It really doesn't get any more dramatic than this! But it's game on in the manufactures as currently the standings are TIED between Hyundai and Toyota 🇯🇵
Japan's mountains are so slick year around. Summer has rain. Spring and fall has wet moss since culverts always flow with cool stream water. On a bike, it's slippy, let alone high powered rally car.. which why JPN has hardest stages of rally.
I'm just glad the crews of both cars are okay. Those cam footages were brutal. I'm sure Tänak is bummed out, but at least he's okay. You live to drive another day.
Don't know if you have seen it, when Kovalainen is catapulted, Martin is searching for something in the car. It's a huge near-miss, which would have been surely fatal. Have never seen anything so scary as long as I watch motorsport (and that's more than 20 years)
Reminds me of last year. Just a full year ago in the same rally two drivers slid into a massive ditch right next to each other, and the same has happened again.
Dirtfish amazing detail of the drama unfolding👍 Down to the wire, indeed🇯🇵. Toyota vs Hyundai this Sunday! Got to visit those less populous rural Japan areas this summer. Beautiful country & people.
Slight difference between rally cultures, here in Finland there's a warning before the corner if the first crashed car can not be taken off the ditch. It can be one of the drivers who indicates to slow down or a safety triangle at visible place. I'm not sure was there any of these but likely not...
It's the modern safety cell that all Rally1 cars are built around. The rest crumples and breaks into many pieces to absorb as much energy of the impact as possible, but the safety/survival cell should always remain intact.
The way Ott and his co driver stared at the pace notes when they came to a stop suggests that something got missed. "Um, make a note: 'embankment, stay in"'.
I commented on this channel yesterday. The only thing Neville needs not crash b4 tanak. From Friday the pressure on both Hyundai drivers i knew only one car is surviving
@@timobolka1 Both. He’s obviously good enough a driver to make that turn again after learning. Japan is a relatively new set of stages. Teams are still learning about Monte Carlo, can’t imagine what it’s like feeling out Japan.
@@timobolka1I'm pretty sure Neuville and Tänak would've stood no chance this season if Rovanperä had done a full season. Neither of them is quite consistent enough to beat Kalle over a full season. But in Thierry's credit, he took the chance when there was one to be taken and won the championship. Next year it might be way more difficult for him again, so it's good he did it now
Man, that was a nasty pair of wrecks there! Glad to know both drivers and co-drivers are alright. Seeing that grate on that corner gives me heavy vibes of Sulman Park at Bathurst, where the grate on the outside of that turn has been known for causing problems and wrecks. Perhaps we may have found rally's equivalent?
Real Colin Mcrae vibes. I feel more for tanak on the manufacturer championship stand point. Definitely brings memories back for Melcolm Wilson i bet. Definitely loving the close battles tho
@ikellama for sure. He definitely gave it all he had. He was realistic that even finishing first was more for manufacturer then drivers championship. Sucks for that but glad they got there first drivers championship both the driver co driver and the team. Great job guys either way!!
so many inconsistent drivers. ott had it in the bag for the rally win and throws it. how many times have we seen thierry, elfyn throw wins away in recent times. even ogier is losing it.
@@kut52 I watched loeb's entire career and ogier's now. you cannot say every driver is always inconsistent. some just are a cut above. even kalle last few years was dominate until he had a couple offs this year due to rustyness.
If i had a nickel for every time 2 drivers crashed seperately in the same corner in Rally Japan i’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
Nasty accident, excelent coverage. I dare say, going on a limb here, that it was an accident a tarmac expert like Sébastien Loeb may have avoided, knowing the side of the road may have been muddy from the previous days rains. But I hope not to be hated by Estonians and Finns out there from this comment, for shit happens, especially when a driver is under pressure do decide a championship (I, personally, would have definitely crashed there ... : ⁰ )
All of the most detail explanations by Colin cannot account for the fact that both crews were driving to their improvised pace notes and not taking into account the changed raod conditions that existed at the time. The WRC has descended into a mickymounce series for 10 top tier competitors and it should totally reconfigured to allow more manufacturers to participate with cars that reflect the cars that are currently in production. Lots of drama...That is Japan ...
It feels like it's becoming a tradition of Rally Japan where 2 cars end up crashed in a stream in the same place.
What's crazier still is if we were running last year's version of this stage, this crash wouldn't have happened because it's past the old finish line.
🤯
The GOAT, THE GOAT Colin Clark 🐐 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Reminds me of last year. Just a full year ago in the same rally two drivers slid into a massive ditch right next to each other, and the same has happened again.
THANK YOU for covering this, and including the other car!
Dirtfish amazing detail of the drama unfolding👍

oh that ditch with that bank at the en doesn't take prisoner
The drift touge parts of Japan WRC, if you crash, your falling down a cliff into another town.
Thank God that there was enough time difference between these crashes. And it wasnt next or after that car... 🙏 Stay safe

It can be one of the drivers who indicates to slow down or a safety triangle at visible place. I'm not sure was there any of these but likely not...
You can see in the video there is a safety triangle when Kovalainen comes round, problem is Kovalainen had lost the car by the time he could see it.
@jpeltsi i think that is mandatory in every rally over the world, except maybe for muricains lol. Pretty much every where uses FiA classes and safety
thankfull both crews are ok.....as some one who works car wrecks that is one of the best break downs of a MVC ive heard in a long time
Man what an excellent video, so well explained it felt like I was there. Good knowledge, contagious energy 🏁🇿🇦
if you look at the Hyundai....the area around the driver and passenger...thet is not much damage....credit to the modern structures on the car...
It's the modern safety cell that all Rally1 cars are built around. The rest crumples and breaks into many pieces to absorb as much energy of the impact as possible, but the safety/survival cell should always remain intact.
There’s actually not that much structural damage to his car, the space frame usually makes it look worse
Glad both crews are ok👍
Scary stuff, I'm amazed even after this they will just keep rallying and for championship no doubt. Mental!
Nooooo...I wanted Tanak to win this...
Happy for Neuville he deserves that after all these years of career!
The way Ott and his co driver stared at the pace notes when they came to a stop suggests that something got missed. "Um, make a note: 'embankment, stay in"'.
Glad for the pilotes were ok :)
Nice explain.
What on this section happened to them?
I understood easily, thanks.
Detailed and explainable very good
Strange that two cars fell down the same spot last year. And the same thing happened this year. That's Rally for you.
Glad both driver teams are ok. I understand Tänäk's co-driver was very close when Kovalainen drove off.
The way this corner looks I'm surprised half the crews didn't end up in that ditch. So tiny margins.
Thought Neuville had all the bad luckbut Tanak just beat him to it🤣😂🤣😂
This rally Neuville finally had bad luck otherwise Tänak's bad luck can't be beat - remember hitting a deer in Poland e.g.?

Such is the sport of Rally. When you drive that fast in those conditions, consistency is near impossible to come by. Give it a try if you doubt it.
