'The Singing Nurse' at Valencia hospital soothes the suffering

Patients who heard him as he walked the halls belting out old love songs and Broadway hits started to request he sing to them. Soon, serenading the sick became part of his daily rounds, gaining him the moniker "The Singing Nurse."
My mom dedicated her life to being a RN in a nursing home facility. It takes a very special calling to work with the elderly. She would sing to her patients, talk to them about God, and pray with them if that's what they wanted. She would crotchet lap blankets for those in wheel chairs, and use her own money to buy them things if they had no family. I have not seen many like her but when you do find them, they are a blessing. Thank you to this man, for the comfort him brings.

As a 60 yo retired nurse, I can't thank you enough Jared for taking this time. I had a night nurse last week who sat with me and listened to my concerns, asked if she could pray with me. This is the nursing I was taught. I was actually criticized by management for offering back or hand massage to patients, but I was never idol, nor neglecting another. Patients would ask to have me back again, and the others were upset.
It is rare in these times to hear of someone who uses their gifts for the good of others. Thank you so much Jared for being such a truly gentle and caring person. If G-d forbid my mother were to need to go into a nursing home, I would hope that there would be staff there like you. Thank you.
I thank God this wonderful man AND his administrator allow him to use his time to sing. Staff has less and less time allotted to PAUSE and let patients KNOW they really care. I cried here. LOVELY.

I cared for an old lady with dementia on my ward once, not too badly out of it but permanently bed bound. She loved to sing in the morning. My favourite part of the day was when we washed her in the morning and the two of us would sing (poorly on my part) our hearts out. This guy is cool.

I have been in the hospital twice in my life and the nurses were all great and amazing people...this guy is awesome.

@Debbie, I didn't specifically mean only by singing. Just compassion in some way like this.
My daughter woks in a senior's nursing home and granted most of the nurses are great but there are some who don't care also. Just saying it would be great if they all were as compassionate as this young man. Taking care of elderly is one thing but to go beyond the call as he did is super amazing. I have great respect for anyone who can be in this kind of environment day after day, getting attached to someone and still giving your heart, knowing it will be broken in just a matter of time. All I'm saying is this is a very special young man.
i my self a 28 year old man was working at a senior's nursing home for 10 years as a chef and i took the time to visit and talk with the residents, tho i don't have a singing voice it was just that i took the time to visit ,talk to and even get some great recipes for them to make for them that made there day, in 10 years i lost so many i called friends it breaks my heart just thinking of it but i wouldn't change one day because i no what it meant to them and what it has made me in the long run . god bless all that take the time to care for our elderly ...

This guy is a great example of what healthcare should be like. Some people think they need that neutral bitch face to look professional. This is the reason why I think teaching therapeutic communication is pointless, people are either naturally kind and other generate that fake text book care. Hope this man keeps doing his thing.

What he is doing is fantastic, but that's /him/ doing it, not God. God didn't make him sing, he did it on his own.

Like when lifeguard saves someone, people be like "thank God", it wasn't God who saved saved the person, the lifeguard did.
Or when a doctor does a surgery, no let's not thank the doctor, let's thank God instead, because clearly it was God who did the work.

You are right that is him doing it BUT we are but tools for Gods use. This is a prime example of Gods hands. People are attributing this to God because this is God working through him. I am a nurse at Riley’s Hosp for children and let me tell you I see God working through many people daily.

Seemed a bit inappropriate of him to have an elderly patient kiss him on the cheek like that.....creepy.
First sorry for the bad grammar. English wasnt my best school subject^^ No it is not. Many older people can talk bad, move or caused by disease (dementia as an example) to express positive feelings badly. A kiss like this is not necessarily associated with love. It's just an easy method for these people to show their positive feelings. For nurses, it is a method to reduce the gap between them and the patient. If the patient makes from his side. Would a nurse provide the impetus, it would be more than just a slight violation of several laws. But as seen here in the video, it is not objectionable.(Dont know if objectionable is right: reprehensible would fit better i think :D)
IksEnwie The thing is, there is a fine line between elder acre and elder abuse in some cases. Being a male nurse he should know better, and while it may be a sing of affection to him or some seeing his actions, to other it may not come across that way. In fact it may not be an innocent act. By doing it, he opens himself up for question; best just not to lean in for a kiss from elderly (dying) woman to remove the possibility of doubt.

Just the way he holds her hand and sings to her, he cares. That means everything to someone lying in a bed in pain. Top man! Just wish this could happen everywhere. Especially for the older generation, who need that extra bit of TLC.

That's good that he works in a place that allows him the time to do that. I've experienced a number of hospitals in my life, and in every one of them the staff are so rushed off their feet they hardly have the time to do the absolutely essential things like sticking their head in the door to see if you're all right, or even go for a pee they've wanting for half a day.
So a simple 'thank you' for you nurses won't hurt, right? :)

I so agree, it take someone with a loving heart and the the love of God to take time and make others feel like they are somebody...I love that there are people like this nurse who goes all out to comfort those who are sick and in pain. That is what God wants us to do...

Aww. What a great guy! It's too bad all nurses don't go the extra mile ... not necessarily singing, but treating their patients like more than a name on a wristband. Most are great, but there are some whose bedside manner is terrible.

Jared Axen is "The Singing Nurse".. He's a registered nurse, who uses song to connect with his patients and help soothe them. I think that this talented, dedicated and sympathetic man deserves that everyone knows his name.
People like this make me feel like I am wasting my life doing what I am doing

this touches my heart so much, just beautiful! God bless this nurse, He is just fabulous. I absolutely love nursing, and love working with the senior population. They are truly the greatest generation. My only regret is that I didn't make the career change sooner in my life. If anyone out there is considering a career change, and you feel it would be a good fit for you, I strongly recommend and encourage you to 'just do it'! There are so many people who need your love and care, and your life and heart will be touched and blessed every day in so many ways. Beautiful video! Love this.
How beautiful - during an 8 month hospital stay where I was unable to move one of the male nurses used to sing to me - he was in the choir at St Peters Church in East Melbourne, Australia and had the most beautiful voice. This young man seems just like him - a truly compassionate, caring individual.

My cousin's daughter calmed my mom with a song when she was in hospice and near her end. I love this man's heart and hope his good karma follows him.
