"There is a difference between learning a language in class and speaking it in real life". True. I am pretty much C2 in english (being french), but i can't exactly brag about it yet, because of that. I have the same problem with listening in english. I spent a decade (yes 10 years) trying to solve that on TH-cam. And finally pretty much got around it after all this time. But speaking english is the other big problem. I don't have that much troubles with spanish or my little level in japanese and italian.
I am french, and i can tell you that you still haven't seen anything when it comes to our crappy banks. One day, they sent me a (physical) mail at my appartment's adress in order to tell me that they had no idea where i was living (for real), and canceled my payment card as a result. It took months to get it back, only for them to cancel it again (by mistake apparently) a mere few days later. All in all, i spent 7 months without a card, having to pay everything with banknotes. Mind you, this is getting worse and worse, so get prepared.

    • @angiemuthoni
      @angiemuthoni  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Phew! For the language thing, you can only learn by being in the circumstances for real😂😂
You have quite an impressive list of languages in your array, well done!
Haha I’m out of the country in a few weeks so it looks like I dodged the bank bullet, but thanks for the heads up, it’ll be useful when I’m back😊

@@angiemuthoni Yep, it took a pretty long time to be able to reach a decent level in english. I don't even know why i even bothered learning it, since this is the one language i actually never need in my everyday life. I am simply stubborn and plagued by OCD...
Still, i hope your stay was pleasant and that it helped widen your perspectives. Traveling is indeed a great thing. Wish you the best.

Thank you, Angie, for an excellent video! Very informative. What are your thoughts about Expat seniors living in France? As retired educators (we helped a new school open in Lviv - Aug-Dec), we are exploring Poland (Dec-Jan), Estonia (Feb), and possibly France. Nice looks beautiful and welcoming. We seek a walkable, affordable, and comfortable place to call home. My wife Cindy has MS, so calm is a required component. I grew up in Los Angeles, working & driving 24/7, so the European pace is very attractive. Thank you. Dean & Cindy

Hey there! Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words. What a brilliant itinerary you have there, I wish you an enjoyable time! I would recommend the South of France, as that’s where I am most of the time-it seems to fit the description of everything you’ve mentioned in your comment. The environment is very calm, and the people are genuinely friendly and welcoming- not to mention the beautiful weather. I find the French culture quite easy to merge into as well, especially if you can get away with speaking a little French . About being an Expat, I would recommend doing a little research on your entry visa because I am not entirely well versed with it (I’m on a temporary resident visa) otherwise I am sure you’ll have the best days here! All the best.

Bank administration is not French bureaucracy. I would call French bureaucracy the state administration. When opening a bank account, it always takes few days to receive your credit card and the code. It's absolutely normal in most of the countries. It's not something specifically French. About the police interrogation when opening a bank account, yes it's true. You can experience the same when applying for renting an appartment.

Oh my your skin is dry there?! I live in the desert southwest of the US. My husband is from a small town near Toulouse. When we go there the humidity and the water make my skin feel better. But to be fair, we usually go in the summer. I have not experienced much of fall or spring there.... yet. The bank thing sounds like a nightmare, but now I understand why my husband must make appointments at the bank. Also in September we went to Nantes and a branch of the same bank had to call his "local" bank to take care of something about his account. I found it weird. Here in the US I think I could go to any bank (of my brand) and they would take care of my issue.

Opening an account in France sounds similar to how it is in my country. Even locals need appointments and we ask a lot of questions because they're always cracking down on money laundering. Non nationals have it even tougher because you have less of a paper trail than a citizen so documents have to be approved. Two weeks is a short time and it's lucky you have them mail the card, because customers have to just come in to pick their card up here😂😂 It must seem very stressful, though so I'm sorry you had such a hard time, but it's good that you had a kind lady assisting you😊

Hi Ryo! My visa is 7 months long, and I came through the French education program (TAPIF). I think the most important thing is to secure a job offer, and they should help you apply for a visa. Otherwise tourist visas are a good starting point, come see how it is and then look to extending/changing your type of visa.

I can understand your climate shock as in my past career I've been travelling a lot to a number of countries worldwide, including Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Senegal; but you're still lucky to be in the south of France where the weather is warmer and sunnier than in the north. You probably also have to adjust to the southern accent, as compared with the standard "Parisian" (northern) French taught in schools. As for bureaucracy, don't worry, we French natives also hate it. As we say in French: "Bon Courage".

    • @angiemuthoni

      Hey there!!
That’s such a cool move😊all the best as you prepare.
The primary considerations to make involve meeting administrative requirements, your visa and travel documents should be top of your priority list. I’d also recommend trying to find a job before you come here to support yourself unless you have a good chunk in your savings. Also, if you truly want to immerse yourself in language acquisition, aim for a smaller city as compared to the larger ones where they’re already used to tourists so they’re more likely to use English with you.
      Good luck!

Language: as any country where you are not native, don't rely on your school level which will always be at a beginner true level
    - language accent: France as any country is having its diversity. Talk to Edinburgh versus London or Texas versus NY, Beijing to Shanghai. Adaptation and flexibility is a must
    - administration: yes, France is leading the way which even as french is upsetting me
    - opening a bank account in France: try to open a bk account in UK, china, Thailand, Japan, USA 😂 you will have the same question and difficulties
2 week's opening an account and getting your credit card, that's pretty 👍
Question to you: how can you get social security and house support when not being french national?
    - weather: correct, Europe is not Africa warm weather ☁️🥶
    - making friends: even as french we struggle😂😂😂😂 on top, south of france is known for being rude, impolite and selfish
Mind too that by education, our parents since young age are teaching us to not speak to unknown person (security and education reason😊). We are allowed to politely answering but nothing more

Thanks for your comment Annie! ✨It’s quite insightful to receive all these details from a national, I’ve learnt so much!
On social security and house support, there’s provisions for foreign residents to receive the benefits, provided you have a valid Titre de séjour and you’re working. That’s how we got it😊

My exposure with languages has made me realise accents and dialects are diverse.... just because you went to AF doesn't mean all french speakers speak the same especially the r alphabet wueh 😂😂😅😅

Very true!!! AF can provide the learning experience but in real life it gets serious!😂😂
