DFW is such a mess - granted, road signage is horrible in Texas in general compared to a lot of places, but that place takes it to another level. My home airport is MSP but we lived in Plano for a few years in the 80s so I knew DFW from back then while dropping off or picking up dad on business trips. I had loved those bridges where the planes go over the road - neat stuff, but of course I was a kid passenger then, so hadn't noticed how nasty all of the roads were. Then a few decades ago I went down to Fort Worth a number of times over a several month period while getting a factory up and running - that first time leaving the rental car center at DFW was my very first time as a driver in Texas, and what a rude awakening it was, especially in a rental... lol The other thing I noticed when down there that I hadn't noticed as much as a kid - those roads all around but especially in the suburbs are super narrow, even the old neighborhood, where the McMansions' rooflines were almost touching. It was surreal. They really do build right up to the property line down there. :P The factory I was setting up was at Railhead, so I drove past Alliance airport every day - those roads were mostly nice wide farm-to-market (preferred industrial roads used a LOT by semi trucks etc for those not familiar with them) roads, so no issues there. :P

@@Peyethon, I beg to differ, depending on your travel plans. If you are actually going to Dallas, then fly to Dallas (DAL), not stranded in the wilderness of Grapevine (DFW). If you should have a long layover at Love (DAL), it's easy to hop a cab , Uber or bus to a real, non-airport restaurant.
I miss DFW area, Both airports and my college University of North Texas in Denton. DFW airport has dedicated Plane spotting/ watching area called Founders Plaza outside of airport
Hi there! I am a huge fan of these comparison videos! As an LA native I would be so interested in a comparison of LAX, BUR and ONT as those are the three main passenger airports officially. If you feel so inclined (assuming you take on this project) SNA or LGB are also large airports in the area. I would be hella down for a 5 airport mega-special
As a former SWA employee, my heart is at Love for obvious reasons. Historic note: Love Field was where AF1 arrived with JFK the day he was assassinated and where LBJ took his Oath of office with Mrs. Kennedy standing alongside. It's curious the city leaders of Ft. Worth weren't more vocal about naming the airport Ft. Worth-Dallas International, potentially making its IATA code FWD, pronounced "Forward" instead of clunkily stating each letter.
Is it really that hard for you to say three letters and the same letters the Metroplex has been called for decades? And since the airport is in the middle it makes sense to go with the common nickname.
The Ft. Worth city leaders were very vocal about the name. Dallas and Ft. Worth city leaders had feuded for decades. Amon Carter, the Ft. Worth newspaper publisher and TV station owner, disliked Dallas so much that he always took a brown bag lunch to Dallas business meetings because he did not want to drop "one thin dime" into the Dallas economy. Ft. Worth wanted FWD, but the FAA stated that although most of the airport is in Tarrant County, Dallas was better known to the flying public and so DFW it had to be.
You could compare Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) vs. San Antonio International (SAT). At the southern tip of Texas, the Rio Grande Valley boasts three airports: Brownsville-South Padre Island International (BRO), Valley International in Harlingen (HRL), and McAllen Miller International (MFE).
Public transit sucks for both airports. I took the DART rail from DFW last time I flew in. It's a good five minute walk (in the Texas sun) north of Terminal A, which itself takes 15 minutes to traverse. The signs in Terminal A are not clear at all, and I had to ask an employee how to get to the platforms. And I'm sure it's even a bigger hassle coming from another terminal. As for Love Field, they didn't want to spend the money to actually connect the rail to the airport, so you need a shuttle bus from a nearby station.
I'm older (I think). I remember in the pre-DFW/pre-IAH days taking a flight from Houston Hobby to Denver, with intermediate stops at both Love and Greater Southwest.
Flown in and out of both Love and DFW over 50 times each. Would much rather fly out of or pick people up from Love, but DFW is where you have to go for international. Still enjoy both airports for what they offer.
I love these airport comparison videos... you should do one for the Boston area. Granted, they're spread out much more. Besides Logan International, there's Manchester, in Manchester, NH; Bradley Field in Windsor Locks, CT; and Portland Internattional Jetport in Portland, ME. Plus Pease AFB in NH and Hanscom AFB in MA also take some commercial flights.
Of the two, I much prefer Love Field. It's easier to get to from where I live, and it's just smaller and nicer. It doesn't feel like a big city airport even though it's just a few miles from downtown Dallas. I also happen to live under the northern approach paths to both airports, and I can always tell which plane is going where simply by determining its direction relative to the road grid. I've impressed a few people by doing that.
I don't fly often, but when I do, I go American, so I've been through DFW a couple times. The most recent time was in June 2018 when I flew out to BUR from EWR with a layover at DFW.
You should compare the South Florida airports: Palm Beach International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport
