I was the puppeteer for this exact same puppet. This was the one held by the mother Ewok, performed by Katie Purvis, daughter of the late, great Jack Purvis (IYKYK). I showed up on set and was presented with what was basically a cast foam shell with the fur on it. But the interior of the head wasn’t fitted out as a puppet. All that was inside was a wire going between the two ears. You can actually see this when they show inside the head. It’s still there. So I quickly made up a thumb grip and finger grip from gaffer tape and glued them both inside the mouth. That way I could get it to move a little, as though he was sucking or pursing his lips. I used the wire between the ears to help subtly squish the head by pulling down on it with one of my fingers, to give the illusion of his cheeks flexing. You can also at see all that going on if you look closely in the final movie.
I don’t remember the wires coming out of the arms but they were probably used to pull them back.
I glued the same type of grips into Nippet, the brown Ewok too.
To perform him I had to lay flat on my back to keep out of shot.
Surprising and surreal to see it all these decades later. Thanks for showing this. I’d like to meet this little guy again. 😎
What is this Wokling's name?
At the time, it didn’t have one. Grey baby I guess? Non idea what it ended up being called… 🤔
Ewok puppeteer?! Instant subscribe 🤣
@HunterThinker And Nien Numb, as well as quite few Muppets over the years!
Qu? @thequinzone Would you know any of other Ewok performers whom might have attended glorious,
'Save the Rose Theatre',
StreetParty event April 1989?!?
Stephen Lane is an absolute treasure. I think Prop Store is so successful because he honestly is just as much a "movie prop nut" as any of his customers and it's not just a business to him. I hope he lives long and prospers.
Adam talked about his theory on why Lucas didn't want to do that many Wookiees, but Lucas has talked about that from a story point of view. Now, it's possible he just made up the story retroactively, but what he said was that he wanted a more primitive society for the heroes to visit, but he had established Chewbacca as very tech-knowledgeable and so he didn't want to roll that character development back. So he came up with a new species to fill that gap.
That's the story I've heard for years. My favorite trivia about Ewoks is that they are not named in the film! Yet, everyone knew about Ewoks, even before the film came out! #Marketing
I think George was good at making excuses for bad decisions.
The story about the Wookies being mostly killed off or turned into slave by the empire. Was removed from the first movie's script to save time and remove the slavery plot. Mark Hammil has spoken about it in and old interview back in 1978.
I thought every star wars fan knew that.
I heard he just wanted to sell more toys to children and thought that space teddy bears would fit the bill.
I remember watching the Starwars holiday special the one time it aired... I'll bet George & staff all suspected a major backlash if they revisited the wookie planet.
My favorite uncle took me to see ROTJ in theaters when I was, well, young. I feel like one of the few people who loves Ewoks. They were scrappy little savages. Using guerilla tactics to take down enemies with much higher tech weapons. Some of my favorite scenes of all the Star Wars movies is watching AT-STs being destroyed by Ewoks. A bunch of huge logs tripping one up, and the best was two well timed giant logs swinging and smashing the head/cockpit of one. I'm not apologizing, I'm team Ewok.
Yep, I also saw ROTJ in theaters as a kid and I'm team Ewok too. Recently got black series Wicket and Paploo figures. They weren't teddy bears, they killed and ate stormtroopers!
its amazing how well it looks after all these years, you could shoot a short film with it
Not sure if its useable as a puppet. Maybe a static creature. I would imagine the inside would be very fragile and would crumble if any hand went up there.
@@troy4340 Im sure creative people would find a way of not only protecting it but to use it in a film
@@jmg2023ie Or replicating it in more durable materials.
"Introduced after the Ewok" priceless 😆
You can tell he really didn't like that
As a professional fabricator, I will now only refer to deterioration as "puppet frostbite" XD
I have found that oil helps old rubber that's gone hard. I only tried vegetable oil but I can't say what oil would work best or how it lasts over time.
I’ve been calling the rust on my truck “patina” for years.
