CnithTheOnliestOne
      @CnithTheOnliestOne 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think it's about fussy. I think it's preference. Kids are wild beasts or charming mushrooms... Most kids can't behave for hours and hours, they get bored and will start to annoy everyone. Yes, even your perfect little prince or princess will annoy SOMEbody.
      Some people just don't like kids. The thing is ASK first, don't just show up to the appt with your kid and assume it's OK. If I was your artist you'd get a shit job because I couldn't concentrate on my work while your kid is messing things up or could mess things up. Unless you give your kid Nyquil or something and can guarantee they'll sleep for however many hours it takes to do your artwork.

    • @Alphacentauri819
      @Alphacentauri819 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don’t have anyone to take care of your kids…you have to say “no” to many things. That’s life. The real world. Being a parent:
      The liability of a child running around is too much. The potential distraction, having to end the session, too high. It is absolutely a tattoos artist right to have boundaries and state what is ok, or not, in their business.
      As a single parent, I don’t think I have a free pass. I say “no” to many things, in order to do my job and be responsible…AND conscientious of others.

    My artist had a dog in the shop too but it wasn’t a traditional shop, it was more like an apartment turned into a studio, with a tattoo room and a “living room / waiting room / design room”, which I really loved and made me feel super at ease, as did the dog (which I needed I was hella nervous). Of course the dog was not allowed in the tattooing room. She was adorable though and accidentally my tattoo kinda turned out to look like an abstract version of her 😂

    Re: hiring for a party, I had a friend who saw an article about someone having a tattoo artist at their wedding to tattoo guests and for a bit wanted to have that at her wedding. She got talked down from it, the wedding was at a brewery too so even if the venue allowed it like I feel like there's the possibility of drunk people getting tattoos or like people running around drunk with open wounds. But, despite that digression, it is a thing I guess for some people to want tattooers to tattoo at events.

      There is technically no legal age here in Utah to get tattooed. Your parent has to be there during the entire process, start to finish, and we collect photo ID/Birth Certificates of both parent and child and if the names don’t match then there has to be a guardianship paper. That keeps it so minors can’t come with someone who is old enough just to get tattooed. Many states have different rules.

    • @ShinRamii

    So, I have a few notes. At the tattoo shop I work for, we have a policy that clients only bring up to one guest into the work area, anyone else is limited to the waiting area. Also no children are allowed outside of the waiting area at the front of the shop. Also, it's one thing if someone doesn't know what they want, but we actually have a "free reign" option where our artists basically charge their daily rate and people just get whatever the artist wants to tattoo. More people take advantage of that than you would think and they usually walk out with really great work!

    • @Katrinberndt
      @Katrinberndt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great policies! And just like Linda said in her full-length video (not sure if I kept it in or not) of course there's a free range option and I'd gladly get a piece designed but the artist without my wishes in mind. BUT asking the tattoo artist "what should I get?" is still kinda stupid in my opinion. Either say they get free range or give some kind of guidelines. 😄

    • @xx_PCCR_xx
      @xx_PCCR_xx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with this.
      Mostly because I think people will probably get better tattoos when they reach a higher maturity level. Also, the older you are the more experiences you've lived, so probably you will get a tattoo with a deeper meaning that you will be proud of, probably for the rest of your life.
      I recently got my first tattoo (and I think it will be the only one)
      I was attracted to tattoos since I was 18 and got inked at the age of 31.
      I knew I wanted a tattoo, I knew where I wanted it, I just didn't know what design I wanted. But that came by itself with time and experiences I lived.
      I bet there are younger people that have a clear idea of what they want, are mature/experienced enough, to get a tattoo they will love and it will fit well.
      I wasn't ready for it when I was in my early 20s so I think it was wise to wait for the right moment.
      My tattoo artists also explained that the older you are, your skin cells grow a bit slower (but of course we are still aging and the tattoo will age with us). But the changes of your skin from 30yo to 40yo are a bit less drastic than from 20 to 30...
      I am not a dermatologist so I don't know if this is true though. Time will tell!

    Seriously? There are tattoo artists who get pissy when a customer asks them about the price of your service? What? I mean, I get what you're trying to say, it is not a fixed number, but be a little less condescending about it. I'm apparently really lucky with my tattoo artis. I asked about the money for a sleeve, we sat down, talked it through, and she named a price (with some leeway for change of course). She certainly didn't seem aghast about me daring to ask that question. I seriously don't understand how self-important some people are. Why don't you just print a list of things people can't ask you and fix it at the entrance at your shop, because, believe me, most people have no idea that those even exist. And how should they?

