I love the videos, but this one does not make sense to me. I would just spray light with soapy water and agitate with brush, then clean water and either use compressed air or air dry. I do not see the need to do all that. Still a great video to watch!
I think Triumph was thinking the average person would just spray some good cleaning chemicals on the light and hose the dirt off as I have for years on my off road truck
Quite right, but imagine the trolling if one was to advocate spraying chemicals on a plastic headlight... and there is the weak link, if this was a glass light I would, like you, clean it that way, but as it's a soft plastic lens, easily susceptible to scratching and bloom, I think that gentle cleaning will hopefully make it last a little longer, specially with the price of replacements on these units.
Nice. I think they should have just made a separate removable headlight bezel with a grill on it, with a concealed set screw on the bottom, then we could just remove the bezel to clean without disturbing the headlight mount. Also, where's the black option for the 1200? But note to self, don't buy the headlight grill. Honestly, as a previous detailer, I'd have just used a boars hair brush and some wheel gel, it'll get in there good enough to get the light clean. ;)
I also have a Scrambler 1200 with the Triumph accessory headlamp grill fitted. Fantastic bikes, at six foot three inch and eighteen stone I can ride a modern classic without looking like a bear riding a tricycle 🤣. Cleaning isn't an issue, spray the headlamp with Muc Off or Silkolene Wash Off, let it soak for a short while then use an Oxford Big Softie Wash Brush with some warm water and a good car shampoo through the grill. Easy Peasy!!!
"bear riding a tricycle" Quote of the day Dave.! 🤣 Sounds like a bike made perfectly for your frame.. at just 6ft and a fsir bit lighter than you i still found it a touch too high.. not many bikes do that !
I’ve just fitted the Triumph accessory headlight guard to the Scrambler 900. This is fastened by two screws into a replacement bezel. This is easily removed for cleaning. Why they can’t do the same for the 1200 puzzles me. Great video as always 👍
Funny, the OE headlight cover accessory for the other liquid cooled Bonnevilles is removable with two screws attached to the headlight bezel. So Triumph clearly thought of this but promptly forgot when designing the accessory for the Scrambler.
They definitely didn't have their thinking caps on with that piece, eh? This would have been a good place to integrate the Sportster's brass bits with a thin bit of braze on the backing plate to fill in the cutoff wheel's thickness, although that would have been much work to dress the brass down square to fill the kerf from the wheel for very little return. If you had a similar shaped stainless bit you could have made a bracket sandwich, maybe even engrave 1200 or Triumph on the outside piece of the sandwich. Even if this is the final product, it's far more useful than the way Triumph sent it out the door. Take care, you two :)
Why didn't they have a clip on one side and a hinge on the other ? For the amount Triumph charge for genuine accessories you would think they could do better.
It would be funny if Triumph comes out with a new version of their headlight grill. If they are not watching your videos then they should be. Another case of a craftsman adding what engineers have forgotten. Good job Del. Penny should be an optometrist. Somehow I can see things more clearly in your videos than I can in real life. 😁🤓 Thanks and blessings to you both. ❤👍👍
Thank you so much Rick, that's very kind of you... I believe on one of the other models they do make the grill able to screw on independently to the light bezel without disturbing the headlight, so on this model I'm not sure why it was so badly thought out... but like you said, a simple fix! Have a great week there, be safe and well, D&Px
Yeah, you're right, in fact i think, when you look at many accessories in dealer catalogues today... then thumb through a few back copies of BSH from a few years ago... things start to look suddenly familiar... lol.. if you get my meaning.!
Not all designs of triumph parts are by triumph engineers, outsourcing today takes many forms, if companies could outsource your loo time so you don't have to go to the loo they would figure out how to do it.
Just read a comment on another vid where there was welding and this guy demanded that the welding flash be 'filtered' so as not to blind the viewers. Seemed serious (no emojis) I'm probably being trolled but... 🤣
It's a good solution. It may have been better cosmetically if you'd fabricated a joining piece with curves to match the screw head radius and placed it on the outside so concealing the the cut in the bracket.
