    As a raptors fan, I was really disappointed when this story came out. The raptors were struggling at the center position after Jakob got injured and it was frustrating that it turns out he was just wasting everyone's time by purposefully playing bad. If he had just worked on his game and became a reliable rotation player for us, he could have gotten paid more than the fixed bets would have gotten him.

      It's true, but you know a guy with that serious a gambling problem was going to make it worse for himself if he received a +$10 million a year deal.
      In some ways, I think NBA fans got lucky that Jontay is the example going forward. Can you imagine the nightmare it would have been if Ant or Wemby was at the centre of this (As someone who doesn't believe the MJ secret suspension conspiracy).

  • @eb9782
    @eb9782 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

    The most frustrating thing about this story is that Porter basically became a gambling addict, getting specifically addicted to the NBA's biggest sponsor's product, the same way that HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NBA FANS are now addicted to Fan Duel and other online betting outlets after it's been pushed in their faces for a decade. And no one is talking about it, because every sports media outlet is completely bought and paid for by that same, addictive product.
    The NBA has no integrity if it "attacks the problem of" gambling with one hand and sells it aggressively with the other. Honestly I am impressed you are even HINTING out loud that this is a larger problem, even using neutral language - literally no one in sports media is covering this story properly because they know who pays their salaries in 2024.

      What's funny or sad is if he was a better player this wouldn't have happened. The NBA has a long history of gambling on its own games. In every era there is superstars involved in gambling and on their own games. The FBI has documented and released the reports publicly and with names. Going all the way back to bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain who would bet on their finals games throughout their whole career. No one cares no one even cared that the greatest scorer in NBA history always seemed to score less and just not shoot as much in the playoffs and in the games he placed bets on. The NBA has never said or done anything to its star players who they know bet on their games. We have had whole teams involved in point shaving because their players owed money for cocaine, but only porter and 1 ref have been banned. Because it give the appearance they are doing something or care.

      Why nba players or I should say NBA superstars have been betting on their own games finals included. Going back to the 50-60's all documented and released by the FBI. Every era the nba has had what would be gambling scandals if anyone cared but they don't. We have have full teams be involved in point shaving. The NBA fan is oblivious to what's going on. Even after refs getting caught. Sports betting isn't the problem it doesn't help but it's been in the nba from the start.

      Yeah, this kind of scheme would really only work if it involved a high-level rotation player that's going to get minutes no matter what. If the player has prop bets every night, then purposefully hitting your unders one out of every 10 times might not be noticeable. Plus, if there are a lot of people betting on you every night, having a few people make a ton of money off those unders also won't stand out so much.

    Also, those awards can in-turn change the salary of players, interfering with teams cap flexibility.
    They should get rid of media votes, for awards.
    They should just get rid of individual prop betting, at the very least on 2-way players.
