This is the "good" ending because Gehrman frees you from your contract, as promised, by killing you in this dream and sending you back to the "waking world" above. After you beat Murgo's Wet Nurse and kill Murgo your contract becomes null and void as you have defeated the source of the beastly scourge. Then Gehrman gives you the offer that he gives to every hunter that completed the contract. Gehrman sacrifices his opportunity to possibly escape the hunter's dream and instead frees you from it, so that you don't have to be trapped here forever like he is. That's why if you refuse he assumes that you are just overwhelmed by the hunt and tries to kill you by force. Its really touching. If he were a huge jerk he could just offer you his place and escape, but he would rather be trapped here forever himself than let that happen to you or ANYONE else. (as we see by the # of tombstones that he's done this countless times)
If you want to get technical, like all souls games, all of the endings are bittersweet. None of the souls games have a flat out good or bad ending from what i've seen. If the hunter "wants" to take Gerhman's place then the "bad" ending isn't bad after all.

The most beautiful ending to a game I've ever played. It was at the moment I saw my Hunter waking up from the Sun gleaming light into his face and slowly walking towards the light in relief that I realized I just finished a masterpiece.
Honestly it looks very peaceful in the day, and so on, the night ended, and the Hunter is an outsider so he doesn't need to be part of the hunt again like Eileen.
This is definitely the best ending for your character. He lives to see the sunlight, and he gets to escort the survivors and possible other Hunters who survived the night out of the country to continue to live. Definitely better than turning into a hentai squid monster baby or living a tormented life in the Hunters dream Though it does suck you don't get to have a final epic fight in this ending

People are arguing about whether this is the good ending, i don't think there is a good ending, there's two non-ends and a bad ending: a) He "kills" you, you leave the hunter's dream and essentially become one of the npc hunters, the moon essence still lives, the infant old one still searches for a surrogate and the night will loop again. b) You kill him and become the new Gehrman, you'll advise and train new hunters, continuing the hunt, the moon essence still lives, infant old one still searches for a surrogate and everything loops again. c) You kill the moon essence, everything stops looping, but you became the infant old one.

You wake up and become free from the neverending cycles/not dying aka being normal again Choice 2: You fight Gehrman AND set him free from his miserable "eternal task" and replace him afterwards Choice 3: You transcend into GodHood aka the squid-like figure which was the entire point of it all(at least, that's what you were suppose to first achieve), Seriously. I don't even think you can say any of those 3 are good or bad since there's good purpose in all Three of them. I don't know, I think they are bad endings if you see the cycle is the problem. The whole issue is that the trial does echo myth trials like the Green Knight where you put your life on the line, but you are accepting to die is the true heroism because it means you don't fear it, and thus you escape. If you don't escape the dream you are consumed and drowned in the violence and blood, it's like a chocolate muffin test, you eat one you then struggle not to eat the whole bowl you have failed self-control lul

I think people are basing what's considered the good and bad endings off of the two Dark Souls endings. To them, taking Gehrmen's place and renewing the hunt is akin to taking Gwyn's place in the Kiln and staving off the darkness. However, the ending shown here is nothing like the ending where you side with the serpents and welcome the dark in that game. Problem is that there is no 'good' or 'bad', *really*, in these games so it comes down to interpretation.
I still choose the ending where I die as the best. Although I did not ascend or end any nightmare, I just wanted to accept my humanity, live a meaningful life, and greet death as a friend. I think Fullmetal Alchemist got the best of me; it totally changed my mindset ever since I watched it. Like Edward, who chose humanity over his power, I guess that's why I choose that ending when I play Bloodborne, although it is sad that I did not save Gerhman, the poor old man with a kind heart. Still, I played all three endings. Bloodborne is one of the best games of all time for me.

Nar, I think it isn't, the point of willing to die means you broke free from the trap of the hunt. Gehrman couldn't break free, and those that don't break free are consumed. The point is, you are breaking free from the cycle. It's very similar to a lot of trials in myth even green knight, you accepting death is the victory and heroism.

you left the nightmare of the hunt and that's not someone who is good of heart would do, if i was that hunter i would stop the old man's suffering because he suffered so much compare to your character

Gehrman is one of the least evil antagonists ever. He only fights you be because he does not want you to give yourself to the Moon Presence and become like him. I can’t blame him. Being wheelchair bound and having to serve a great one while having to tell random hunters what to do sounds pretty boring.
I know I’m 7 months late, but this is my first play through. What happens if I refuse death, but get killed by the first hunter? Is that automatic first ending or do I get to try again until I beat him? Same question with the moon spirit what if I die trying to beat him do I get to try again
I think this is the best possible ending. You came to Yharnam to cure an unknown illness you have and are now healthy again. The beastly scourge is over for now and you wake up again in the real world without remembering any of the inhuman knowledge from the dream that no man should ever have. You can continue to live your life in peace.

