As a raptors fan, I was really disappointed when this story came out. The raptors were struggling at the center position after Jakob got injured and it was frustrating that it turns out he was just wasting everyone's time by purposefully playing bad. If he had just worked on his game and became a reliable rotation player for us, he could have gotten paid more than the fixed bets would have gotten him.
It's true, but you know a guy with that serious a gambling problem was going to make it worse for himself if he received a +$10 million a year deal. In some ways, I think NBA fans got lucky that Jontay is the example going forward. Can you imagine the nightmare it would have been if Ant or Wemby was at the centre of this (As someone who doesn't believe the MJ secret suspension conspiracy).
The most frustrating thing about this story is that Porter basically became a gambling addict, getting specifically addicted to the NBA's biggest sponsor's product, the same way that HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NBA FANS are now addicted to Fan Duel and other online betting outlets after it's been pushed in their faces for a decade. And no one is talking about it, because every sports media outlet is completely bought and paid for by that same, addictive product. The NBA has no integrity if it "attacks the problem of" gambling with one hand and sells it aggressively with the other. Honestly I am impressed you are even HINTING out loud that this is a larger problem, even using neutral language - literally no one in sports media is covering this story properly because they know who pays their salaries in 2024.
What's funny or sad is if he was a better player this wouldn't have happened. The NBA has a long history of gambling on its own games. In every era there is superstars involved in gambling and on their own games. The FBI has documented and released the reports publicly and with names. Going all the way back to bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain who would bet on their finals games throughout their whole career. No one cares no one even cared that the greatest scorer in NBA history always seemed to score less and just not shoot as much in the playoffs and in the games he placed bets on. The NBA has never said or done anything to its star players who they know bet on their games. We have had whole teams involved in point shaving because their players owed money for cocaine, but only porter and 1 ref have been banned. Because it give the appearance they are doing something or care.
Why nba players or I should say NBA superstars have been betting on their own games finals included. Going back to the 50-60's all documented and released by the FBI. Every era the nba has had what would be gambling scandals if anyone cared but they don't. We have have full teams be involved in point shaving. The NBA fan is oblivious to what's going on. Even after refs getting caught. Sports betting isn't the problem it doesn't help but it's been in the nba from the start.
Shortly after he joined the Raptors, a Toronto sports writer did a story on his journey to the NBA. In the article the writer gushed about how Porter was a 'man of faith'. Turns out religion, or lack there-of does not a good person make. Every time I hear 'family values' spouted it makes me smh
This just highlights how addictive gambling is that a man can risk his NBA career where he could have potentially made millions just to gamble on games for a few thousand bucks.
I worked at dominos in data analysis and we had entire teams dedicated to catch ‘foul play’. No idea why you’d think you can get away with this while in the nba of all organizations😂 At dominos we could see if a store were using too much cheese compared to their revenue. Imagine the amount of employees involved with the nba and betting companies whose job is to protect their money
I never made the connection that his brother actually got a huge bag, dispite his injuries. Might distort your view on how money works. Betting sites seeing how everyone is betting on one dude no one has ever heard of, sounds too stupid to happen. He got cought? What a surprise! Its like making a successful bank robbery in your tiny home town and buying a Lamborghini the very next day.
Yeah, this kind of scheme would really only work if it involved a high-level rotation player that's going to get minutes no matter what. If the player has prop bets every night, then purposefully hitting your unders one out of every 10 times might not be noticeable. Plus, if there are a lot of people betting on you every night, having a few people make a ton of money off those unders also won't stand out so much.
I highly doubt he gets 20 years. He himself may not be rich, but he has the luxury of having a rich family member. He's going to have a very good, high-powered attorney. My prediction would be some kind of plea deal that has him out in a few years if he goes to prison at all.
@@GhostWriter-Gohan that has nothing to do with you not knowing how he handled it. You just want to act like you know what you're talking about when you don't lol
Wait how can he be justified for serving up to 20 years. I don’t think that’s fair. Now what he did wasn’t right but 20 years is excessive. Give him 5 max
20 years max doesn't at all mean he'll automatically or even likely get that. There's no way he's serving 20 years, so it's not even worth discussing that part of it.
If only they would do the refs the same as him. There are so many bad calls from them. Even when they review the tapes, they are still blind. Kevin Durant hoped 2 feet out of bound will in golden states, and the ref next to him still didn't see. RIGGED NBA GAMES. PERIOD!!!
I know you guys haven't been to jail much less pen, so let tell you; however bad you think it would suck to go from professional athlete to penitentiary, multiply it. Ten fold

They're definitely a weird family if you look into them. I root for a college team that recruited MPJ, and his dad is a handful. That said, MPJ seems to be doing just fine in Denver. He came in with a reputation for being a me-first player and has bought into a team role and plays hard on both ends of the court.
This is just another example of what I have thought for the last 2 decades and it's been even more "Vegas" controls most of what happens in "sports" and these "sports" are sports entertainment. Johntay is not alone, he's not the only one. These "weird occurances" or "strange calls or non calls". Or "superstar calls or non calls" are all done by these leagues or "Vegas".

One persons bad decisions is hardly a reflection that “society is pushing sports gambling”… these pitfalls happen
Jontay is just an idiot. That dude made almost 2million dollars from the NBA over 3 seasons. He got busted gambling and made less than 100K.

When I see a politician bang on about family values I always wonder how long it'll be before they're embroiled in a sex scandal of some kind.
5:42 Crazy that Jontay's the only player with a positive +/- for Toronto
Jontay should have just tried to be a decent rotation player in the NBA and he would made millions easily. Instead he does this.
Get rich quick mentality. Trying the legit process of self improvement would take too long.. he wanted the money “quick “

what's hilarious was that March 20th game was the only raptors game i went to last season...
Lots of people would wish to be in his position but Porter screwed it up. Wasted potential
Jontay’s face after making that three he tried to brick 😭🤣
Whole MPJ family went down hill feel bad for MPJ 😢
He was already making enough. Not only that, he was making enough to invest in SEVERAL self sustainable passive income options. Smh
