I love your kit! I am a Yank, but I love the British Ruck Sack, so I bought one because they are bomb proof. I am 63, so the extras are necessary for me. Gone are the days of sucking it up when I was a young U.S. Marine! Lol!😅 One request I have is would you be willing to do a video on setting up the kit you have and doing an over nighter? I am planning this spring to do a short backpacking trip because my diabetes has rendered my feet problematic for long trips. I always have loved getting out into nature and camping. I lived in New Zealand for 10 years and enjoyed the bush, but it kicked my butt even when I was much fitter due to the elevation gains just to find a good campsite! I want to continue day trips now that I live in Arkansas, USA and I am looking for some ideas and yes some motivation! I enjoyed your video and it is nice to find a like minded fella who loves to backpack and camp! Thanks.😊
Thanks for your kind comments. I have over 600 videos but here is a link to one where I am setting things up. th-cam.com/video/frGgephiMJY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S4HUPOuOgVYvPkCZ
Thanks for this Alan. I have seen you on many of Mark's (MDM) videos and have, just tonight, come to your channel. I have found this video very informative and interesting! 1😁
I have used military kit professionally and for camping/wildcamping and it’s the best about very strong and durable like you said you would have to go to some lengths to break it. Good video mate
Spooky! At first I thought you had captured my Bergan and contents, but plus a foam mat and minus the chair. 😀 Just another regular user of Military surplus gear for woodland and wild camping, and a new subscriber. 👍
Good one. I've started using my old Berghaus Cyclops Roc again. Lightweight rucksacks like my Osprey Talon are good but sometimes they just don't feel robust enough.
Similar to me, 66L in the winter and the 45L in summer. It's mainly the sleeping bag that tends to take up all that extra space. I do have an ultra light 35L bag which I used for 2 nights in the Peaks with Marc, got it to 10kg all in!
Friendly reminder that a shitbin (Plce rocket pouch) will hold 15x440ml cans... 😂🥃🥃🥃 Ipk sheet fits nicely into the picket where your frame insert sits, I also have a jute camo screen in there, bonus padding for you as well.
I have the long and short Bergen. I have a engineers bag too. I am going to be in rough places so I need the durability. I keep the set as grab and go. But the Bergen bags are for multi day use. I use an Alice style bag for day trips and overnights.
I have always found it interesting how people approach the three schools of "camping/outdoors activities". Bushcraft, hiking and prepping. I think there is a lot to be learned by taking ideas from each of these schools of thought when building your own kit. I can see that you take heavily from the bushcraft side of things, which in no way am I criticizing, but I still say it's a good idea in general to keep an eye on what's going on in the other schools as new ideas come to light and new kit come available.
Hello mate ! ..hope all is well bro !!. That looks like a top Bergen !! I'm not ultralight either mate.. in fact a bit of a fat bar steward !! lol Great review of a sweet choice of kit Have an awesome weekend my friend !
Hey Jim/ Allan .. I have the 100 liter dpm Bergen and I too full it to the max if I,m doing an overnighter.. and as you say it,s lighter when you leave a camp the next morning . So forget ultralight . ..👎... . thanks for sharing ATB.. Sam 👍
Great video as usual, question, could you possibly do a video where you do an overnighter only using x military kit that can be purchased in the UK. Thanks
Great video mate, explained what you have and why...love the emphasis on low cost. Are you a closet Yorkshire man? Lol Army surplus is cheaper, heavy duty but heavy.....
I like your logical reasoning conversation though this one could do with two improvements 1/2 I quite like your facials expressions when you talk, it’s just bit more entertaining and engaging so bit more close up would have done wonders 2/2 a little more settled scene like pitching up chair and making a cuppa on stove in the opening before going into intro. Still very nice 👍🏼
I must admit, I often have the camera too far away. I could of made more of a scene of it but it was just a basic video, answering a subscribers question. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍
I'm sorry your kit bag is to heavy of a lot of people but if your happy with it that's fine , like you say you know where your going and it's only a short distance your travelling. The ex army surplus trade is still good value for anyone who likes going camping.
I have one of those, but made a few changes. They work fine... An you are right about the "ultralight" stuff. People dont know until they use it... May I recommend a collapsible (silicone) blader of 2 or 3 Liters?
I heard the price increases with a lot of military gear is Ukraine. I would like a German military groundsheet, but I'm not paying thirty quid for one!

