Good job keeping the smile Sir. You have the right attitude for owning this type of car; something that many years of owning Italian vehicles has crushed out of me, lol :-)
Ouch. But remember how much you saved on purchase ... looking on the bright side. I strongly suggest you don’t try to buy a cheap solution - you need to know it is all good. All rooting for you Jack.
Bad Luck Jack. As soon as I first saw the images of the crack when you discovered it alarm bells rang. Simply because I've been there done that with a "lesser" means of getting about. Got images of it somewhere. Twenty years ago I took a chance and bought a car the previous owner had given up on. Several garages had investigated and failed to identify the persistent problem. Persistent problem being misfire and overheating on any lengthy trip. He cut his losses and got rid., I took a chance and on the way home in the car, it started to play up just as he had described and pro-garages had failed to identify. Amateur me without a time is money or profit gun to my head, took my time and systematically checked as much as I could. On the next run, I had removed the Spark Plug Cover as that will save time checking basics. As soon as the misfire occurred and the temperature gauge started to rise, I pulled over and lifted the bonnet. Looking down the deeply recessed Spark Plug locations, one of them was filled to the brim with bright coloured liquid. ... Coolant escaping from a hairline crack at the bottom of the Spark Plug location swamping it. That was where the coolant was being lost and leading to overheating and misfire. I guessed the Head was scrap and beyond repair and taking it to a local three man engineering firm, they confirmed it was not possible to repair the alloy as the crack's unseen parts were deeper into the metal. Always best to second opinion check before scrapping things, just in case. So with the fact that only a few thousand of this particular model were made, the scrapyards would not be full of them. However the car Gods were on my side with my first visit to my favourite "Remove it yourself" scrapyard. Close to the main office was a near identical car having suffered a rear end shunt.. Having already removed the Cylinder Head ( Big, heavy and awkward thing despite mainly lightweight alloy ) I knew the ropes and soon had a replacement good used spare ... and at a reasonable cost. The car was soon back to full health and was my reliable daily driver for three years until someone made me an offer. The previous owner and fellow enthusiast knowing my penchant for breathing life back into problem cars, contacted me before contacting the scrapman to take it away. That has happened to me on a few occasions. I rarely go looking for cars. Glad he did. As soon as I put the phone down having agreed to take on that challenge, the phone rang again. Another enthusiast with an equally attractive offer of one of my favourite cars for a project. It was an offer I refused and that decision was one of my "Regrets, I've had a few" as I did not expect to sort the other car so quickly. Cars and life can be like that. So chin up Jack, deep breaths and search for a good head. There will be one out there. Trick is, finding it. Good luck. You're well overdue due a change for the better.

Jack you’ve come this far and had so many ups and downs along the way. I’m confident that this is just another bump in the road. The only thing here is that unlike all of the contrived jeopardy in content these days you are actually living it. There must be a good engineering solution and if there isn’t someone will come up with one. I’ve always thought that as these cars age and owners need to skim heads during head gasket changes, there will eventually be a load of scrap heads that have gone past their machining limits. Someone will have a solution. I must admit I skipped through the adds but I’ll watch it again and endure them and then set the iPad playing a third time and do something else less boring instead. Hope that helps and keep pushing on because you’ll end up with a fantastic 308 in the end that you will love and trust.
Jack you are an inspiration to all armchair classic car fans , for the cylinder head try DK Engineering , keep up the good work, a real channel ,real cars with real issues .

And I was wincing about the £1500 replacement cylinder head I need for my 2000 defender 😬. Totally enthralling story jack. Good luck with your search. I’m sure someone out there will fix you up 👍🏼👏🏻

Best of luck with finding a replacement head at reasonable cost. What a pain that it can’t be repaired. Like you say it’s a massive learning curve, which provides enjoyment, but set-backs like that are hard to stomach. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger as they say 👍
Oh dear ☹️ I really feel for you, but I have NEVER got away with boiling-over any car I've owned. Good luck in the search for a new head, but 3 grand is a hard hit to take. I look forward to videos on the search and finally getting the 308 running and driving perfectly!
Oh man that blows. Sorry to hear that, especially after having had such a heck of a time to remove it. Hope you find a suitable replacement soon... cheers from the 🇺🇸
I have seen worse cracks opened up with a die grinder and filled with TIG process. Only one bearing journal to rebore, no problem for a master machinist that knows how to use a boring bar. Think outside the box... there are a dozen really qualified welders on youtube that can weld this... and a few top job-shop machinists that can line bore... Keith Fenner is doing a larger scale line bore job on his channel right now.. on an excavator part, same principles apply. A rotating shaft is carried in bearings that are inline with the work area, and it carries a cutter. Seen this done a hundred times when family had an auto repair shop specializing in import and competition. Dig it out... heat it up... TIG in new aluminum... bore cam bearing journal.
yup, i'm pretty sure it can be fixed. Grind, tig, line bore, straighten. 2-3 days worth of work? i didn't realize how expensive the 308 parts are. a 355 long block is cheaper!