Try doing this comparison EWR JFK and LGA NY/NJ metro region for Boston Massachusetts area including Providence Rhode Island comparison is Logan Airport versus Theodore Francis green Airport. One of them opened in 1974 DFW DAL 1920s.
To be more specific about DFW Int'l Airport, it's on the northern county line of Dallas and Tarrant Counties and is shared by Grapevine, Irving, and you forgot to mention Euless, another Forth Worth suburb in Tarrant County. Also, DFW is one of some world class/mega airports in the world made and operational since the Cold War. Others are NRT (Tokyo Narita), CDG (Paris), CGK (Jakarta), IAH (Houston), IAD (Washington Dulles), and JFK (New York City), just to name some.
How about a comparison between Houston's TWO international airports, Intercontinental (IAH) & Hobby International (HOU) --- and toss in Spaceport Houston (EFD), ALL THREE of which are actually INSIDE the city limits of Houston?
Love was supposed to close for commercial traffic at the same time Fort Worth Meacham Field did as part of the agreement between Dallas and Fort Worth to jointly build DFW. The Wright Amendment came about because Dallas was not honoring their side of the agreement. Love operated as a private airfield until Herb made a deal with the city. Fort Worth has since opened Alliance, a huge commercial cargo airport. Meanwhile, it's still impossible to get to Love because they can't widen Mockingbird. Add the fact that planes can't approach or depart to the west of Love because of the DFW ATC and suddenly planes are having to head towards downtown before banking. Love really shouldn't be commercial.. it's too small and the city has grown up too much around it.
Here, let me fix some of this for you. Love was supposed to be close around the time Greater Southwest (not Meacham) when DFW opened, and all the airlines at the time agreed to move to DFW. Southwest, not being signatory and planning to only fly intrastate routes, was able to stay at Love Field following court victories. The Wright Amendment only came on the heels of airline deregulation as Southwest then wanted to fly outside of Texas from Love. Also, I've never seen planes banking to avoid downtown. Love is fine as it is now with the Wright Amendment restrictions gone. And saying it's impossible to get to Love is an exaggeration. The DFW Area can now support at least both airports. Southwest is reportedly discussing eventually taking gates at DFW, perhaps when Terminal F is built. McKinney was toying with the idea of improving their airport to attract commercial service, but voters in the city killed a bond issue last year to build a new terminal.
Fun fact: when DFW Airport opened in 1974, every airline at Love Field and Greater Southwest had contractually agreed to move to DFW Airport. Southwest is the only person who didn’t sign off of this agreement and decided to stay at Love Field citing the use of intrastate air travel. Another fun fact: if Southwest wants to expand to any airport in North Texas, Southwest will lose one gate at Love Field. If Southwest wants to expand to DFW Airport rn, they would go from operating 18 gates to 17 gates. This agreement ends in 2025.
In 2002, you could still see the end of Greater Southwest's Runway on Google maps. And YES, American Airlines HQ is exactly where the old airport used to be.
The North end of GSW's runway and part of the taxiway are still there, when u exit DFW's south entry and head to FtW on 183 u can look right and see it. BTW, the plan with GSW was to build an airport between Dallas and Ft Worth, but the terminal building was one half mile closer to Ft Worth than Dallas,so Dallas refused to participate.
AA HQ is actually across from where GSW was. GSW was on the East side of 360...AAHQ is on the West side. The old runway is Amon Carter Blvd...and if you follow it to 183/Airport Frwy, you will see the end of the runway still there.
I live in outside Dallas and fly out of both regularly. DFW is really like 5 little airports in one spot. Of all the major airports I've been to, it's overall design is the best. The only time I feel like DFW is a pain is when I'm picking up someone at Terminal C where international flights come in. C is the worst of the 5 for traffic, still not as bad so many other major airports. I hate air travel but for a place as large as this, Love and DFW have spoiled me.
I would compare the three international airports in South Carolina. Charleston international, Greenville-Spartanburg international and Myrtle Beach international.
It won’t get canceled it’s just placed on Hood until flights get back to its same level. DFW airport is growing by passsneger numbers they’ll have to add another terminal eventually.
There are numerous airports around the world with a long, long runway. Miami and Denver come to mind. But no airport has 4 massive runways, like DFW. DFW could land 4 or 5 a380s at the same time easily.
Fun fact: after the delta crash made dfw airport to place a small park with a radar an a plane to wash, a few years later they modified it to include a tent with 9/11 stuff this was not a shocker because a American airlines flight was one of the planes to crash thats why theres so many 9/11 parks in dfw these days the park is known for plane spotters i go there because its a nice place to see while eating Bojangles.
What’s the issue with different gates or terminals? Park at a lot outside the grounds or take skylink to get to your departure and car. Or Uber or Lyft or alto there and back or get a friend etc. Not really as difficult as you think.
Well you have now identified yourself clearly, old and white guy who loves donald. Poor you has to be catered to and can’t get on a shuttle that’s free.