Lol, that's the baby Ewok that hides his cute little face frightened when C3PO makes a loud explosion noise as he briefs all the Ewoks on what they're up against 😄
The video turned out very atmospheric and informative. The Ewok child is simply adorable!
Fascinating Adam and Stephen. I will always remember being down away as a child, watching the speed bike chase and then seeing the Ewoks in ROTJ. So many memories. Happy memories.
Ewoks are one of the scariest creatures in the Star Wars universe. Soon after the empire landed on the Endor forest Moon, they started picking the storm troopers off one by one using their camouflage and terrain knowledge. They would also eat them and display their partially eaten bodies to their comrades to cause fear and their enemy.
And consider: They caught two humans, two droids, and a wookiee in one of their nets - whatever that trap was originally meant for, I do NOT want to meet it!
Love the stephen lane episodes of his collection o. Your channel!! Keep em coming Adam and crew!
I once read an internet comment that said, "you can tell how old someone was when they watched Star Wars. Grownups hated the Ewoks. Kids loved them." I agree with that sentiment. I loved the Ewoks as a kid. They were adorable, and I still love them.
I watched the movies so much as a young kid (in the late 80s; born 83), that even I recognized that baby Ewok due to being on screen!
I'm bummed that the Ewoks don't really have the love that I have of them... Which as I typed that, Adam gives an example of that! 😅
My Star Wars upbringing was all recorded off then having been aired on TV (mom lovingly sat there and edited out the commercials ♥️), and I had "Caravan of Courage" as well. Not sure if we had the other one, but I presume not since I can't even reveal what its title is 😊
Great showcase of this baby Return Ewok, thanks! I would like to see a new TV series or movie with Ewoks again in major roles, back on Endor.
Ewoks walked so Grogu could hover
I always enjoy when Adam visits The Prop Store. Wonderful. Thank you. 💙🌻🌲🌟🌲🌻💙
Great show and tell again guys!
Adam Savage: Ewok Proctologist
"Steve asked me if I wanted to meet Adam Savage, but this is not what I was expecting!"
ROTJ or RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) is still my all-time favorite STAR WARS episode!
Gross toes or not, that is one adorable little critter!
2:52 I thought they smelled bad on the outside
You are one fortunate bastard !!! Well done Adam, this was great
It's quite cool. It was in a displaycabinet opposite the postroom at Pinewood when I last worked there earlier this year.
I've always had a special love for Ewoks, especially when I was little. At that time I believed that indeed I WAS an Ewok, or had been one. I had a small spot on one ankle that was the slightest bit hairier than the rest of my legs, and I believed that was where I was held as an Ewok, when I was dipped in a cauldron of whatever the liquid is that turns an Ewok into a human.. I remember having an Ewok comic book that had some Ewok writing in the speech balloons. I swear I was able to read what was written there as if it were in English. Also, when I was around second grade and living in Italy, my grandmother, who lived in the US, had made me a full-body Ewok costume for Halloween. It was amazing! I wore it to Venice for Carnivale, and have a picture I took with a couple that were dressed like bears. Love some Ewoks!
This comment is gold.
I have never clicked so fast
The Ewoks were always my favorite!! When I was a girl, I remember also loving The Ewok Adventure with the little girl and the blonde curly hair. Now that I'm much older, I wish like crazy I had studied art in college instead so I could make props. I'm making up for lost time at the moment.
Is everything going digital you think or will there always be a place for people aspiring to play around with paper, clay, wire, and cloth?
There will always be a place for practical. Consider that not everything needs to be used for a show or film. Consider theme parks, stage, live performances, kids events, conventions, cosplay, collectors. I personally love creating things that capture the "magic" of seeing someone's reaction right in front of you. Never discount the value of that! Never stop creating things. Never stop making! The fact that you are doing it now is amazing :)
@@pandapropsncostumes Thanks!
People always gave me crap about liking the Ewoks. They said the story was dumb. I thought they were cool. That would be so cool to own.
