+Anton St I'm sure someone has already thought of this but if you tune your g string to g# this becomes much much easier to play. Works perfectly. The f# position is the only tough one but its not that bad. trying to play this like this ( the way Andy Summers does it) I find to be way too hard for my fingers. I can do it but its just so much easier to play by tuning up to g#
+Duane Wilson ive always played it to warm up at gigs so ive gotten good at it so it doesn't bother much now. andy is a beast to have come up with such a great riff
Been playing guitar almost 50 years. I've not attempted this tune until recently. For me the movement of my first finger to the 3rd of that A2 chord is WAY harder than just holding the bar!
@@rudeboyfood1755Holmes Thank you for this suggestion. I found the chords by ear with the capo on the 2nd fret and it sounds so good this way, plus it's so much easier to chord when you have short fingers like myself.
I remember my beginner guitar teacher in highschool 'taught' his class how to play Every Breath You Take. More like, "Here's a few beginners chords I put together." He told us it's just G, Em, C, D, and G repeated throughout the song with a down, down, down down down down strumming pattern. I always wonderes, what version did he hear?
I always remembered Andy Summers as a ES-335 player. There's a nice short video on TH-cam (Andy Summers - Police guitar riffs) with him showing how he came into playing his style in "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take" in their basic forms. It was really helpful for me in learning this song. Especially the "Message in a Bottle" part. Great stretching exercise if nothing else. Thanks Justin.
This is the third time that i look at this tutorial and I thank you that you thoroughly explained all chords and the picking sequence for the different strings to make it close to the original. Great job.Thank God for you.
When ever I'm searching for how to play a particular song and I see Justin made a video on it, I immediately go to his video to learn. Such a great teacher!
Found a great guitar hack for this song, tune your D string a step up to an E. the song became WAY easier for me! I also love the channel, keep up the great content!
been playing guitar for like 20 years noe and tried this one and it worked great..for like 5 rounds...then my whole left hand and wrist starts aching...how much more to finish the entire song...lol (sadly, my fingers were like half an inch shorter..lol...) Great tutorial..the best I've seen so far :)
That's how he does it! Like you, I thought it was all out of the barre chord shape and gave up. This does make it much easier, but the F#7 is still tough for me. You play it perfectly.
Awesome lesson. Good classic tune! Thank you Justin! You're the one to teach me how to play guitar while I'm online. Please, let there be The Who - Behind Blue Eyes as the next lesson. Thank you! Wish you all the best!
Work the song out with a capo on the 2nd fret. You will be amazed at how easy it is to play. Only the A and the F#m parts will be played differently. The rest of the song will be played the original way...except the F bar chord will change to an F chord on the 8th fret. Hope that helps you.
There's a much easier way to play this. It's a little harder to explain, but so much easier on the fingers - you'll never have to do a stretch bigger than 3 frets and don't need a capo. Essentially, all you need to do is move the notes played with the pinkie finger to a higher string. So... *For the first chord*: middle finger, 5th fret, E string. Little finger, 7th fret, A string. Index finger, 4th fret, G string. Last note is ring finger, 6th fret, G string. *For the second chord*: middle finger, 2nd fret, E string. Little finger, 4th fret, A string. Index finger, 1st fret, G string. Last note is middle finger (or index finger), 2nd fret, G string. *For the third chord*: Google image search a chord diagram for the Dsus2 shape at the fifth fret. Hold down that shape, then play the _strings_ in this order - A, D, B, D, G, D, A, D. *For the fourth chord*: Exactly the same shape as the third chord, but at the seventh fret.
Nice......The only thing that I do differently is use my ring finger on the 6th fret G string during the first part while on the A chord. The move is a little easier for me than using my middle finger. I like playing it this way better because it is easier to let some of the notes ring out. Thanks for the tips.
Immediately I subscribed and put a thumbs up as professional guitarist bassist and drummer and keyboards and vocalist seven nights a week 30 years..... I can honestly say I love this 😂😍Oh and by the way I was playing this song on guitar and singing it 6 nights a week in a band called, "The Brothers Who," at the " Yucca Tap Room "in Tempe Arizona when it first came out ..
great lesson Dustin. For the very same reason (long, painful stretch of fingers) i had given up to learn that song a few years ago BUT with your lesson all changed for good ! Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I got it! But in fact, the stretching of the fingers are a way more harder if you play it in the original tune. It's not A but G# 😊 And went streight down to the F.
Thanks Justin for the middle finger secret. I literally hurt a ligament in my wrist playing this song 5 nights a week in clubs in the 80's. I found a little cheating trick by putting a capo on the 2nd fret. That makes it so much easier for players who just can't execute the stretches (especially on the F#m). Your method makes it possible for me to play it without pain. Are there any shortcuts to Message In The Bottle?
Beautiful piece of music you got ta admire the composer how did he come up with this . Well done Jason for emulating it ,it's out of my league yet only been messing for a year ..
Hey just wanted to say Great job on the song! I completely see what you were talking about. Yes it does send cramps through your hand! So while I was trying this out,, I thought of an easier way to simplify this. Tune the guitar to drop D ! Then your bass notes on the fifth and sixth string can be fretted with one finger, like a double stop. And then, to make it even easier than that, Instead of playing the notes on the B & G strings ( beat 3 in the first 4 measures) , play those notes on the D string ( 9th fret/B note,, then 7th fret /A note) I don't mean to take away from the authenticity of the song in anyway, but hey! God didn't make everybody's hand structure exactly like Andy Summers!
Justin - Great tips on playing it like Andy but even that way hurts my hand. It's so much easier to put a capo on the 2nd fret and basically play it in the "G" position.
I play it in drop D. So I just move the 6th string up 2 frets to match what you're playing in E standard and it's less of a stretch. Thanks for the tutorial. Great video
Just watched this video and noticed that you play with fingers 1,2 and 4 when I have to play with 1, 3 and 4 :) My fingers are not so long as your's so it would be a really stretch exercise if I had to play with 1 and 2 :)
Should be called Every Wrist You Break
lol
😂
Every stretch you make
Every ligament you break
I'm Batman stevie t
Owen Smith yeah
You have to be a Terminator to play this on acoustic.
its easy on acoustic just different tone
kills my hand lol, not used to stretching my fingers so far.
Git yourself an ovation.
Robyn Highart I'm playing on acoustic..its not easy but lucky I got long fingers lol
I learned it on acoustic haha
You should add a disclaimer that if someone break's his wrist - you're not responsible :D
+Anton St I'm sure someone has already thought of this but if you tune your g string to g# this becomes much much easier to play. Works perfectly. The f# position