@@northtexasfan but, as I've asked before, who the hell flies out of Terminal E? If it was in A or B where American flies most of its planes out of then I'd still think DFW sucks but for different reasons.
I live in Fort Worth and wish they would expand meacham airport. They been talking about having commercial flights for the last 10 years and nothing ever happens. Fort Worth is a beast on its own with 1 million people. So I don’t get why we share an airport with Dallas. Makes no sense to go on like this.
It will never happen. American Airlines is one of the largest employers based in FT Worth. Their hub is at DFW airport. AA has too much invested in DFW airport. If Meacham were to ever open to commercial traffic American Airlines would probably move to Dallas.
4:35 that picture makes no sense. Considering it’s full of American Airline planes, that’s supposed to be DFW airport. But the downtown skyline is definitely not that close. You can barely even see downtown from Irving/Grapevine
That picture is actually very accurate depending on which runaway and terminal you are landing or taking off from. I was on a flight from DFW to San Diego and we had an amazing view of the Dallas skyline when leaving for takeoff. Its even better at night. My flight was leaving out of one runaways of the far north east side of DFW airport. From that side of the airport grounds (almost parallel with Irving) you had a fantastic view of the iconic Dallas skyline.
ON THE PLAN IN 1996 ON EVE OF XMAS A LADY ON THE PLANE SHOWED ME IDEAL STOP ON DALLAS FOOT BALL BUILDING AND OTHER STUFF BUILDING IN DALLAS AS WE WAIT TO LANDED IN DALLAS AIRPORT.
people talk. so i'm gonna say this. love field staying open after DFW opened had nothing to do with the aviation industry. and yeah, all the aviation people just lost their shit reading that sentence. part of the agreement of opening DFW with the FAA was that love in dallas and GSW in ft. worth would close to commercial traffic. now give me just a little more rope here. the reason love did not close was due to somone's son standing up someone's daughter as a escort to a debutante' ball. someone blackballed someone from joining a country club. someone committed intercourse maximus on someone's real estate deal with the land agreement that was to become DFW. something happened somewhere. and considering the egos in texas and dallas specifically, think "what would JR do?" if you don't know who JR is i don't want to talk to you. think jerry jones on steroids. those are the types of egos we're dealing with in dallas. and that is why dallas pulled out of the deal and kept love open. i put this premise together listening to people in the oilfield talk. and as we all know, there isn't very much oil or gas in texas.............
Interesting video - thanks. The Wright Amendment and Perimeter Rule (DCA) point out everything wrong with the US - Congress picking winners and losers in commercial aviation. I am glad DFW exists, but also grateful that this airport design hasn't been replicated - its a terrible design. The pod design may have worked for a commuter airport, but it is terrible as a hub.