That will be tough to repair, you would have to cut out the cam journal to get to the crack, then re weld a new billet piece back in and machine. The heat generated with welding will distort the head and lining up / machining the oil gallery will be hard. You're probably looking at at least 15 hours work, probably at least £1000 to repair all in and that's if it even works out. You're still left with a repaired head that could crack again, better to spend £2 - 3k on another head.
How annoying! Looks like you've got a good mindset for dealing with what is ultimately, just another little bump in the road. Imagine how sweet it will feel when you are back in this, driving it about again! Best of luck to you.
Word of Advice Jack...I learned from experience as you......Pay the mechanic each time....then its his problem. I used to work on my 1982 GTSi myself...Now I only change tires on it. lol
So many thoughts.... First, I just watched all the ads, probably the first time I have ever done that, I was not aware that using "skip ad" affected your revenue. Secondly, so sorry to hear such tragic news, gutted for you. Impressed but not surprised to see you fall on your sword regarding what MIGHT have caused it. You are a straight-up kind of guy. Lastly, just a wild stab, there is a TH-camr who swapped some Japanese engine into his 308. I have not watched his stuff, but I wonder what became of the original engine. Maybe a lead?
In Poland there is a really good company that reconditions heads. It’s called “Top Mar”. They did an amazing job on a Ferrari 599 which belongs to Patrick Mikiciuk.
Jack reach out to ratarosa and franny from Heidi and frannys garage as she has a 308 and lots of spares, if not she will know someone that has that head you need.
sorry to hear that..! you will get a head, If it did not run through so many vital parts of the head you could have got the Lock n Stitch guys to repair it, Its not impossible as ive seen Jay leno lock n stitch similar damage but it was on impossible parts to find. You must always make sure your fan thermostat are working on an old exotic and it pays to use the Evens-Cool waterless coolant as it dose not boil until 180-deg. Also I never jack on the jacking points! Find a good solid alternative like under the shocker mount ect..! love the channel and I will watch adds through in future, could you put up a patron link ? People don't mind helping a little an it can be low key link. Thanks, Paul
I'm sorry for the trouble but you're right old cars do come with ups and downs would love to own one but out of my price range will keep a lookout for you here in the US.
As someone else mentioned, get a retro piece of art made from the cracked head! Original Ferrari components made into art go for more than the replacements. It's silly, but it's worth a try.
When Giovanni tightened the bolts on that head at the factory some sunny afternoon in 1981 little did he know that 40 years in to the future thousands of people would be watching the analysis of a crack that developed in it with baited breath.
@@Number27 there you go a lead within hours that's a possible blessing bud. Prayers sent up that you can have a smoother path ahead. Blessings from Glasgow in Christ Jesus. P.S. My Rover 75 head is junk too lol I feel your pain though not £3.5k pain
So sorry about the outcome jack. Kick in the pants but onward and upward. If the replacement head is good then hopefully the curse will be lifted 👍. Shared this with mates of mine, so hopefully a few more subscribers...
Well, that sucks. Really sorry to hear this. But hoping that it ends well with a not-so-expensive head replacement. I really want to hear that exhaust again. Soon!
Very unfortunate. I "liked" previous issues you had on the 308 as it gave us the opportunity for more videos. Somehow, they were inconsequential. This one is very different as it takes a heavy financial toll. I really hope you'll find a good replacement. Keep your spirit high, in the end, all will be good.
If watching an ad or two helps keep this series going and gets you and the Influenzo back on the road then I’m in. Personally I don’t mind if you drop one in every 5 or 6 minutes if it works 👍
Tbh Jack I thought number 1 on your list would be 'please give me lots of money' hope you can get it fixed I honestly thought you were on the home straight getting the head repaired, good luck.👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
What a sad state of affairs, your 308 is nice because it gives the rest of us a little more confidence to maybe try to deal with more special older cars...... Great journey to follow....
Hi Jack, having enjoyed watching your videos for some time, I look forward to watching the one where you get this latest challenge sorted, I have every confidence that you will
🥺 Dreadful news Jack but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger apparently. Already proven yourself to be remarkably resilient. This is just another hurdle to overcome before the Influenzo is back and running sweet. Imagine the sense of achievement so, chin up and carry on. 🙂
So sorry. We got our replacement head at Euro Spares. They were great but it was a bit expensive. We went with a used head, pulled both and had them both reworked and that proved to be a prudent move. Good luck! Post to F-chat and see if the guys there have a lead. F

Word of Advice Jack...I learned from experience as you......Pay the mechanic each time....then its his problem. I used to work on my 1982 GTSi myself...Now I only change tires on it. lol
Ha!! It’s l’art of the fun!
Thanks Bob much appreciate the support. That was the wrong engine on swap car.. GTSI .. but thanks!
Thats a thoughtful recommendation. I've noticed that they are already in each others YT comments so he knows them (all 3) and I'm sure he will be.
H&F's is a 4 valve...