Del, Vise Grips 10R. Bought mine in 1976. Had to change a starter solenoid in -8 C weather. Bracket kept twisting in removing the heavy gauge starter cables. Clamped the bracket with the Vise Grip 10R and removed the nuts with a 3/8 drive socket. My girlfriend said wow you're smart. I said no, if I owned the vise grips at the start it would have been a 5 minute job not a 1 hour shopping trip. HaHa. Nice outcome on the rock shield. Take Care, Ride Safe.
Well, bang goes my idea of using one of those things as a cricket-box, you've gone & made it all scratchy! (Does rather escape me as to why my trousers would need 'see-through' armour down there, but still : )xx
In my head was a piano hinge and a bonnet latch off a Willis jeep! But I've just run out of pianos and Jeeps and your solution is much nicer! Peas n loaf buddy ✌️🧡🤗
You do good work Del, nice, clean, mod. An alternative would be to slot the original mounting hole on on the screen bracket to form a hook. That way you could just slightly loosen the headlight mount screws and slide the screen up and off.
Good thinking mate, trouble is even if you crack the headlight mounting bolts off, a 1/8th of a turn to do what you suggest, the headlight aim will drop out of alignment, which is maybe no big shakes, but having to realign it in daylight is gonna get a ballache in the end!
Simple and elegant solution. There certainly is pleasure in being able to look at even a mundane item, and tweak it so that it makes your day to day living with it, easier! Nice 🙂
Nice on Del. I have had this set up on my scrambler to, for some time now. Wow, what a great idea, but I also decided on using a HID set-up instead of the standard halogen bulb. Plug it all in, and no worries for 50k hours. As always, Del great ingenuity x
Thanks Marc, I remember HID kits... fitted one on my first Gen 1 Hayabusa, made the headlight pattern look like an angel you were chasing along the road... maybe my Guardian Angel?! Have a great week mate, D&Px
A J W D my friend Oh by the way in our household my wife tells me " Another job well done" that's exactly what you do in every video love you Bro ride safe.
That would be cool, but somehow if it is, it'd be their idea and patented..lol! Good to hear from you as always buddy.. thanks for your loyal support. D&Px
Hi Harold. Yeah, on the legend (and the rest of the Thunderbird series), the two piece air box needs to be totally removed, and for that you need to slide the carbs out first... great for dealer labour profits i guess..lol!
Gets the job done. I think the engineers might have been having a moment that day. Shame that someone has to spend the $$$ only to have to do something like that to it but, it is what it is.
HI mate.. So good to hear from you again, we hope you're keeping safe and well, and still enjoying the Dyna and the BMW.. Take care and stay in touch. D&Pxx
Great video brother !! Outstanding job ! what a clever way to solve that issue. Btw those camera angles and close ups are sick ! good editing brother makes it detailed. Bike is looking awesome brother !! Keep up the great work !!! Stay safe guys cheers from New york !!!!!! 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Thanks so much for your kind words of support, 👍 We're glad you enjoyed the video, simple solution and now i can whip it off in a few seconds for cleaning. Have a great week both of you and keep safe brother.. D&Px
Well done Dell, off subject I sent this message to some snowflake at Nats Knacker sack or something like that in your support…… Bollocks seems to get mentioned by you a lot here, that’s probably because of what you’re talking, regardless of what you think of his practices at the end of the day Dell boy and Penny have contributed a hell of a lot of time, passed on great knowledge and given thousands of people help such as myself with his skills, seems to be sour grapes on your behalf, before you turn on me I’ve been there with the spray painting issues but just leave Del Boy to what he does best and why interfere? I pass on my Music teaching skills on you tube and always get knowall comments but just ignore them, Dell is different so get over it, I’m glad that this is your last post on this matter and not Dells and long may he keep contributing, he is a top man .
Simply magnificent fabrication on your part, Del! Those blokes at Triumph should watch your vids to learn a thing or two! Hope you both are well there… 🏍👍🏍
Could you not have just bought a few detail brushes? It would only take an extra 10 seconds while you're cleaning the bike
I love the videos, but this one does not make sense to me. I would just spray light with soapy water and agitate with brush, then clean water and either use compressed air or air dry. I do not see the need to do all that. Still a great video to watch!
To be honest I’d just use a soft detailing brush through the mesh to clean the headlights 🤷♂️
I think Triumph was thinking the average person would just spray some good cleaning chemicals on the light and hose the dirt off as I have for years on my off road truck