+Duane Wilson ive always played it to warm up at gigs so ive gotten good at it so it doesn't bother much now. andy is a beast to have come up with such a great riff
Anton St I’m almost a complete beginner and this is pretty easy
Hahaha aaahaa.......!!!
I legit broke my wrist from playing this
Been playing guitar almost 50 years. I've not attempted this tune until recently. For me the movement of my first finger to the 3rd of that A2 chord is WAY harder than just holding the bar!
Yeah
I played this progression yesterday, my wrist is destroyed.
100% easier to hold the full chord.
Use a capo on second frett much easier for me, all in the same key
@@rudeboyfood1755Holmes Thank you for this suggestion. I found the chords by ear with the capo on the 2nd fret and it sounds so good this way, plus it's so much easier to chord when you have short fingers like myself.
Very similar stretches to the song Message in a Bottle. Deceivingly tough!! Andy Summers is underrated.
Andy summer never been underrated
Underrated is the most underrated word on TH-cam 🙄
Every stretch you take, every ligament you break...
Copycat
...for real ...
@Arnav Doom lol i was about to say that
steviet?
😂😂😂😂
police songs really go hard on the pinky especially message in a bottle
Weyoun VI well considering Andy Summers is a jazz guitarist yeah. Jazz guitarists are like that.
They love that 9th feel...
the best teacher of all times❤❤❤
As always, a terrific lesson. Few people explain the tones, the effects and riffs the way you do. Cheers!
Best guitar teacher on youtube.