Thats so cool . Hey your wearing the nostromo crew shirt🤘😎🤘
Eeechi wawa! Was reminded the other day no one says “ewok” in the movie, it’s only in the credits 😂
As impressive as an Ewok puppet might be, I think the most impressive feature of the video is Stephen's hair.
Adam built him an acrylic box you can seal and fill with argon……!!!!!!
4:20 Stephen mentioned that it’s in a “UV filtered case” with “no natural light”, but I wonder if there is artificial light *inside* of the case? All LEDs emit some amount of UV light, and other types of lighting can emit UV light as well. I wonder if this is the cause of the color having changed on the puppet.
“And the Empire will be defeated by Ewoks.”
Nate Bargatze has entered the caht...
Fabulous‼️
E-Wok : Wook-E
Chewbacca is a Wookie because George didn't think he'd get a chance to make all three movies (and the Wookies didn't show up until the third). When he did get the chance he figured he already had a wookie so he cut them in half and reversed the name. His words, not mine.
Ewoks are the little Wooks; Wookiees are the big Wooks...Somewhere out there must be a planet where human-sized Wooks live.
Glad he has these and not Disney
I dont like the Ewoks either, but BUT this is pop culture history and i love this video to see things like these still excist and people enjoy this kind of things.
"Puppet frost-bite"!!!😆😆😆
Stuart Freeborn had three sons. All died before he did, in 2013, aged 98.
when you think about it, ewoks are just forest jawas.
Excellent, thank you! Weird question... does Stephen still own the Vader lightsaber? I've always wondered how heavy it is, normal Microtechnical flashes are rather light but the top of that looks rusty, almost like it's steel, so unlike regular camera parts!
Always liked the Ewoks since 1983
Ewoks are Carebears who lost their way and became junkies & alcoholics!
Noooooo!!... Lol good one!
They're fuzzy gremlins that want to eat you.
Carebears gone feral!
@@patricksanders858 Ewoks are Pygmy Sasquatch.
Original Ewok puppet and Stephen Lane (left)
he looks just like he did in the movie..i always said lucas had a wild mind to create all this stuff
I remember as a kid, when I saw the ewoks, I had never before rooted for the Imperium.
Smart kid. I hated the Ewok character. Lazy writing imo.
I WANT EWOKS! there are many of them that are soooooo COOL!
The world's first ewok colonoscopy, right here on youtube
i met one of the actors! he owns a funko shop, sadly didnt have any ewok ones though
Is that a Christopher Ward C9 Harrison GMT that Stephen is wearing?
Imagine at auction the price of something unique with a cinematic story... ufff
FYI…Return of the Jedi was released in 1983. That puppet is over 40 years old. (And now I feel old.)

Ewoks are my favorite Star Wars characters
Good to see Adam and Jamie back on screen together.
If he is screen matched it would be nice to see a still shot of him in the movie.
Per the comments of Mike Quinn, the puppeteer, its the one being held by a mother ewok.
@outlanderfrog thank you
i had to watch the ewoks scenes in return of the jedi here on youtube but its so hard to identify this one. There is a clip called 3CPO telling stories to the Ewoks and i think this Ewok is one of the kids, it appears at 1:20 in the video on the bottom left side of the screen. Its either that or its the Ewok puppet hanging in the background far away at 0:47 but i think not.
According to puppeteer Mike Quinn in the comments, it's the one being held by its mother.
@@outlanderfrog its standing in front of another Ewok, so i guess its the mother. Its not on her arms.
@DanSharp-j5h Yeah, after watching, i think you're correct about 1:20. The color has probably shifted, so maybe Mike misremembered.
@@outlanderfrog wait, there is another baby on the right side of the acreen which is held by its mother on the arm, hmm. To me it looks closer to the one on the left but im not an expert and wasnt there, could be wrong. i think the one on mothers arms looks more petite, the one in the adam savage video |ooks bigger, fuller face, wider nose etc., also the white fur around the eyes looks like the one on the left side
Very recognisable
Wow! Warwick's a lot smaller than I thought....