Me too mate.. doesn't make sense aye !
A fine example of shop fabrication! I do like the "industrial" fastener look as well. Great job!
Funny, the OE headlight cover accessory for the other liquid cooled Bonnevilles is removable with two screws attached to the headlight bezel. So Triumph clearly thought of this but promptly forgot when designing the accessory for the Scrambler.
I think you're right Louis !

Because with soap 🧼and a clean paper you could clean it 😂
But good job Sir
Why didn't they have a clip on one side and a hinge on the other ? For the amount Triumph charge for genuine accessories you would think they could do better.

Sometimes, strangely, these big companies need the little guy to do their thinking for them. Nice job Del.

Ha ha.. True !
Much simpler to just cut the guard's eyelet to an open-ended spanner shape, no?
But then you'll Still have to back off the headlight mounting bolts quite a bit and upset the headlight aim as it will inevitably move !
Like it
Excellent idea, perfectly executed. Better than factory, how satisfying. Thanks for showing, Günter/Nürnberg
Just read a comment on another vid where there was welding and this guy demanded that the welding flash be 'filtered' so as not to blind the viewers. Seemed serious (no emojis) I'm probably being trolled but... 🤣
Oh dear... I think you rather are mate!
It's a good solution. It may have been better cosmetically if you'd fabricated a joining piece with curves to match the screw head radius and placed it on the outside so concealing the the cut in the bracket.
So what would you then screw the screws into ?

(Does rather escape me as to why my trousers would need 'see-through' armour down there, but still : )xx
A nice little touch and totally agree on the cleaning part, looks great
Thanks buddy!
It's a shame that there wasn't a way to have a thinner kerf where the brackets were cut. All the same, a creative solution. Well done!
In my head was a piano hinge and a bonnet latch off a Willis jeep! But I've just run out of pianos and Jeeps and your solution is much nicer!

Now that would be a heavy duty solution.. i can see that you worked in a Power Station Sir...lol! ️🧡🤗
@Delboy's Garage Haha, yes I'm back at the power station . Shares in Duct tape are at an all time high! 🤗🧡🧡👍

Thanks buddy.. You too.👍
Good reminder on the thread lock
Excellent mod Del - I agree essential for this accessory 👍
Thanks Richard, I think so too!
Yes very practical addition nice job
Thanks Gerard !
If Triumph had thought of it, Del, they would be charging another £30.00 for it!! Count your blessings!!!🤣
Ha, you're not wrong there mate !
Nicely done! Hopefully the next iteration of the cover will show they have taken this on board and it is modified to allow for easy removal!
That would be cool, but somehow if it is, it'd be their idea and patented..lol! Good to hear from you as always buddy.. thanks for your loyal support. D&Px
Trademark it!
Wasn't it a Triumph that you had to remove the carburetor to change the air filter? Daft doesn't begin to describe it!
Exactly.. but as with many accessories, we're lucky they even fit properly in the first place.. at least this was just an upgrade for convenience !
don't clean it
Only the headlight so I can see where I'm going lol
Took 5 mins into the video to say Yeah I Got it Now, Good Clean Job
Brilliant
Another great fabrication dell, you could patent those brackets, regards Mike Derbyshire,

Thanks Del, an elegant solution and some nice tips in the video, that you may not have been meaning to show but useful to know, nevertheless.

Perhaps they wanted you to come up with a solution 😉
Clever upgrade, job well done young man-- hi to PP 👍x
Thanks buddy👍
Good job Del.

Nice work! Excuse my ignorance, what does the heating of the metal and dropping it in oil do? Rust protection?
Yes it does mate !
