    SR model is definitely the best value. You can always upgrade things later. I think some of the higher end Tacoma's are over-priced. I would go for the 4x4 SR.

    I still remember my first pickup, a 1979 Toyota SR5 pickup. Loaded with every option (which was only A/C since the SR5 came with everything) it was $6053. It had 100 HP (20R), weighed 2350 lbs, and was rated to carry 1500 lbs. Those 20/22R motors were bullet-proof as well. A true "mini" truck. By today's standards, it was cramped and crude, but those were simpler times that I miss.

    • @aaronbays4
      @aaronbays4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's $22,462 in today's money. You could get a more basic truck back then for a good bit less. The reason mini-trucks back then were so popular was the price, they were priced cheaper than a basic Corolla, Civic, Cavalier, Escort etc. And at least for the Japanese ones, they ran and ran and ran and ran and ran while getting 25-30mpg. I still see 1980's Toyota pickups being daily driven in my neck of the woods.

    • @fredzeppelin3969
      @fredzeppelin3969 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronbays4 remember that one reason they were as cheap as they were, was Toyota was side-stepping the "chicken tax" (25% tarriff on imported pickups) by building the beds in Fremont CA, then shipping the cab/chassis here, technically not a pickup, and bolting on the bed. Not sure if that Fremont plant later became the NUMMI plant were the Geo Prisms (nee Corolla) were built.

    I think the best value is probably the 2nd gen Tacoma SR5. Has most of what you need. Still pretty pricey for a used vehicle, however good deals are still out there! I really think that the 2nd gen Tacomas was when the classic/basic philosophy of trucks ended. Sort of wish the industry would bring back a truly basic truck for a good price. The 2005-2015 Tacoma access cabs are great when you set realistic expectations.

    Just an FYI - if you use the configurator on Toyota.com, and you put in your location zip code, it will limit options available (like color, powertrain combo, packages, body style) based on what Toyota and their regional distributor are allocating or building at the time headed for that region (or whatever the term is). So you may not see one color or one engine / transmission / drivetrain combo one day, but the next month, you may see the combo you want in the config. I learned it the hard way pulling my hair out why I can't get the configurator to show me the exact config I wanted.

    I'm not all that impressed with the base 2.7 2TR-FE engine in the Tacoma. Same engine they've used since 2005. The 1st gen Tacoma used a different 2.7 4 cylinder that made about 10 less hp and similar torque, which was adequate in the much smaller 1st gen trucks, they weighed a lot less and were a lot more peppy with the usual 5 speed manual those trucks came with.
    The 2.7 in the larger(espeically crew cab) 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma just doesn't cut the mustard IMO, especially since they're much bigger/heavier trucks. Also you can't get the 2.7 with a manual, the automatic feels like a dog pared with this somewhat revvy small engine. You also saw that window sticker, the 2.7 is a wash with the 3.5 V6 in terms of fuel economy.
    Also $25,000 is a huge ask for the base truck. Been driving dad's old 2004 Tacoma that I inherited, its a BASE reg cab/2wd/5 speed/4 cylinder, he said he paid $12,000 for it in 2004. Last year for the small Tacoma, adjusted for inflation that is $16,500 or so. Toyota has gone way up on the price of the Tacoma, granted the new one is extended cab, sits higher and has a few more creature comforts like reclining bucket seats, power windows, locks and a "screen" for the radio($150 aftermarket radio in the 2004 has bluetooth and does all the same crap as the 2019's touch screen).

I have no trouble with the 2.7 it's the smoothest quietest engine I've ever owned and enough power for me I love that VVT growl. The cruise control through the Toyota TSS system is awesome. My only complaint is I live in Michigan we get lots of rain and it does not have delay wipers. The only upgrade I'm going to do is tint Windows and the sound system is a little weak.

In my opinion the 2.7 will outlast the Atkinson v6. Also there is a video on TH-cam where both previous v6 models smoke the new Atkinson motor in the quarter mile! I don’t believe the current v6 puts out 278hp. At least not at the tires..

      Per calculated US dollar inflation rates between 2000 and 2018.....$20,000 in 2000 is equal to $29,164.58 in 2018. So your argument is invalid and is simply an old person bitching about price increases without an understanding of how inflation works. Not to mention with modern lane keep and blind spot merge sensors, adaptive cruise control, self parking models.....you get more technology than you ever could have dreamed for in your 2000 truck, it damn near drives itself and with inflation the price hasnt actually shot up at all.