@@VahidMusictxthank you! I know most of the airport is in Tarrant County. I am so old I am still one of the people who gets hacked off about the airport being called Dallas by most 🤣🤣🤣
Fort Worth has two airports Meacham International in Fort Worth and then and Denton county Alliance airport which is in Fort Worth which is an all cargo airport
Great video. Probably won’t be flying to Dallas anytime soon but I’ll keep this in mind if I do!
Fly into DFW, it’s an easier airport for everyone and a great place to have a long layover
When GSW opened in the early 1950s, it was called The Greater Fort Worth International Airport / Amon Carter Field
I miss DFW area, Both airports and my college University of North Texas in Denton.
DFW airport has dedicated Plane spotting/ watching area called Founders Plaza outside of airport
Go Mean Green!
Thanks I have heard of Love Field but did not know anything about it, greetings from Australia
I'm old. I remember when there was no DFW, only Love Field.
I'm older (I think). I remember in the pre-DFW/pre-IAH days taking a flight from Houston Hobby to Denver, with intermediate stops at both Love and Greater Southwest.
Really, no shout out to Braniff
Flown in and out of both Love and DFW over 50 times each. Would much rather fly out of or pick people up from Love, but DFW is where you have to go for international. Still enjoy both airports for what they offer.
I love these airport comparison videos... you should do one for the Boston area. Granted, they're spread out much more. Besides Logan International, there's Manchester, in Manchester, NH; Bradley Field in Windsor Locks, CT; and Portland Internattional Jetport in Portland, ME. Plus Pease AFB in NH and Hanscom AFB in MA also take some commercial flights.
Green too
The last airport that JFK visited before his death was Love Field
Of the two, I much prefer Love Field. It's easier to get to from where I live, and it's just smaller and nicer. It doesn't feel like a big city airport even though it's just a few miles from downtown Dallas. I also happen to live under the northern approach paths to both airports, and I can always tell which plane is going where simply by determining its direction relative to the road grid. I've impressed a few people by doing that.
I don't fly often, but when I do, I go American, so I've been through DFW a couple times. The most recent time was in June 2018 when I flew out to BUR from EWR with a layover at DFW.
GREAT VIDEO! I loved the DFW topic..
could you compare the 5 Los angeles area airports? LAX, LGB, BUR, ONT, SNA
My first memories of Love Field was seeing those large planes traveling over overpasses
All the overpasses are at DFW. Love Field is so compact that it needs no overpasses.
You should compare the South Florida airports: Palm Beach International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport
I normally fly southwest, so I definitely prefer Love Field airport! DFW, too big, too much traffic, easy to get lost in
Boomer
As a Dallas resident, I much recommend love field over DFW if you’re flying domestically. It feels so much nicer and more efficient
Try doing this comparison EWR JFK and LGA NY/NJ metro region for Boston Massachusetts area including Providence Rhode Island comparison is Logan Airport versus Theodore Francis green Airport. One of them opened in 1974 DFW DAL 1920s.
Funny enough that T.F. Green is not in Providence, but in Warwick, RI.
Home city (well home metro) representation
To be more specific about DFW Int'l Airport, it's on the northern county line of Dallas and Tarrant Counties and is shared by Grapevine, Irving, and you forgot to mention Euless, another Forth Worth suburb in Tarrant County. Also, DFW is one of some world class/mega airports in the world made and operational since the Cold War. Others are NRT (Tokyo Narita), CDG (Paris), CGK (Jakarta), IAH (Houston), IAD (Washington Dulles), and JFK (New York City), just to name some.
Great video! I would love to see Orlando MCO v. Orlando Sanford SFB
How about a comparison between Houston's TWO international airports, Intercontinental (IAH) & Hobby International (HOU) --- and toss in Spaceport Houston (EFD), ALL THREE of which are actually INSIDE the city limits of Houston?
Looking forward to your future IAH vs HOU video
This is true. Dallas did some sucker shit by not keeping their promise.
Good video @americanswan
Fort Worth has Meacham and Alliance Airports
I like Love field easy to get it and out DFW is to big and I get lost a lot
I live in outside Dallas and fly out of both regularly. DFW is really like 5 little airports in one spot. Of all the major airports I've been to, it's overall design is the best. The only time I feel like DFW is a pain is when I'm picking up someone at Terminal C where international flights come in. C is the worst of the 5 for traffic, still not as bad so many other major airports. I hate air travel but for a place as large as this, Love and DFW have spoiled me.
Milan Malpensa vs Milan Linate and Milan Bergamo airport please :)
I would compare the three international airports in South Carolina. Charleston international, Greenville-Spartanburg international and Myrtle Beach international.
Terminal F may end up getting canceled from what I have heard. I hope not. But what they are doing to C to add more gates is pretty cool.
7 runways if you count the 3 additional ones
Next, I Recommend: SFO : OAK : SJC : STS
Fun fact: after the delta crash made dfw airport to place a small park with a radar an a plane to wash, a few years later they modified it to include a tent with 9/11 stuff this was not a shocker because a American airlines flight was one of the planes to crash thats why theres so many 9/11 parks in dfw these days the park is known for plane spotters i go there because its a nice place to see while eating Bojangles.
Love field for me! After 10 years of flying out of DFW I have never arrived at the same terminal I departed from. I hate that damn orange bus!
Get your car then drive to the terminal that your bag arrives.
What’s the issue with different gates or terminals? Park at a lot outside the grounds or take skylink to get to your departure and car. Or Uber or Lyft or alto there and back or get a friend etc. Not really as difficult as you think.

