Why does this train even bother going to Mangalore? There is a shorter, more picturesque route to Mangalore via Bangalore. Moreover, ‘super fast’ tag aside, this train will be dog slow going over such a circuitous route. They could end it in Kasargod. Would make more sense.
Nope. Via Bangalore is slower and longer. The train is at its fastest in its current route. It needs to go till Mangaluru for tappping its best operational and commercial potential.

Bangalore Mail takes 5:40 hrs, the fastest route to Mangalore from Bangalore for a train from Chennai will either need a reversal, or a slow 1 hr trip through SMVB to BAW. That's 5:30 + 1 + 9:30 = 16 hrs. 12685 takes 15 hours currently. Hope I've answered your question.
It is 12027 Chennai Bangalore shatabdi, not 12008 Mysore Chennai shatabdi, if i Look at your vide, the train whcih overtakes you can be Bangalore Shatabdi, it can't be Mysore Shatabdi, because that will be in reverse direction and it can't trash the train which you are traveling in, don't provide false information.