    I found that it gets to their head when an artist gets so picky and snob about customers. Ofc you want to avoid bad behaved and uncivilized clients but:
    I want an estimate price for a sleeve to know how much to put away. I can't take over a thousand from only one salary. Give me an estimate price give or take a few hundreds.

    • @animestrikercookies
      @animestrikercookies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason why asking "how much is a full sleeve" is a problem is because there's not enough detailed information to create an accurate amount. That's why you have sessions to figure out what you want and how detailed everything will be so they can figure out how much it would cost. Like the cost of a one color simplified line-art no shading no extra colors and with really big easy patterns would end up costing much less then a full sleeve with detailed shaded art covering the whole arm.
      It's not that it's so much rude to ask how much a tattoo would cost. It's that they literally cannot give you a price range with a simple question as that.

    • @gen5574
      @gen5574 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think she meant it for people who just ask how much for a sleeve without giving any specific details like style, colors or theme. I think a sleeve of colored realistic portraits would be pricier that a sleeve of b/w non realistic art.

    Always insightful to hear a tattoo artist’s take on these things. Few thoughts of my own: I sleep with my Labrador puppy and I had him when I got my arm sleeve worked on. I wore a hoodie to bed, the long sleeves protected my new tattoo work. Wash the tat before you go to bed, and again when you wake up. That worked for me. Common sense applies here. As far as the many comments on here remarking at tattoo artists “complaining” about picky customers, what you have to understand that a tattoo artist’s reputation is everything to them. It’s what keeps them I business and puts dinner on the table. Therefore, they are not willing to work on anything that may come out poorly, or would be, in their own mind, a bad reflection on them in some way. This means their are some styles and genres that individual artists avoid as a matter of policy. (Think of it like this: if it was your job and you enjoyed drawing comic strips, how would you feel if someone tried to strong arm you into water painting a modern art piece for them?) This means turning away potential business, which is never an easy thing to do. This inevitably means saying “no” to customers. Some of those customers are not always very polite. My advice for someone looking for a specific tattoo piece would be, ask if the artist can do it, and if the answer is no, simply move on. Don’t take it personal.

    I am guilty as well of letting my dog sleep with me in a bed while healing a tattoo, I do agree with what she is saying, but still Guilty :D also it is possible to do a ,,in a day” if its super minimalistic, even random flowy lines going all over the arm maybe considered a sleeve. Luckily we have an age limit where I live, it is 16, when a parents comes with them to fill out paperwork, but me personally do not tattoo anyone who is younger than 18 years old. Once you don’t need a parent to come with you then you can get tattooed. I am guilty as well of getting a super tiny lettering tattoo, it was my first tattoo before I knew anything about tattooing and the ,,artist” I went to didn’t know shit what she was doing, luckily enough it was so poorly done it was very easy to cover it up with a large piece. But it is quite common for people to bring pictures from Pinterest of a photoshopped lettering ,,tattoo” as a reference without knowing the outcome of getting a super small tattoo that involves letters. I could write a separate comment about kids in the studio. Also we are a dog friendly studio however they are only allowed in the reception room completely separate from any workplaces.

    The thing about asking the tattoo artist about what they think about a tattoo, is actually for the best sometimes, I thinj. If for example you have two choices of the design and you don’t know which of them would look best, you can talk to your artist and hear their perspectives. Or if you don’t know where to put the tattoo according to how it would look on the body when it moves and where it would look the most flattering...
    I always ask my artist about this and she has always chosen the best spots on my body for the tattoo - both according to my body, movement and other tattoos.

    I hate ABSOLUTELY HATE shaming people for asking about pricing im obviously asking because i need to budget for your art not because im expecting a discount or to heckle you on the price especially a sleeve ive never asked for a price on my tattoos or even an estimate i get it dont they say the price i fork it over but as an artist of many mediums including tattooing i think this whole shaming thing really REALLY needs to stop

    with when the person is asking an artist what they think the tattoo artist should do... its a compliment to the artists knowledge usually for them asking you what you think. especially seeing as often people get several tattoos in one area and then would like to fill the gaps.... as an artist you need to be willing to lend your imagination to your client to make business. If you cant lend your imagination then how do you expect to gain regular clientele and do anything different with your artwork. i really enjoy being asked this because it means that i can get my own work out there and onto some ones skin whom wants the design.
    There is no limit as to whether a design comes into the shop or is produced in the shop. The only limit is some ones imagination and personal preferences, the size of the needles and the surface area of the clienteles skin. (Texture , depth etc...) maybe materials available but thats around abouts it.
    It was an interesting video to watch the first time because i have a few tolerances myself, but the main thing to remember is it is up to the tattoo artist to give the after care information because often some advice is tailored to that tattoo artists work ethic and style.
    ****No one is allowed to use bedpanthen on tattooes anymore, the content of lanilol in the nappy rash cream, burns the skin and makes the ink fade and fall out.... so just a quick not to anyone still using it. Bedpanthen have told tattoo artists to stop because its not for tattoos +hashtag free information***

