The lyrics paint an image of child birth too which my poetry professor pointed out to me. While it’s obviously sexual the lines “how could she flip it all upside down” or “she wears her crown” (crowning in pregnancy) or “how could it fit inside a body so petite”. Makes sense that the KiCk series concludes with the birth. Can’t believe he didn’t like that track.
It’s so crazy revisiting Xen and Mutant after the KicK series because they still sound imaginative and cool but feel soooo long ago because the evolution was so vast
While I think that Kick iii is great, I still think that it doesn't top Xen Or Mutant, they are just so amazing to me with their textures and atmospheres.
Is it just me or did Joya kinda feel like a tribute to Sophie? With it's synths and ethereal atmosphere, reminds me of some of the cuts off of Oil of Every Pearls. It actually made me cry first listen. So emotional.
Fantastic commentary on the series - thank you. Personally, knowing where Arca is in her transition, the kinda reverse entropy of the whole project (moving towards minimalism as layers of overwhelming texture are gradually stripped away) really synthesises what it has meant for me to start my own medical transition, finding serenity from within the mutation. This made iiiii (5) the most impactful instalment for me by virtue of its culminant nature. But as the whole thing is an undulating constellation this doesn't necessarily make it the 'best' in my mind either - the work isn't so linear. the whole thing is a shattered and reconstituted snapshot of a living being, from the primal kick of a foetus to the final Lazarus reflex of death.
As someone who woke up one morning and saw two arca albums, checked their Instagram and see that two more albums were dropping, it felt nearly impossible to be able to deep dive into all of the albums. I'm glad I have a bit of a guideline to what will appeal to me on each album and what I can expect. I'll eventually have to listen to all of them back to back and see what speaks to me most out of all four projects
r/arcamusic has some great analysis of these albums if ur looking for more in-depth but i think this review does a decent job. i love all four of these new albums from arca so much i’ve been listening nonstop
This album was so freaking good. Arca continues to wow me, I wish them the best!!! They are just as inspirational and close to my heart as SOPHIE was, and I'm so glad they continue to push the boundaries.

Listening through these albums reminded me a lot of going through Brockhampton's Saturation trilogy the first time. Not musically or anything, just that there's some amazing musical ideas scattered all over the place on these, as with those, and the simple fact that so much work and so many unique sounds and ideas were created in such a short time is incredible. Huge props to Arca for showing love for the craft.
i pretty much agree with (almost) everything. I love Kick iii SO much. But honestly, all the Kick albums together are such an impressive body of work and really take you on an incredible journey
You gave them much higher scores than I was expecting lol. Pleasantly surprised though. Me personally, I wouldn’t rate any of the kicks anything lower than a 9. I’ve been a huge Arca fan for a bit so it’s really hard for her to ever make something I don’t love. 3 is my favorite as well, but 4 is my second favorite because of its beauty and softness. It engages me in the same way a Tirzah album would if that makes sense. Colourgrade is another one of my favorites this year and I had it on repeat for a good while. It’s music you don’t have to think too hard about, and I love that type of stuff sometimes. Songs like Witch and Altar are ones I’ve been coming back to often.
You had me at Yasssthony Queentano. While I agree Kick iii is the best, I gotta say Prada/Rakata might be Arca's best in my opinion. She really fed us. Besides being visonary in music, she also is in visuals. The music videos and covers just add to the whole thing.

iiiii is probably my favorite of the bunch, at least so far. It grabbed me instantly, but we'll see when I get more time with the others. It's a lot in a very short amount of time. Arca is the shit.
i'm honestly obsessed with this project, aside from her work with bjork and twigs this is the first arca project to really grab me and i cant get enough, my favourite right now has to be 4 or 5, and my least fave is 2 (side note; fuck sia)

love this review anthony but i do not get at all how you think kick ii had no focus. even if you don't understand the lyrics, which obviously tell you about the theme for the album, the style is pretty cohesive? the intro is a bit off, but it foreshadows the second half of the album that is more sinister and experimental, with the first half being reggaeton bangers, and each track transitions into the other pretty incredibly for how stark the difference between the two halves are.
am i the only one that thinks Kick ii was better than Kick iii? iii was more consistent but ii had a lot more tracks that i liked. i really think Rakata-Tiro-Luna Llena was the serve of the century. actually, i wish Arca would've kept up that raggaeton energy all through kick ii

