Beloved Tokyo Japan Temple Opens to the Public Following Renovation

- The renovated Tokyo Japan Temple is opening its doors to the public for the second time in its history.
The temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be open for a limited time to host public tours. All are welcome to visit this sacred space of worship.
“This is a special opportunity to come and see the temple in the great city of Tokyo,” said Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “It is a sacred place for us because we consider it the ‘house of the Lord’.”
A Media Day kicked off open house events for invited guests on Monday, May 30, in Tokyo.

I’ve always loved how the church is so great about designing temples in a way that celebrates local “flavor” and culture. Even in the United States, every temple is unique to the area it is in and inspired by the local aesthetic. So amazing to see such rich Japanese art influence in the Tokyo temple. Not to mention the eternal blessings every temple provides.

I served my mission in Japan 1969-1970. My Dad served a mission there in 1949-1952. My Mom is Japanese and I was born in Nagoya. The site of the Tokyo Temple was the Church mission headquarters then, so it has been a sacred site for my family for 70 years. I returned to Tokyo with the US Air Force in July 1980, and was able to take my Japanese grandmother on a tour of the temple during the open house, led by Kan Watanabe, who was the missionary who baptized her and was head of Church translation services. We attended the temple dedication services, and later performed ordinances on behalf of Japanese ancestors of Chirch members. Some day I hope to return to Japan and visit all of the four temples, especially in Sapporo where I served half of my mission.
And now the children of the Japanese Empire have a place to worship and to get sealed once again. Congratulations to the saints in the Japanese Empire on reaching this milestone.
The church is killing it with all the temples and open houses. Such a cool time to be alive.

I served a mission in Japan , and watching this I am once again overcome with love for the Japanese people and am so happy many people will be able to tour the temple!

I can only imagine the excitement and happiness that the members in Tokyo are experiencing when they are finally able to attend the temple again after it’s renovation.
I always found that I need to remind myself on what a blessing it is to live so close to a temple when others have to sacrifice so much just to attend a temple outside of their home country.
The Lord is aware of this and all I can say is that the amount of new temples that are being announced each general conference is amazing and shows how much love the lord has for his children and the amount of work that needs to be done for the hastening of the work on both sides of the veil.
Very grateful to have been able to attend the temple at the end of my mission to Nagoya, 1981-82. Subarashi desu.

Great to see Brother and Sister Fukuda interviewed in regards to the temple. I was assigned to the Tokorozawa ward as a missionary and had many opportunities to be around them. They were and are great examples to me. I will never forget them.

It’s wonderful to see the Japanese Temple renovated and rededicated. Though I live in Australia I’m so grateful that our Japanese brothers and sisters have such a beautiful temple.

Thanks be unto Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ for their undeserved kindness and divine favor to the spiritual Israelites, faithful Latter-day Saints in Asia. What a beautiful temple! Whoever was in charge of interior design, kudos. Elegant yet conveys a feeling of submissive desire to walk as God would have us walk.
I loved attending the Tokyo temple at the end of my mission to Sendai in 1986. I love the Japanese garden and other Japanese culture integrated into this renovation.

oh how this made me weep. someday i would love to travel to the temples outside of the US. I have been to many in the united states. I actually found temple passport booklets at the church book store where you could put a stamp on the page of the temple you have visited, date it and write a short experience. It is a fun way to record when and where I have been. Someday I will get to travel to all the temples. I hope
People, please, become members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and together with your family come to temples. If you are not married, you will find a good spouse in the temple.
I went to that temple many times as a youth. It is beautiful and wonderful to be reminded of the spirit I felt there. It had extra significance serving there knowing the great importance Japanese culture places on honoring their ancestors. I’d love to go back and see it again!
Thank you for the beautiful tour. It certainly sparks interest in making a visit someday. I was there for the dedication on Oct 27 1980, and was blessed to see a convert member make her first visit to the temple on my last day as a missionary from Sendai in Japan the following Summer. My visits in 1981 and later in 2000 were hurried - I look forward to the chance to visit again, and to take in the exquisite design and workmanship at which the Japanese have no match.

I would find it hard to follow a religion based on an the Americas as a foreigner. Because I wouldn't know how it react by reading a book where Jesus visited the Japanese and then following that religion. So it makes me wonder how they feel about following a religion where Jesus visited the americas.
It's very likely that Jesus did visit ancient Japan and there are ancient records there. Along with visiting many peoples of many civilizations.
Born and raised in Japan I can tell you that since WW2 there has been less than 1% converted to a western religion and today? In 2022 it's hasn't changed one iota. It's still less than 1% and of that 1% a minute percent is Mormon. I've been to the Temple, hardly anyone is ever there. Don't delude yourselves that The LDS church is successful in Japan because they aren't. Most Japanese people have never even heard of the LDS religion....
But even the 1% are precious to God. Jesus taught in the parable of the Good Shepherd that He will leave the 99 and go and search and reclaim the 1 that is lost and carry that 0ne lost sheep back to the fold on his shoulders rejoicing! The Lord, God is giving a temple to that 1% who know and love Him and an opportunity to the remaining 99% to have a place to meditate and feel if his Spirit and to learn of Him. Temples are not just built for the current living children of God, but they are also built to serve God's children during the Millennium when Jesus Christ returns to reign on the earth. Then the temples will be open 24/7 where the saints perform saving ordinances on behalf of those who died without possibility of accepting the Gospel, therefor accomplishing the Heavenly Father's Plan of Happiness.
The 1% of Japanese who are Christians are a million people. Of that million, about 120,000 are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to the CJCLDS temple in Tokyo, there are temples in Fukuoka, in Sapporo, and another one being built in Okinawa. At any given time, there are some 600 ypung adult men and women serving as unpaid missionaries in Japan (as I did 50 years ago), the majority of them native Japanese, alongside missionaries from nations like the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Many Japanese missionaries also serve in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and Peru (which have large Japanese migrant populations). The Japanese missionaries become fluent in English, and many earn college degrees at the Brigham Young University campuses in Hawaii, Idaho, and Utah, and later work in international businesses. The non-Japanese misdionaries become fluent in Japanese, and many return to Japan to work. I served as a US Air Force attorney assigned to US Forces Japan for 3 years. I served as an interpreter for the Chief of Staff of the Japan Air Self Defense Force when he visited Strategic Air Command. Former missionaries have returned to Japan to work, such as Elder Stevenson in the video, including as attorneys, as bank presidents, in the US military, as university professors teaching Japanese history in the USA and New Zealand, and in graduate study at University of Tokyo prior to establishing the Japanese Law program at Columbia University, and serving as Dean of George Washington University Law School, as president of the University of Utah, of University of Washington, and Texas A&M University (the largest state-supported university in the USA).
