What Is Basque? Uncovering Boise’s Basque Heritage

  • If you’ve ever been to Spain, maybe you’ve stepped foot in the Basque Country. A sometimes politically contentious northern area near the border of France. Little is known about Basque history because they didn’t document things, they passed their traditions down through story and song. The Boise Basque community estimates between 10 to 15 thousand people, making it the most concentrated city of Basques in the United States. Some are descended from sheepherders that settled here, some come from families who fled Franco’s regime, but mostly it’s a mystery why Boise has such a large Basque culture. The heart of this community is the Basque block, located between Capitol Blvd. and 6th street. Here you will find a cultural center, a museum, restaurants and bars. We met up with the owner and operator of the Basque Market to find out more about Boise’s unique Basque heritage.

    my girlfriend was born and raised in the Basque Country, I have lived there for a few months out of the past few years and when he said "Kalimotxo" all the memories came flooding back. Such a great and unique culture.

    Rather than near the border of France, the Basque Country is ON the border, I mean, there are Basques with Spanish nationality and Basques with French nationality. Most Basques in Boise come from the Biscay area, but the Basques of California are mostly from the French side.

    Travel tip for Valencia Spain.. If you have the afternoon take the bus to el Palmer about 30-45 minutes south. A couple of GREAT original paella restaurants with amazing Jamon iberico.

    I know that Bakersfield California has a sizable number of Basque the same people but most of them are from the French part of the Basque Country
    The United States has an uncanny way of creating a big bubble that’s English language speaking
    Although there is no national language which requires English like in France requiring in French, The American culture almost instinctively edges out other language speakers and this was done purposely until about the 1990s well enough Spanish speakers came to overwhelm the culture and establish it has a secondary language
    I feel for anybody living in Idaho who wants to learn the Basque language and use it on a regular basis although there’s 15,000 Basque people you’re gonna have trouble finding a language community that will envelop you like the English speakers around you
    I know I have an immigrant father and snuggles and I was really not able to learn the language because they couldn’t teach it to me
    It doesn’t matter what it is

      @@JonConti hi there, we don't refuse to talk in Spanish if you don't know Euzkera but when we are among our people we will speak in Euzkera to keep the language going for even more generations. A language is what makes you part of a community among other things so why not keep it going?

      @Manny Quintero Boy, that's not true. Most of the basques know how to speak spanish.

    • @tichy70
      @tichy70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@janiregarciapinaga1544 what you said is true! My grandfather for example if he knew you can speak Euzkera then he will talk you in that language. However, if you don't know any Euzkera, he was quite happy to talk to you in Spanish; if I remember correctly lots of his friends only spoke Spanish but didn't stop them having very strong friendships. If you don't use it we will loose it so we are trying to keep it going for further generations, so we don't loose a huge part of what make us Euzkal Herriko Jendea ( people of the Basque Country).
      Your response sounds a bit harsh, but maybe it got lost in translation, what you said sounds more like if it was an order, "We know we have to speak Spanish!".
      Take care and stay safe.
      _________________________________________________________________________Zuk esan duzuna egia da! Nire aitonak, adibidez, Euzkeran hitz egin dezakezu jakingo balu, hizkuntza horretan hitz egingo du. Hala ere, Euzkerarik ezagutzen ez baduzu, nahiko pozik zegoen zurekin gaztelaniaz hitz egitean; ondo gogoratzen badut bere lagun askok gaztelaniaz bakarrik hitz egiten zuten baina ez zieten oso adiskidetasun sendoa izatea eragotzi. Erabiltzen ez baduzu galduko dugu, beraz, belaunaldi gehiagorako mantentzen saiatzen ari gara, beraz ez dugu Euzkal Herriko egiten gaituen zati handi bat galtzen.
      Zure erantzuna zorrotz samarra dirudi, baina agian itzulpenean galdu egin da, zuk esan zenuena gehiago dirudi, "Badakigu gaztelaniaz hitz egin behar dugula!". Zure errepikapenaren kasua espero dut.