I have no trouble listening to 100 gecs but Arca’s music pushes insanity to such a degree that i’m left feeling like a clueless boomer. And this is coming from someone who a) is younger than her and b) is a fellow spanish speaking south american
I'm amazed I had to scroll this far down to find a single comment from someone who also doesn't get it. I tried listening to Kick 3 on a few occasions and had to turn it off every time. The songs all just sound the same to me, just some tight syncopated beats with no melody and some rapping that I can't understand because I don't speak much Spanish.
@@drfunkinstein1 Yeah i had the same issues with the album (aside from the not understanding spanish part.) However, i did come to love the album closer “Joya” since that song has pretty clear and enjoyable melodies as well as some beautiful singing. I recommend checking that one out. Lyrically, that track is basically a love song that Arca wrote for their boyfriend, who they consider to be a really special “gem”

I loved all of them. This is easily one of my favourite artists right now. I would only hope to aspire to the level of raw creativity that they had while doing this record in my own personal work. I see the criticisms and respectully disagree.
I approached these albums expecting to be overwhelmed, slightly reluctant...little hesitant. But as we Scots say - 'Get yer heid right' and they unveil themselves as works of real beauty.
I agree that kick iii is the best: is like, i dont know, hyper-reguetón or something, and i like to think that its a great way to improve the genre; and yes, kick iiii is my least favorite, it was so... don't know, less unique than the others.

i pretty much agree with (almost) everything. I love Kick iii SO much. But honestly, all the Kick albums together are such an impressive body of work and really take you on an incredible journey
You gave them much higher scores than I was expecting lol. Pleasantly surprised though. Me personally, I wouldn’t rate any of the kicks anything lower than a 9. I’ve been a huge Arca fan for a bit so it’s really hard for her to ever make something I don’t love. 3 is my favorite as well, but 4 is my second favorite because of its beauty and softness. It engages me in the same way a Tirzah album would if that makes sense. Colourgrade is another one of my favorites this year and I had it on repeat for a good while. It’s music you don’t have to think too hard about, and I love that type of stuff sometimes. Songs like Witch and Altar are ones I’ve been coming back to often.

iiiii is probably my favorite of the bunch, at least so far. It grabbed me instantly, but we'll see when I get more time with the others. It's a lot in a very short amount of time. Arca is the shit.

love this review anthony but i do not get at all how you think kick ii had no focus. even if you don't understand the lyrics, which obviously tell you about the theme for the album, the style is pretty cohesive? the intro is a bit off, but it foreshadows the second half of the album that is more sinister and experimental, with the first half being reggaeton bangers, and each track transitions into the other pretty incredibly for how stark the difference between the two halves are.

am i the only one that thinks Kick ii was better than Kick iii? iii was more consistent but ii had a lot more tracks that i liked. i really think Rakata-Tiro-Luna Llena was the serve of the century. actually, i wish Arca would've kept up that raggaeton energy all through kick ii

I have no trouble listening to 100 gecs but Arca’s music pushes insanity to such a degree that i’m left feeling like a clueless boomer. And this is coming from someone who a) is younger than her and b) is a fellow spanish speaking south american
I'm amazed I had to scroll this far down to find a single comment from someone who also doesn't get it. I tried listening to Kick 3 on a few occasions and had to turn it off every time. The songs all just sound the same to me, just some tight syncopated beats with no melody and some rapping that I can't understand because I don't speak much Spanish.
@@drfunkinstein1 Yeah i had the same issues with the album (aside from the not understanding spanish part.) However, i did come to love the album closer “Joya” since that song has pretty clear and enjoyable melodies as well as some beautiful singing. I recommend checking that one out. Lyrically, that track is basically a love song that Arca wrote for their boyfriend, who they consider to be a really special “gem”

I loved all of them. This is easily one of my favourite artists right now. I would only hope to aspire to the level of raw creativity that they had while doing this record in my own personal work. I see the criticisms and respectully disagree.
