  • Railroad/railway coupler. Eisenbahn kupplung.
This type of is called buffer and chain coupler.
This type of coupler is used in european railroads, with UIC standard.
The buffers are used as shock absorber, air hoses for air/brake supply and hook and loop coupling between rail cars/wagons.
Check out for a full sequence video: Railroad Coupler w/ coupling and uncoupling

That is some high tech Euro stuff there. I wish we had that in North America.

Actually it's limited in how much weight it can pull. Give me an AAR standard knuckle coupler over this any day.

I think that is better to have knuckle coupler which can couple automaticaly, knuckle couplers don't have buffers aside, in case of slack action during switching switchman just lift up a uncoupling rod and they uncouple.
In case of european style coupler it has buffers which are dangerous to work with, if somenthing happens a switchman can't move out, he is locked in a pin...so I think janney coupler is better.

      @@eddie.b.railroader,
Gear draft devices within the coupler pocket are the way to go.

And the fact that AAR knuckle couplers have eight times the rated strength (strongest in the world) of these buffer and chain things....

I like how you kick the air hose

This looks about 2% as strong as a Janney Coupler.

Oh my GAWD ! You mean they connect thousands of cars that way every day? Having to jump over those push pads? A man could get crushed between the push pads. How do they go around corners if there is a push pad on each side of the car?

Yes, that is a standard procedure in whole Europe, except eastern Europe, where they automatic couplers., every.switchman has to crawl down under the buffers, connect the air hose (air line), then put the chain on to a hook and tight it up...

@@eddie.b.railroader That sounds dangerous and hard on the back. All that bending, hundreds of times.

@@rael5469 also in asia and america auto coupling was realy common But back then in amercia there is a coupling called “link and pin” witch lock the coupling with link its a dangerous job and some people even had his hand crushed!

Very primitive and low bearing capacity of the system.

Not much coment re safety. FOR EXAMPLE AIR HOSE FIRST TO UNCOUPLE LAST TO CONECT. And come to a clear understanding with the driver that they wont move whilst uncoupling/coupling . Before spliting hoses close the cockc, part the pipes then securely hold the air pipe to destroy the air and apply the brakes. leave the cocks open so a loco cant creeo up and create a brake. Then you remove the shakle and close the cock on the wagon to be shunted awayc coupling is reverse in that you open the cock on the loco side, holding it firmlyThis helps your safety aplying the brakes whilst you are between the vehicles. Fit the shakle couple the pipes and close the cocks loco side last