LOL I just said same thing haha
Argh. Sorry to hear that. I'm sure someone will come to the rescue with a reasonably priced head. Onwards and upwards!
sorry to hear that..! you will get a head, If it did not run through so many vital parts of the head you could have got the Lock n Stitch guys to repair it, Its not impossible as ive seen Jay leno lock n stitch similar damage but it was on impossible parts to find.
I'm sorry for the trouble but you're right old cars do come with ups and downs would love to own one but out of my price range will keep a lookout for you here in the US.
really sorry to hear this Jack, I've watched the adverts, shared and liked.
Ah thanks Roger, much appreciated!!
Jack, sorry to hear it is unrepairable, I hope you can find a suitable replacement.
The road velongs to influenzo. I like your channel so much that I always watch the ads and like your videos.
As someone else mentioned, get a retro piece of art made from the cracked head! Original Ferrari components made into art go for more than the replacements. It's silly, but it's worth a try.
Gutted for you mate, hope things start to fall into place for you. Chin up.
Sorry to hear this, hope you get it sorted easily
I have changed from personalisation to all on my subscriber status, hope it helps Jack. Something will come up, your subscribers are rooting for you!
That’s very kid thanks buddy!! Main thing is to watch the ads if they come up and you’re interested in them!
When Giovanni tightened the bolts on that head at the factory some sunny afternoon in 1981 little did he know that 40 years in to the future thousands of people would be watching the analysis of a crack that developed in it with baited breath.
Good luck finding a new head. As a long term Ferrari owner I can say, it's still well worth it for the high days.
Painful. Good job it is such a beautiful car when stationary. Keep going dude.
Nightmare for you Jack! Stay positive buddy I'm sure someone will have a head for sensible money 💰! I've got everything crossed for you 🤞
Hi Jack...I have a lead for a replacement head, but how do I contact you?
My Instagram account is the best way, you can message me there! @number27vids !
@@Number27 there you go a lead within hours that's a possible blessing bud. Prayers sent up that you can have a smoother path ahead. Blessings from Glasgow in Christ Jesus.
P.S. My Rover 75 head is junk too lol I feel your pain though not £3.5k pain
@@Number27 God's word says "perseverance builds character and that leads to HOPE"
Chap at work just spent £7k on an engine rebuild for his Discovery. That he bought for £6k. It could be worse...
@@plhwilliams ....and then something else will break ;)
Holy moly. The car that keeps giving you crap!! Hope you can get something sorted Jack.
After all your efforts! Feel for you mate. "Don't let this put you off buying a 308" , What!
Good luck with your search Jack, really hope you find a head, love watching your channel, keep your head up,👍.
So sorry about the outcome jack. Kick in the pants but onward and upward. If the replacement head is good then hopefully the curse will be lifted 👍. Shared this with mates of mine, so hopefully a few more subscribers...
Feel your pain having owned a 456 and a 360 Modena we are only ever custodians.
Good Luck.
That's so frustrating!! I hope you manage to get it all sorted soon without it being too expensive!!
People convert them to electric when the engines go. Electric Classic Cars Wales did a 308 recently. They might have some spare engine parts!
If watching an ad or two helps keep this series going and gets you and the Influenzo back on the road then I’m in. Personally I don’t mind if you drop one in every 5 or 6 minutes if it works 👍
Strikes me as a manufacturing flaw.
I feel your pain. I am sorry. Bless you.
Tbh Jack I thought number 1 on your list would be 'please give me lots of money' hope you can get it fixed I honestly thought you were on the home straight getting the head repaired, good luck.👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
Sorry to hear about the head Jack. Make sure the replacement gets crack checked before you splash on it.
Im so sorry Jack😧..well at least you've got a fancy paper weight now 👍
What a sad state of affairs, your 308 is nice because it gives the rest of us a little more confidence to maybe try to deal with more special older cars...... Great journey to follow....
We feel terrible for you but we're on the journey with you no matter what.
Hi Jack, having enjoyed watching your videos for some time, I look forward to watching the one where you get this latest challenge sorted, I have every confidence that you will
Thank you Nick!!
🥺 Dreadful news Jack but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger apparently. Already proven yourself to be remarkably resilient. This is just another hurdle to overcome before the Influenzo is back and running sweet. Imagine the sense of achievement so, chin up and carry on. 🙂
Adverts watched. Good luck, Jack. It will be worth it in summer when you're throwing the Influenzo around those country roads
Thanks chap!!!
Dam Jack we can't say that the channel lacks adventure. Will keep the eyes open and lets hope a head comes trough :)
So sorry. We got our replacement head at Euro Spares. They were great but it was a bit expensive. We went with a used head, pulled both and had them both reworked and that proved to be a prudent move. Good luck! Post to F-chat and see if the guys there have a lead. F
Thanks guys!! I’ll get there eventually!!
I feel your emotion! I hope you can it sorted.
Good luck on the passion. Carry on Forward!!
Serious bummer. Will ask around as I know a few local shops have worked on 308s over the years. In the meantime I'll go click through on a few ads!
Bugger! Good luck with your head hunt Jack.