Dry bags if conditions need it. You stay safe out there. 😉👍

Military gear is the logical choice for durability and price, great video al...
Thanks George.
Nice explanation, JB.
I don’t use my SB Bergen half as much as I should.
Nice kit and yes don’t go far with that much weight unless you train for it…Have fun stay safe.

Thanks. I will have a look.🙂
Great video.
I find the side packs attach to a waist belt and work well as a large pouch or foraging bag
That's a great idea! 👍

Welcome along. I camp with Marc quite a bit, so some of my video you will of seen the camp, just not from this angle. 😁
Great video sir helps out beginners like me to know what to look for thanks.
Glad to help 👍
Great video. Really like that pack. Cheers from Cape breton Canada 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching. JB.

Thanks for that. I have used the British kit in "various rolls" and although it tends to be on the heavy side, it has never failed on me.
@@jim-bob-outdoors yeah exactly mate built to last.

Welcome along and thanks for the sub. The is a lot of advantages to keeping it simple. 👍
Great video thanks. Nappy bags are alot cheaper than zip locks, might save a fellow cheap skate a couple of quid!
Very true!
Good one. I've started using my old Berghaus Cyclops Roc again. Lightweight rucksacks like my Osprey Talon are good but sometimes they just don't feel robust enough.
I think the old one were just built better.
Awesome vid chap, I love removeable bag pouches and mollie, half my kit hangs off my bag, I sound like Heidi when I'm walking through the woods lol.
😂 I can imagine, I bloody hate things making a noise on the outside.
@@jim-bob-outdoors In some ways I am a typical woman, doesn't matter how big my bag is I still need more space 🤣

Good point! 👍
I use my bergan for collecting fire wood, it gets thrown around and its bomb proof.
I think mine will out last me. 😁

A thorough loudout vid that Allan, great to hear your approach to packing your kit. And what a lovely photogenic bit of woodland that is!
Glad you enjoyed it, not filmed here before. I had a problem finding a dry spot locally, so muddy everywhere.

Yes we can always get new ideas from others. This is my basic kit, but the is plenty of other gear depending on the situation.
Good afternoon, Allen. Thank you for the information. Are you going to have a rainy weather camp using your F2 tent? Have a great day.
I have done a couple, I am sure the will be others.
Fantastic video. Lots of good common sense advice. You don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy the outdoors. 👍
Thanks 👍
Nice one Allan, love my bergens, can shove a load of gear in and as you said it will not break..... ATB Chris.
Absolutely 👍
Thank you. Interesting. I like the aproach you have about the material you choose.

i hv never owned a backpack that was too big,, BUT i hv owned plenty that were too small 😬
Yep, nothing worse than packing your gear and you cant get the last couple of bits in. 😁
I can only dream of being able to carry that lot 😅😅😅
I still have too much whatever bag I use 😂🤣😆

Yes I can do that, I have done one before.
As younger man once upon a time I can imagine having the bag on the floor and lying on top of it to my arms in and rolling over to stand up 😂
I have to careful putting a bag on now, my left shoulder is damaged. Ok once its on though. 👍
@frogmaster83 yes rotator cuff pain is no joke but it's great your still enjoying your self great kit they need more wild camp grounds in the uk

Yes, plenty of options out there without spending too much money.
Noticed no additional clothes, not even a spare pair socks or pants?
Depends on the amount of time I am out or the time of year. I was focusing on equipment though. 👍
Spare boxers and socks are smock kit 🤘😀

Yes a lot of old gear in storage is being given to other countries to use, rather than it going onto the retail market.
Summer bag: 10Kg (11Kg luxuries) Winter bag: 13-14Kg (15Kg luxuries) for one night.
I was that sort of weight, but since I got old and ill, I have to have more comfort.
Man after my own heart, cheap, robust and replaceable