Stuart Freeborn was one of George Lucas’ “storytellers” that brought the Original Trilogy to life.
Seeing this makes me wonder how many Star Wars props were owned by the people that lived in the houses that have burned down in the last few days.
It's a good possibility that some significant props - Star Wars and otherwise - were lost. The latest Stuff Dreams Are Made Of podcast episode goes into detail on one high-end collector's experience saving his most prized items (including an X-wing) under threat of the Sunset fire.
My mother gave me a plush ewok. I still would have it if someone didn't steal my box of childhood toys when I was moving.
Kind off of topic but I wanted to ask you about workshops or at least other commenters.
How do you get a space to use as a workshop. I am married but my wife only like likes to rent houses having no
desire to purchase a place of our own. Is it better to try to buy a space or rent one. When trying to buy what should
I look for.
When is Stephen coming to the cave, after aaaaall these years!?
If Mr. Savage is on here, can he visit Skywalker ranch to see if items from ROTJ, like one of those "giant" mouse droids, Amanda Noar's costume, and/or a Mon Calamari helmet, are still intact, if he pleases?
For what it's worth, an apparently-intact Mon Calamari helmet is featured in Brandon Alinger's 2014 Star Wars Costumes book.
Does anybody know anything about the A New Hope poster/print framed on the wall? It looks amazing.
Mark Raats, 40th Anniversary. Original painted artwork on the left.
So so cool 😊🫡
ship it to Tom Spina , for his next project !
I would imagine there is a finite lifespan of props and prop collecting.
Do any archivists get nervous every time Adam touches his face with the gloves on? Would that not risk transferring oils etc?
❤❤❤
Great video sir ❤
shall i rock him ... brilliant 🥰
Sorry Adam but Lucas didn't revisit planet of the wookies because of starwars holiday special. I know Adam & everyone are Blessed to forget it., but I watched it in 78'!
Ewoks are Pygmy Sasquatch.😂
Seems pointless for Adam to wear white gloves given how frequently he wipes his hand on his face…
Yea
they need to make some to sell some to work some just static display
His offical name is Nippet puppeteered by Mike Quinn.
Nice :)
So if you humidify the ewok will it regain its mobiity?
:O its so tiny!
This is cool, but i still hate the Ewoks, both in themselves, ruining ROTJ for me, and what they mean to the universe... Storm Trooper armour is literally pointless. Doesn't protect against blasters, doesn't protect against staffs (Rogue One), doesn't protect against Carebears and their sticks and stones.

Hey Adam big fan of the channel ,great work I am wondering when the next video where you answer peoples questions is going too be because iv got somethings that i want to know ... like I am looking for a life size 1/1 scale prop of the "when dinosaurs ruled the earth" banner from Jurassic park and am wondering where i can get this made or buy it if you know these things i would monumentally appreciate it if you talked about it in the next video where you answer peoples questions.

As for the banner, I see up to 30 feet by 3 feet available on Etsy... is that not big enough?
@@Thomas_Esson Thank you lots but from the reference photos i looked at in the movie the banner is about as long as the T - Rex wich averaged at around 40 feet which is huge!
@@ChaseHomeChromebooks Not sure I'd personally make the same estimation, but totally your call. In any case, message the 30-ft vendor and ask if they can do a 40. Or try JP Gear; they offer up to 20-ft, but specifically state "custom sizes available upon request."
If you like the Ewoks you pretty much like everything.
No baby Ework.
Yap yap.
We are the E E E E Ewoks....
Yup Nub
Has anyone told Adam why rubber gloves are worn? He spend the whole time touching his face and pinching his nostrils and putting his fingers behind his ears, then touching the puppet.
No doubt that Ewok would have a successful foot career on the internet.
Coatee-cha tu yub nub!
