    I been assaulted in a TTC bus. I have also worked for 4 years in a homeless shelter with people experiencing all sort of mental/physical challenges. My advice 1) Stay aware of your surroundings, 2) Always place "leg length" of space between you and others, 3) If a person is violent, do not engage (including looking at their eyes) and stay calm until you can slowly move elsewhere, & 4) Call for help/attract attention if you feel in danger. But don't let fear take over your daily commute; basic self defence classes also help feel more confident and avoid being anyone's punching bag.

      Mental health is overused excessively here in North America. Call them as it is, They are EVIL PEOPLE! You can't combat them with an army of Psychiatrists or Psychologists. The solution to them is jail them! The problem is if people are charged with a crime, they always use "mental health" problem as a defense and sometimes get away with it.

    After Covid it just seems like the homeless are even more destitute and there seems to be more aggressively mentally unstable ppl on the trains. The subway is way dirtier and unorganized and seems like there are no real authority figures around that could do anything to stop any incident. There is literally shutdowns due to issues at track level almost every week now. The ttc definitely feels less safe. Toronto feels less safe. We need to figure out how to get these ppl help and get them off the streets.

    • @FitChickGlows
      @FitChickGlows ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Totally agree on every point. However, I feel the track level problems seem to be happening almost every day or every other day. There is ALWAYS an announcement of a track level problem practically every day that I ride. This is unreal. We are getting too used to critical
      issues every day. And, yes, I’ve never seen the TTC so nasty post Covid. The floors and seats of the subway cars and subways themselves. 🤢 And, you’re so right there doesn’t seem to be any organized authority for anything on the TTC. The whole system is broken as far as I’m concerned. It’s like a free for all. And too many people need help and are getting more aggressive. Which am I surprised when we don’t help them and put in the infrastructure for the help that they need. It’s abominable. Of course it’s going to implode. As much as we need more officers that will not be the full answer. And until we get to the social needs we will continue to see this.

    • @seekittycat
      @seekittycat ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wish TTC will install the barriers like they have in Asia. Keeps the tracks clean from fire hazard + much safer in busy stations. Covid made mental illness much worst and here's to hoping we can gradually heal and have more programs for people struggling

      Lmfao you think because a ticket person cuts people a break it’s allowing a flow of crime?
      Do you even ride the transit?
      The fuck is this point, people break into the system everyday, you can WALK into almost every station on the ground without going through a pay booth.
      Not to mention you just causally said “all the poor people are the cause”, so the guy who set that girl on fire? The group of teenagers? Like so you read what you post before you post it?
      Quiet lenient? My pregnant wife was kicked off a bus last month because she didn’t have the extra dollar.
      So stupid

    • @reqausxobi
      @reqausxobi ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nevermindlaughs It is good that you are bringing light to your situation. I am sorry your wife was disrespected like that. Given the amount of people that try to cheat the system, the TTC bus driver should have appreciated your wife for attempting to pay honestly. In fact, I am also disappointed by the other passengers for not offering the extra dollar.
      I was just suggesting that, regardless of class, there are people who are not appreciative of the TTC employees who are lenient.
      By the way, all sorts of people can be short on change. Hardly anyone carries coins and some people may have forgotten to fund their Presto.

    On a good note , this is giving people real world practice instead of everyone just mindlessly scrolling thru their phone playing candy crush.
    Just like your body needs practice to fight viruses instead of constantly sanitizing your hands every 3 minutes. To my point, keeping your head on a swivel will prevent you from being an easy target.
    And help your neighbour above all, that neighbour being the total stranger beside you that's being harassed. Don't just sit there in your seat, all afraid and nervous, staring at your phone or even worse, recording the incident when you could've been helping.

    They need to remove shelters close to the subway system to out of the city. With all due respect , to the less fortunate. Mass majority of these incidences occur from homeless people who are drug addicts and some are mentally unstable. The station should not allow these people in the station.
    They always
    Pan handle at Bloor and or finch
    And nobody is doing anything about it.
    Pan handling in TTC is prohibited bylaw.
    And are subjected to prosecution. So why hasn’t the TTC enforce this?
    These very same pan handlers also enter TTC without paying their fare.
    1. Relocate the shelters away from the city
    2. Refuse to allow street persons inside the TTC (have them stay in their shelters ).
    Things should improve

    I take the TTC everyday for the last 10 years (short female) and it's been a bit crazier after covid but not much tbh. I've been through smoke in the tunnel, help pull a lady up who jumped on the track, got smacked in the face by a chicken man, threatened by teenagers etc etc. It's always been crazy but generally even chatting with people out of their mind off drugs people won't touch you. Just note that when it's cold there will be more homeless, which is fine IMO just keep walking you get to go home they don't at least let them stay warm. Stay grouped with people and just mind your own business (I like to read). When you feel threatened push the emergency alarm no matter what. Don't listen to music with both ears, stay away from the yellow line, don't talk to strangers, and if someone is yelling just give them alot of space.

There was someone was pacing back and forth around my cart, and someone grabbed my phone at a stop, and ran out with it. I got it back, but I had to yell for some help (by a passenger not a staff member) so I got it back, but my phone has many cracks now because he threw it on the floor when the other passenger grabbed him.

      Because the inspectors will be on city news in a heartbeat if they stop someone who is black and did not pay they would report how the white inspectors are raciest and the poor black man just lost his presto card. Its safer for them to keep their jobs if they do nothing. It's not like it is in Europe where people who don't pay can get punched in the face by fare inspectors and everyone will say "well that's what you get for not paying".
      Toronto copied Europe with the honor sytem when paying but Toronto is not copying the way the fare inspectors are.

    I quit my downtown Toronto job in the late 80s because of the hoards of people on the transit. Too many unhinged people dressed nicely or in rags, no matter! I remember telling my friend about this woman in a suit ripping a hole in the back of my sweater because her bracelet got caught on it. We were so stuffed in there amd she just yanked and pulled herself free without any acknowlegment that I was a human being.
    My friend said: "When you're treated like a heard, you become cattle!"
    No, I want to live in a civilized environment.

    Coming home from work in brampton when I live in south etobicoke has gotten nuts...and only when traveling closer to Toronto. The first day some guy decides to do planks in the middle of the dirty wet aisle. Then the 3rd day people getting on the bus opening their beer and drinking. They were different groups of people not knowing the others while belching cheers. There were kids coming home from school on that bus. I hate Toronto