    The only real thing I’ve done or even thought of doing is not listening to the artist for aftercare or buying any sort of healing ointments, because I have a condition that causes allergic reactions to anything at any time, so I’ve learned the best way to heal my skin on my own without causing unnecessary or impromptu allergic reactions

    I was a kid in a tattoo shop, but I'm admittedly an outlier. I was like 12 with my mom getting a tattoo. The artist let me sit in one of the unoccupied chairs and I read a book and occasionally asked questions for a few hours.

    I agree with you that you should always listen to the artist about aftercare, but unfortunately some people just don't tell you. I have 4 tattoos. One artist casually said "Just put aloe gel on it" and the others told me to just do what I normally do. That's partially on me for not asking them to be more specific, but I wish they wouldn't assume that I already know everything.

    When I was getting my latest tattoo (a little over a week ago) there was a guy getting something done and as it got later his family came to see him. The shop was super cool about it. When I asked my artist about it he was like "yeah we don't allow kids to hang out in here but we all got family, we can be understanding." It was cool. They were in there about ten minutes, hugged their dad and left. It was fun listening to them comment on the tattoos and ask about the equipment and stuff.

    So, I have my right arm "almost" a complete sleeve and my left forearm started for a sleeve. I understand the dog in bed point because yes it is potentially possible to get an infection.
    I also understand people that don't like kids and I treat that like the concept of different car models or manufacturers. We're all different and if everyone did the same, got the same thing or believed the same way it would be boring "af"!
    Skin care is what the artist suggests and trust me they are not going to want to rework it if the ink falls out. Most artists get business from word of mouth. Not good business if there's a bunch of people saying that this is what they were told by this artist and this is the outcome.
    Copying a tattoo is just like copying someone else's school report or whatever. Call it if you want a form of plagiarism! My left inner forearm is an example of what I found on the internet of what I wanted, I sent it to my artist and he created something similar but completely different than the original piece.
    Here's a novel concept, look at the drawing before they put needle to skin! What?! I know shear genius! It gives them the opportunity to tweak the drawing a little bit before they ink you. And don't try changing it a bunch the day of getting work done! That's just rude and inconsiderate!
    As with believing everything that they say... well... I will say that I believe most of what they say. Let's just say plastic food wrap is a breeding ground for bacteria right next to your open wound/cut/ink or whatever you want to reference it as.
    My suggestion for pet owners, people that have "bed partners", or just don't want their bed to get covered by blood and ink... ready? Compression/ workout clothes... it's thin, doesn't move or rub a bunch and keeps it covered up but allows it to breathe! Thank you for this and I actually am getting a cover up as well! Peace out! ✌🏻

    The point on don’t ask what a sleeve will cost is because a sleeve is usually done in multiple sessions consisting of multiple different designs usually and then fill ups. An artist can give an estimate based on a design and size, but an entire sleeve would be multiples with different sizes and shit, thats a lot of variables 😅 The point wasn’t to ask prices in general, but to ask prices of something so variable as a sleeve.

    Yes I went into a tattoo shop and asked for an owl. I had shown him some ideas and he said straight up that I would not like it that way. He asked me questions to get an idea of style. So he said he will draw something up for me right there and see if I'll like it. Well it was very nice. It was a water color. I am getting another in 2 weeks of a rose. I was talking to my Mom and she suggested I get it a little different. Considering I am sure he is always doing plain roses and probably. So instead I am getting a climbing rose bracelet on my wrist. I am so excited 😍. Next is my dog does sleep in my bed. But I keep her very clean and I my environment very clean. It's not like I let her roll on me when I have a new one. My last tattoo healed really good.

      Honestly saying tattoo artists don't care what you get. That's not completely true. The one I had was so good to me. He asked me questions about what things I like and my personality and he matched my tattoo. I am a very bubbly person and the tattoo shows my bright personality with every color he could fit. And he was very informative about the after care. My tip is going into a tattoo shop and when you can speak to the tattoo artist then ask about the after care. If he seems very informative about it then that's a good person to work with.

    I feel the copying thing. as an artist who just draws in different medias, copying something is hard, and not always a nice thing to do if youre copying another artists work. i can only imagine how much it sucks to copy with a tattoo because there is no erasing, at least with lineart you can make it look intentional or cover it up, cant cover up something on skin that well.
