    Hey Group,
Sorry for the low quality vid. I was filming quickly as I wasn’t sure how long I’d be there before getting kicked out. This is a concept that has intrigued me for a while. If you have access to these or vessels like them down here in TX I’d be interested in hearing from you and filming more comprehensive vids in this subject.

Also, I know I’ve some misinformation in the vid. I’ll be more knowledgeable on these and have more time to film without pressure at a later time. Gimme a mulligan.

@@barelysurvival336 Yep not a good thing to drop the round ones from height. The poor bastard that would have done that would have been in a real bind because he would be standing up working the release mechanism. As for the others that would have been inside with him, they would be strapped in with a seat belt and free fall the 60+ feet to the water. You can imagine what would happen. The two floats on top are a self righting kit. This was brought about because of one that flipped upside down and drowned the entire crew inside. The diesel engine is a Westerbeke. These had an aux. water pump to pump water around the top ring located below the self righting kit in case of fire.

I’ve seen that pod for over a decade outside the CC Flea Market. Always wondered what it looked like inside. If it was me, I would ditch the top mount units (whatever those are), ditch the engine, and propeller. Weld a stovepipe on the top for air ventilation, rebuild the center console, take out the seatbelts and mounts, and bury that sucker halfway in the ground, leaving the top dome uncovered, turning it into an emergency storm shelter. Might do a new coat of epoxy inside and out after pressure washing inside and out. Add some type of electrical system and maybe fans or a cooling unit. Add a ham radio and transceiver. Deck it out with emergency supplies. Can’t really do cellars down in our part of TX, but it might work as a half buried shelter.

@2:50 - you mention Sump Pump - but isn't the boat waterproof in the first place? Why would you need a Sump Pump for something that water can't get into? I thought it's designed to float in water.

This is a Survival Systems International capsule as you say it is designed to be used by oil workers, your video shows Free Fall lifeboats and this is not one of them. it has a controlled descent via a winch and gently sets you in the water. it is USA made in San Diego it has the best safety record in the oil industry for saving life over 2,200 lives world wide.
How do i know this because i have worked for this company for 30 years. it sits in a Hold and Launch platform and you access it through the front doors. it is no longer made because it did not meet the current SOLAS regulations. however their are many still in service. you get in launch and wait for rescue from the stand by vessel. it is round because it makes it very strong, it has to be strong in case you get pushed under the rig and hit risers or legs.
    Your partner in Safety

At least in Europe Free fall ones are only used for low height applications, as Freighter and tankers, as i know not from high legs like stationary oilrigs.

.............Looks like a winning idea, folks..!! I have never seen one of those and didn't know they existed. As with any type of storm shelter, I would build a very sturdy steel frame work above ground and surround the entrance/escape hatch area to ensure that storm debris did not fall across it and block my ability to get out. Another great idea !!.......I like your new hat too.......

What an absolutely excellent point you make about using a decommissioned lifeboat buried underground as a shelter.
Very few modifications would be necessary, other than perhaps a steel framework to prevent crush damage from the weignt of the soil pressing down on the structure (which would depend on the depth of the bunker).
Given the inherently high structural strength of a free fall lifeboat, the extremely harsh working environment it's designed to operate in and the exceptional quality of it's materials and construction, and that it is annually, very strictly inspected and well maintained, they are considerably better than the thin steel culvert drain pipes which are sold as shelters!
For someone on a low budget that wanted to utilise the space beneath their feet to install their own shelter, cosy lounge, private space, etc, a lifeboat could be the solution, even if it's partially buried and using the excavated soil to conceal the portion above ground, giving it a grassy mound appearance!
As a result of your excellent suggestion, you have a new subscriber.

Round ones are mo use as boats but remove the motors give them back up power and lights with water food and air vents, buried underground they would make perfect cheap tornado/hurricane shelters .. for
A family or couple of families.
As Uv light is the biggest issue in the degridation of the shell burying protects them a hood. Of plastic DP membrane would protect against most penetrating rain/ soil water..
And being buried they would be insulated against extreem weather.. fire/ heat snow and noise ..as well as flying objects .

So good to see you posting. Great video. Not do-able for me but I can see the possibilities for people who could put the time in making this work. The knowledge to make this work is above my skill level and I'd think the shipping cost from Texas would probably double the cost if not more. It's a great idea, just to many barriers for me. This inspires me to look at ways of doing things in my area. Surely, there are items that can be modified so they work as something else close by me. Makes me think of the old saying ... there's more than 1 way to skin a cat! I understand the saying but always wondered - why would anyone skin a cat?!! ~Sherrie in South Carolina

Ok, just watched it. Two things....First, what a cool idea using one of those for an underground shelter. The shape of it lends itself to being very strong, as far as holding up to the pressures of being buried in the ground. Paint it with tar or, like you said, epoxy and it should be almost entirely corrosion resistant. I love it!
Second....I loved those small-box overlays you did here. Really cool editing skills, Bob. I love the things I'm learning from you! Video-wise and other-wise. Cheers, brother!

The design leads to its strength however I would not venture at dropping one of these into a pit and covering with dirt, it was not designed for that purpose. One would still have to spend thousands on a steel frame to support a concrete slab above the pod just to take the load of the dirt that would cover it in the end. Give me one of the "drop launch" lifeboats and it makes an excellent platform for a cruising vessel for the coastline. If one does not destroy its integrity by adding cheap and flimsy windows to the upper half it will probably survive a cat 3 hurricane without much damage.

Life pod cost minus what you can scrap the excess metal you want to strip away from the inside and out. Wonder how much you can get the cost down to. I live down here in the swampy part of Texas. I wouldnt bury it under the ground. I would turn it into a "hobbit house". That thing stripped down on the inside and covered in dirt should be pretty easy to keep cool and you dont have to worry about flooding problems.
