  • After several years of meticulous research and restoration, the home of Joseph Smith, the first prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his wife Emma, was dedicated by Church apostle David A. Bednar. Watch to see how the couple lived with their three children and conducted the affairs of a fledgling church in a modest four-room home.

I hope this October they announce the Church buying the Kirtland Temple from them. It would be so symbolic of many things.

I've been there, and they are not selling even though they can barely pay for the upkeep.

I’ve been hoping for that since I was a kid growing up near Kirtland in the ‘80’s.

Community of Christ leadership and members have made it quite clear that the historic House of the Lord in Kirtland is not for sale, and there is not intention to ever sell it. Hundreds of thousands of Reorganized Latter Day Saints have spent decades keeping the temple functioning as both a working building of community gathering and interfaith worship, and as a historical site open for all people of all faiths.

Good to see my old friend Community of Christ apostle Lachlan E. Mackay who is a noted historian, and a direct descendant of Joseph and Emma Smith. As a former member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a longtime member of Community of Christ, it is good to see leaders of both churches working together and literally walking together to keep the historic properties of the original 1830s church functioning for historical tours.

I really hope some of the members of the Community of Christ and other believers in the Book of Mormon can feel welcomed to come join with us. I hope one day for all of them to come.

The community of Christ excellent job of taking care of the Kirtland temple. The tour guides are excellent and the property pristine. Why fix something that isn't broken.

In my opinion, I actually don't mind at all if our brothers and sisters of the Community of Christ continue to own and maintain the Kirtland Temple. They are good people and deserve to cherish our shared history, too. We have hundreds of temples. They have only two, I believe. Possession of historical sites is not a competition.

So this house is a replica of the original, right? And the church actually owns the ground it’s on? I just didn’t know that we had any space in the Kirtland area. Cooperation is a good thing!
