I was a Bakery Manager in a Ralph’s grocery store. I took a break and before I clocked back in, I went to use the bathroom. While walking out the bathroom I see two men chasing a man with guns out. I yell for everyone to get down, when I hear shots. These guys were actually shooting the grocery store. When I no longer hear the shots, I look up and the men running out. I get up and run to see if anyone was hurt. I make it to the bakery and a man is laying in the middle of the bakery bleeding out. I was doing CPR when the EMT’s showed up. But they pronounced him dead on the spot. That was my last day working there. I enrolled in the UCLA EMT course a month later. Unfortunately it wasn’t my first time seeing someone shot. I also saw someone getting hit by a car and I think that messed me up more then anything I’ve seen.

I’m a hospice nurse and the site of a dead body really can be life changing for some, and not a bother for others. I hope your brother sticks to nursing!

This was a very deep conversation. Very recently unfortunately this Guy that I’ve known since We we’re both four years old, his 15-year-old half brother and his 19yr old brother were Killed by their mothers boyfriend in their sleep. I am extremely heartbroken for them . He wants me to attend the viewing but I just can’t handle funerals I don’t like them because I get uneasy being around a body. I’ve always been this way. I know a lot of people who are not bothered by it but the thought of that scares me to my core so I can completely understand how that one ladys sister would be mentally screwed up after that incident to have to witness something like that. I wish It didn’t effect me but it does

And that’s totally valid Angie! I’m so sorry to hear about your friends situation, that’s truly devastating. But how people feel with death and funerals varies so wildly, you do whatever you are comfortable with ❤️

I remember that story! My mom told me about it after she heard it while she worked at the other Rancho store. So sad!

Interesting stories. Death affects us all differently. I was there with my dad and that was planned, but it’s a different thing when it’s sudden and unexpected. Cool how that made your brother decide to pursue nursing to be there and able to give care to people. His story would be cool if he is okay with it being shared.

Yes I remember so I was getting an item for customer and I saw the blood on the aisle and I told the guy sweeping to check the floors because it doesn’t look like meat blood it’s looks like someone’s bleeding but be careful and see if he can track the person and that’s when ur mom and the box boy found him there that was the most sad thing ever, I couldn’t see I didn’t wanna see i would of been traumatized I just opened at one of the registers thank goodness for ur mom, I love her.

Different sort of story, but I went to several family funerals before going to any family weddings. We lost my Uncle Howard, my Mom’s brother, when I was in 2nd grade. My Dad’s maternal grandmother died when I was six, but my Dad attended the funeral without the rest of us. My paternal grandmother died when I was in high school, while my paternal grandfather died when I was graduating college. My Dad was ill my whole life from the stomach muscle cancer he contracted from his WWII Army CWS duty on New Guinea, field testing defoliants. The Defense Department refused to properly diagnose him - when he went to Mount Sinai for a second opinion it was already too late for an emergency trial of Interferon - so the military murdered my Dad, hence my staunch opposition to the Defense (War) Department. My Dad managed, in remission, to attend my Carnegie Hall, New York premier performance of Penderecki’s Te Deum with the Oratorio Society of Washington, but a few months later he relapsed and I said my farewells to him. Then there were weddings and my Mom got to see all of her grandchildren grow up. As a choir member, i sang for elderly parishioners in hospice. I also serenaded my Mom, as she passed, with “All Through the Night”, a song her brother taught her and which she taught me when I was young.

Really sad about both stories.... Can have a terrible long term effect on people 💜think the trauma can deffo cause long term effects... My dad unexpectedly died of a sudden heart attack at home... In front of his partner. She couldn't save him... Dnt think she will ever get over that xxx

I think this story of your mom finding that gentleman in the bathroom with be one I repeat to people who smoke. Cuz smokers like to say it doesn't matter if they smoke cuz we're all gonna die but I try to argue that smoking has an effect on your quality of life and how you die. This is an excellent example.
I don't have a story of finding a person dying but I did have a situation where I went through the same thing as one of my colleagues and we both reacted very differently. Years ago I worked at a Blockbuster Video in LA and on two different occasions we were robbed at gunpoint. My colleague was held up the first time by one person I was held up by three guys the second time. He was very shaken and traumatized by it but I was angry. Just really pissed off. Like I wanted to beat the crap out of them but of course I didn't. I just thought it was strange how the normal reaction is to be afraid and i was just so mad beyond words mad. I don't even know if the police ever caught any of them. I'm still mad about it.

This is so true, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he was a smoker 😓 but that is such a great example of how similar experiences can affect people so differently! I’m sorry you had to go through that, but it is fascinating how you channeled it differently. Thanks for sharing Sophie!!