I hate necromancy but here’s my point. In this end, you are a blade for hired, a another tool to be used. No feeling, no emotion. Even the doll know why she’s made, what is the reason you sharpening your blade for? In the second end where you take Gehrman place, you free him but unprepared, so you will keep waiting till another worthier comes, to take your place, to become more than what you could. So imho, becoming a great one is the best end.

To me this is the sad ending. Freeing Gehrman yourself in a display of utter self-sacrifice and taking on the duty of Host… that is an absolute, if sorrowful, good.
In my opinion, bloodborne is maybe a dream of a hunter of a complete different world from dark souls, since in dark souls fireweapons were never developed, and the Hunter dream from things from his world, in dark souls 3 the painter says that the painting is going to be a home, a cold, dark and very gentle place, and i dont think that she would paint the waken world of bloodborne because the sunrise doesnt seem "dark" and "cold", neigther "the Hunters dream" because it might be a little dark and cold, but its definitely not gentle, i think she would just keep painting a snowy world as always, just that this is the perfect one, one without beings to be rotten because she will only alow incorruptible people let in, like the ashen one or gael(rip) because they dont age and can not change his human form because the ashen one for example, has break the undead curse, since ash cant become hollow.

This is not the good ending. You just wake up in the normal world and cannot go back to the hunter's dream anymore. You are now the same as Eileen or Djura, who once could enter the hunter's dream. Also, the hunt still repeats by nights since the source of nightmare, Moon Presence, is still alive. Gehrman will want a new hunter to join the hunt.

You are just able to eternally die like other NPC hunters. Gehrman just dismissed you from your duty. However the nights continue. You will become a YOLO man from now on. Tomorrow you will have to drink a lot of blood to survive the hunts and finally turn into Father G. Ohhhhhh I'd rather die....... :p
The protagonist is a stranger, the world is not like Yahrnam if you had to travel there for the infusion. Castle Cainhurst already seems outside of the reach of the moon's influence, all the ex hunters you meet chose to stay there for a reason... and I like to think that Eileen as well left the place after realizing that she couldn't handle the hunt for hunters anymore, as you don't find her corpse. :)
Is it really the good ending? I think the Childhood Beginning ending is the "Good" Ending. Not only do you free Gerhman, but you also kill Moon Presence, the one responsible for everything going on in the Game, and replace it as a new Great One to lead mankind into a new age.
I'm really late but I still do think that there is no "good" or "best" ending to bloodborne. Each has its own sacrifices that you and others make in order for the outcome. Some say the third ending, where you are reborn as a great one, is the best, while others say its the worst. Frankly, it really depends on how you see it. Souls games often have a "suffering of the cycle" storyline which tells of an unending pattern which the player typically either becomes simply another part of, or breaks. The endings of replace Gherman and have Gherman free you both continue the cycle in their own way. The ending where you replace the moon presence COULD break the cycle in its entirety, but it entirely depends on how you act as a great one, which we simply can't tell/don't know. I like to imagine your character, having experienced the brutal existence of a hunter, wants to subject no one to that fate anymore, thus ending the cycle.
As one person once said, this game is just a big NO U. Gehrman: I will free you from this place Hunter: No u Gehrman: No u Hunter: No u Gehrman: If I kill you, you win.
The good ending is the Second. Because in the 1st you forget about everything, Gherman and the curse keep the loop. The 3rd ends with you surrending and giving What the great ones want. But in the 2nd you decide to keep fighting and maybe someday find a way to End the curse. One more thing, Gherman is useless, instead of telling everything he knows he keep making mystery, what makes everything harder.
Because you had to kill the nightmare, the nightmare being nergos wet nurse that's why when you beat nergo it says nightmare slain instead of prey slaughtered

The "bad" ending is when you basically accept Gehrman to free you from the dream and return you back to the living world. By doing so, you're allowing the cycle to repeat itself and have another hunter take your place.
But the implication to you becoming the new caretaker is that youre insane hence the wheelchair as that represents disability but not necessarily being crippled.

There's a point in the game where gehrman falls asleep or something and in his sleep He's crying and saying "I'm sick of this nightmare, master Willam, anyone, please release me" (not the exact quote, I forgot how it went lol) . And he still chooses to release you rather than himself.

Nar, I think it isn't, the point of willing to die means you broke free from the trap of the hunt. Gehrman couldn't break free, and those that don't break free are consumed. The point is, you are breaking free from the cycle. It's very similar to a lot of trials in myth even green knight, you accepting death is the victory and heroism.
Slaying Moon Presence looks like the real deal as an ending. It's going to take some while for me. Just like it slow,

Gehrman is one of the least evil antagonists ever. He only fights you be because he does not want you to give yourself to the Moon Presence and become like him. I can’t blame him. Being wheelchair bound and having to serve a great one while having to tell random hunters what to do sounds pretty boring.
I know I’m 7 months late, but this is my first play through. What happens if I refuse death, but get killed by the first hunter? Is that automatic first ending or do I get to try again until I beat him? Same question with the moon spirit what if I die trying to beat him do I get to try again

Things start getting complicated about dying in real life and dying inside a dream.
I think this is the best possible ending. You came to Yharnam to cure an unknown illness you have and are now healthy again. The beastly scourge is over for now and you wake up again in the real world without remembering any of the inhuman knowledge from the dream that no man should ever have. You can continue to live your life in peace.
To those who say THIS is the bad ending of the game: HOW EXACTLY...?!!! YOU, yes the person reading this comment, just spend HOURS & HOURS & HOURS & HOURS & HOURS & HOURS trying to beat this game...and Gahrman is offering you mercy by ending the Hunter's dream, how is that bad?

