@@percival7754 I am desperately seeking a BBC documentary series on the history of Ireland. I came across this, but it isn't the one I seen. That documentary was made in the 1990's and showed the many atrocities against the Irish, especially what Oliver Cromwell did to them.
@@percival7754 I can't remember the name of the one I saw in the 90's that showed everything, which included the British slaughtering 20,000 unarmed Irishmen at a peace treaty signing that the British set up and told the Irish that no weapons would be brought. I thought it was David Attenborough, who narrated it, but I was wrong. I found it once with much time spent looking for it, but can't now.
This is brilliant since I'd oft wondered how the Old English (Catholics) had become associated with the native nationalist sentiments. This explains it perfectly. Thanks posting this series, it's really enjoyable.

The 'Flight of the Earls' was not a desertion. They hoped to return with help from the Continent. This entire presentation is a twisted apologia for British colonialism, always calling into question Ireland's right to nationhood. Ireland was as much of a nation before the English arrived as any nation in Europe. Other trappings of nationhood came later everywhere.
This is an old series but with Irish historians involved as I understand it. I thought it was quite balanced. I’d look at a more recent history of Ireland that might be nearer to the truth. .
@@johngilmore6688 wasn't much point in coming back without an army. He forgot to mention that Hugh O'Neill had been summoned to court in London, to certain execution, This was significant in their decision to go to Europe for help.
The orange marchers at the time that this documentary was made seem so much more genteel and respectable than now. The parades look a lot more like a bit of fun and a real family day out, rather than the thuggish power-shows they are now. Shame.
Irish Catholic here and the bonfires do seem like a great night to celebrate and I would go if they weren’t full of anti Irish bigotry and burning of flags, weird to look at when yer from the south.
The comic irony of both evangelists preaching against religious bigotry only then to immediately launch into the favourite part of their speech of the long enduring evil of Roman Catholicism.
re: the Nov 1641 Portadown massacre.... this happenned AFTER atrocities Committed by English settlers. Also unsealed British intel agency documents prove that it is British intel that usually carry out the initial atrocities. "Historian Nicholas Canny suggests that the violence escalated after a failed rebel assault on Lisnagarvey in November 1641, after which the settlers killed several hundred captured insurgents. Canny writes, 'the bloody mindedness of the settlers in taking revenge when they gained the upper hand in battle seems to have made such a deep impression on the insurgents that, as one deponent put it, "the slaughter of the English" could be dated from this encounter'.[30] In one incident after this battle, the planters in Portadown were taken captive and then killed on the bridge in the town (see the Portadown Massacre)."
This history after British occupation is the equivalent with the Nazi's The English were the Nazi's and the Irish were the Jews. Not as violent as the Nazi's actions towards the Jews but equal to the ethnic discrimination/cleansing, and the religious persecution/discrimination of the English.

+GIOVANNI1955C Whilst not excusing the atrocities committed by Cromwell's forces against the Catholic Irish, your analogy is just plain wrong. The war fought by the Cromwellian Puritan army against the Catholic Irish was, first and foremost, a war of religion. Atrocities were committed against Old English Roman Catholics as well as Gaelic Irish Roman Catholics - race didn't come into it. The Nazis murdered the Jews because their perverted race theories deemed the Jews to be racially inferior to the Aryan race, it had nothing to do with their religion. I love the wat they use the phrase "Lands that were now forfeit to the English crown". Surely he means lands that were taken by force.
Stolen.