Loop 12 is not even remotely a highway east of I35. It's a city street with stoplights and a 35mph speed limit.
DFW is not Fort Worth's airport. Meacham is. DFW is half in Dallas County and half in Tarrant County and is Dallas-Fort Worth's airport.
Yes...?
@@ChicagoGeographer just looking at the title that says Dallas and Fort Worth's airports compared. That would be Love Field and Mecham Field. Just thought I missed something.
DFW is owned by Ft Worth and Dallas.

To county line They just haven’t cause it no reason Don’t think GPV and Euless don’t pay Tarrant tax
@@geemane4390 What??? DFW is almost 50/50 between Dallas and Tarrant County. DFW was never FTW...that was GSW, Alliance and Meacham. Dallas and FTW mayors are both on the board. The rest I can't translate.

Love Field will always have a extra historical component, the last airport where Kennedy arrived being still alive
damn that wright amendment was remarkably stupid and corrupt
In spite of Founder's Plaza, DFW is too spread out for good plane spotting. Love Field is in Avery dense area, good for plane spotting.
I hope you like SW B737's
Love Field has a Whataburger, DFW doesn't so it's no contest.
Whataburger is in terminal E @ DFW

It does have one tho....
@@northtexasfan but, as I've asked before, who the hell flies out of Terminal E? If it was in A or B where American flies most of its planes out of then I'd still think DFW sucks but for different reasons.

Where can I fly to out of FW Mecham Airport?
I live in Fort Worth and wish they would expand meacham airport. They been talking about having commercial flights for the last 10 years and nothing ever happens. Fort Worth is a beast on its own with 1 million people. So I don’t get why we share an airport with Dallas. Makes no sense to go on like this.
It will never happen.
American Airlines is one of the largest employers based in FT Worth. Their hub is at DFW airport. AA has too much invested in DFW airport.
If Meacham were to ever open to commercial traffic American Airlines would probably move to Dallas.
Please do IAH and HOU
Compare Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport vs. Phoenix Mesa-Gateway Airport.
Add Tucson to that.
Well since we are in Texas haha how about Houston: Intercontinental vs Hobby
You forgot about Meacham Airport. That's Fort Worth
do houston hobby vs bush intercontinental
You should orlando mco vs sanford
The way the metro is growing, love field needs to relocate to Celina, due to the rapid growth to the north.
DFW is by far better. So much easier and never too busy. It’s always just right. No comparison in my eyes. I will always choose DFW over love field.

people talk.
so i'm gonna say this.
love field staying open after DFW opened had nothing to do with the aviation industry.
and yeah, all the aviation people just lost their shit reading that sentence.
part of the agreement of opening DFW with the FAA was that love in dallas and GSW in ft. worth would close to commercial traffic.
now give me just a little more rope here.
the reason love did not close was due to somone's son standing up someone's daughter as a escort to a debutante' ball. someone blackballed someone from joining a country club. someone committed intercourse maximus on someone's real estate deal with the land agreement that was to become DFW.
something happened somewhere. and considering the egos in texas and dallas specifically, think "what would JR do?" if you don't know who JR is i don't want to talk to you. think jerry jones on steroids. those are the types of egos we're dealing with in dallas.
and that is why dallas pulled out of the deal and kept love open.
i put this premise together listening to people in the oilfield talk. and as we all know, there isn't very much oil or gas in texas.............
LOVE has flights to Montego Bay Jamaica.
I never knew that Love Field is older than DFW; I thought DFW was older

Yes and Southwest has 18 of them, kind of limits competition doesn't it?
@@anthonyglass170 They should have 4 as per the Wright Amendment. It stated that if the amendment was overturned, all gate ownership would return to the airlines that had them at the time of the amendment. SW had 4 gates when all the other airlines were FORCED to move operations to DFW. SW fought that tooth and nail when they wanted to overturn Wright, and, just like they were the only airline allowed to stay back then, they favored SW and didn't give back the gates to AA, Delta, United, etc.