I hate necromancy but here’s my point. In this end, you are a blade for hired, a another tool to be used. No feeling, no emotion. Even the doll know why she’s made, what is the reason you sharpening your blade for?
In the second end where you take Gehrman place, you free him but unprepared, so you will keep waiting till another worthier comes, to take your place, to become more than what you could.
So imho, becoming a great one is the best end.
Because Gehrman is now doomed to spend eternity in a hellish dream.
The game really is just a side quest. Think about it, “wanna be a hunter lol”

Freeing Gehrman yourself in a display of utter self-sacrifice and taking on the duty of Host… that is an absolute, if sorrowful, good.

In my opinion, bloodborne is maybe a dream of a hunter of a complete different world from dark souls, since in dark souls fireweapons were never developed, and the Hunter dream from things from his world, in dark souls 3 the painter says that the painting is going to be a home, a cold, dark and very gentle place, and i dont think that she would paint the waken world of bloodborne because the sunrise doesnt seem "dark" and "cold", neigther "the Hunters dream" because it might be a little dark and cold, but its definitely not gentle, i think she would just keep painting a snowy world as always, just that this is the perfect one, one without beings to be rotten because she will only alow incorruptible people let in, like the ashen one or gael(rip) because they dont age and can not change his human form because the ashen one for example, has break the undead curse, since ash cant become hollow.

This is not the good ending. You just wake up in the normal world and cannot go back to the hunter's dream anymore. You are now the same as Eileen or Djura, who once could enter the hunter's dream.
Also, the hunt still repeats by nights since the source of nightmare, Moon Presence, is still alive. Gehrman will want a new hunter to join the hunt.

On choice 1: Do you wake up from the horrible nightmare?. No, I don't think so. You are just able to eternally die like other NPC hunters. Gehrman just dismissed you from your duty. However the nights continue. You will become a YOLO man from now on. Tomorrow you will have to drink a lot of blood to survive the hunts and finally turn into Father G. Ohhhhhh I'd rather die....... :p

The protagonist is a stranger, the world is not like Yahrnam if you had to travel there for the infusion. Castle Cainhurst already seems outside of the reach of the moon's influence, all the ex hunters you meet chose to stay there for a reason... and I like to think that Eileen as well left the place after realizing that she couldn't handle the hunt for hunters anymore, as you don't find her corpse. :)

Is it really the good ending? I think the Childhood Beginning ending is the "Good" Ending. Not only do you free Gerhman, but you also kill Moon Presence, the one responsible for everything going on in the Game, and replace it as a new Great One to lead mankind into a new age.
I'm really late but I still do think that there is no "good" or "best" ending to bloodborne. Each has its own sacrifices that you and others make in order for the outcome.
Some say the third ending, where you are reborn as a great one, is the best, while others say its the worst.
Frankly, it really depends on how you see it. Souls games often have a "suffering of the cycle" storyline which tells of an unending pattern which the player typically either becomes simply another part of, or breaks.
The endings of replace Gherman and have Gherman free you both continue the cycle in their own way. The ending where you replace the moon presence COULD break the cycle in its entirety, but it entirely depends on how you act as a great one, which we simply can't tell/don't know.
I like to imagine your character, having experienced the brutal existence of a hunter, wants to subject no one to that fate anymore, thus ending the cycle.
As one person once said, this game is just a big NO U.

Gehrman: If I kill you, you win.
The good ending is the Second. Because in the 1st you forget about everything, Gherman and the curse keep the loop. The 3rd ends with you surrending and giving What the great ones want. But in the 2nd you decide to keep fighting and maybe someday find a way to End the curse. One more thing, Gherman is useless, instead of telling everything he knows he keep making mystery, what makes everything harder.

Because you had to kill the nightmare, the nightmare being nergos wet nurse that's why when you beat nergo it says nightmare slain instead of prey slaughtered

The "good" ending is when you fight Gehrman and take his place as the new caretaker and chosen hunter by the Moon Presence. Killing Gehrman frees him from the curse of the Hunter's Dream. The "bad" ending is when you basically accept Gehrman to free you from the dream and return you back to the living world. By doing so, you're allowing the cycle to repeat itself and have another hunter take your place.
But the implication to you becoming the new caretaker is that youre insane hence the wheelchair as that represents disability but not necessarily being crippled.