Wow! what a tone. This sound's drivin me insane.
although the stretching is bloody difficult, it helps that its palm muted so you can get away without having a perfectly clean note
Now that I read this maybe that was their intention so that playing it live wasnt so difficult
Excellent lesson, Justin. Thanks for posting it and putting this classic in our reach! You're awesome!
You took a brilliant tune and turned it into butter so rookies like me can understand how to play it!!
Found a great guitar hack for this song, tune your D string a step up to an E. the song became WAY easier for me! I also love the channel, keep up the great content!
Great lesson! I've always loved this song (though none of my X's were ever worth stalking lol)
Phenomenal teacher.

Andy Summers is always a good palm workout.
Amen

Justic you are a legend guitar player. Cheers :)

Justin is the mountain of knowledge and skill
Yep
The best guitar teacher ever eeeever!
That's how he does it! Like you, I thought it was all out of the barre chord shape and gave up. This does make it much easier, but the F#7 is still tough for me. You play it perfectly.
I just saw the tab and tried to stretch my finger and gave up. But you sir, had helped me, thank you.
Thanks for the fingering "tips" ...literally. Very helpful, as usual Justin.
By now, you are the best teacher on the web. Even when you speak, I listen to you without skipping in the video. Thank you so much!
Ciao (from Italy)
The tip helped a lot to avoid the constant stretch!! Thanks as always :D!!
Happy to help! Cheers 😊

Andy Summers is a beast, and Justin you did a great job with this.
Justin. You're the man! Great riff this is.
This man understands my pain of trying to sustain that Dadd9 chord on Rocksmith
Awesome lesson. Good classic tune! Thank you Justin! You're the one to teach me how to play guitar while I'm online. Please, let there be The Who - Behind Blue Eyes as the next lesson. Thank you! Wish you all the best!
Think I've broke my wrist, need to find my electric before the acoustic kills me!

The best guitar tutor on you tube by far!
Thank you, I'll have to listen more often as it'll take me quite some time to pick up Every breath you take, your explanation is good
Fantastic! I was just thinking about this song today and talked with my friend about it and I felt like learning it.
Thanks for the clear and detailed advice & explanations of subtle techniques.
Thank you for your excellent video regarding every breath you take . I struggled with that one but thanks to you I'm sorted
What a relief , I’ve been attempting this over a g add 9 . Virtually impossible . I was thinking andys not a large chap how can he play this .
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I got it! But in fact, the stretching of the fingers are a way more harder if you play it in the original tune. It's not A but G# 😊 And went streight down to the F.
I love you Sir !

STANDARD TUNING JUSTIN ? GREAT JOB BY THE WAY !
Justin, maddest dog out.
Fantastic Lesson thank you so much!
King of pain. !! You’ll always be king of pain...
I didnt stretch my finger but used my first 3 finger. I'm new to playing and I dont know if that ok but it worked, and it was much easier to play.
An absolute killer for someone with small hands, like myself!
thank you so much man for teaching me
great lesson, well explained, many thanks☺
Awesome lesson!
brilliant mate, thanks.
Justin, what pickups, bridge, both, or neck pickup, for the correct sound? Ty!
You're the best!
I broke my little pinky and always have problems playing this. This makes it much easier, thx
Justin - Great tips on playing it like Andy but even that way hurts my hand. It's so much easier to put a capo on the 2nd fret and basically play it in the "G" position.
you should post a video
Much thanks for this great lesson!
Great demo
Thanks a lot!!
Good job. Thanks
The stretches are worth it
Great touturial👍
Best of the best I love this song
For blind Man is the best Präsentation of the Song Mary lieb things to you
Ow, I've just learnt this song by transcribing few months ago! :D But it was a nice surprise for me when I saw this video, good work!
It honestly sounds good with no palm muting ngl
I play it in drop D. So I just move the 6th string up 2 frets to match what you're playing in E standard and it's less of a stretch.
Thanks for the tutorial. Great video
Awesome sir❤❤❤
This is one of the first songs I'm learning on guitar, and you made it super easy to understand! Thanks so much! :D
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, you saved me the hell of hours... :-)
Just watched this video and noticed that you play with fingers 1,2 and 4 when I have to play with 1, 3 and 4 :) My fingers are not so long as your's so it would be a really stretch exercise if I had to play with 1 and 2 :)
