Best known for his classic Guns, Germs, and Steel, awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1998, Jared Diamond is a professor of geography at UCLA, but he draws on myriad fields, including anthropology, economics, ecology, and evolutionary biology to propose groundbreaking arguments about human civilization. His new book looks at trauma and considers the reasons why some nations recover and others collapse. Using six case studies--the Soviet invasion of Finland, Commodore Perry’s arrival in Japan, Pinochet’s Chile, Indonesia’s evolution from colonialism to independence, post-war Germany, and Australia-Diamond’s comparative study defines “crisis,” traces the process of self-appraisal and adaptation, identifies patterns, and looks at ways both nations and individuals can develop greater resilience.

Jared Diamond, a noted polymath, is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles. Among his many awards are the U.S. National Medal of Science, Japan's Cosmos Prize, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, and election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He is the author of the international best-selling books Guns, Germs, and Steel, Collapse, Why Is Sex Fun?, The World until Yesterday, and The Third Chimpanzee, and is the presenter of TV documentary series based on three of those books.

Israel DID occupy a large part of Lebanon for a couple of decades. Lebanon DOES not lob over rockets on Israel. Get the facts straight Professor.
I appreciate Jared Diamond's work and intend to read this book. But I am going to refute the idea that voting matters at all. If the candidates were chosen democratically then it would matter. But the candidates are now chosen by money and insiders often against the expressed sentiment of the people of the parties. Thus it's meaningless to vote in my opinion. The time we should have influence is in the nomination process. So I don't consider it a democracy unless people themselves directly chose candidates. Neither major party uses a democratic system to choose the nominee.
He doesn't look 81 at all...

Make reading criticism of Jared Diamond an equal part of reading books by Jared Diamond.
Jared seemingly has all the cred, but really isn't saying anything and certainly didn't answer one question satisfactorily. It's all about this guy selling his books. "Chile followed Milton Friedman's free market ideals and they helped restore their economy?" What?! They brought the country to the Precipice . . . it stands as an exemplar of what NOT to do! Friedman was another con-artist!

What do you expect? He's a geography professor with no formal training in anything related to geography. The guy is a sham. Just another old white dude telling everyone what's wrong with brown people, but in much more socially acceptable language that the average racist.

I am very disappointed in the false equivalency; we instituted a coup in Chile, the socialist president was removed by agents of the US. Also, the 'failure of compromise' is a craven failure of our politicians to oppose a long March to the right
55:00 The White Australia policy was never aimed at Australian Aboriginals, but at immigration from non-European nations (thankfully, no longer in operation). If I remember my high school history correctly, the policy was instituted after the Gold Rush, during which huge numbers immigrated from China (who remained and succeeded). I am not denying the unfair treatment of aboriginal peoples, but the mechanisms are different.
It's a useful comparison of Mexico's revolution but would cultural homogeny have some meaning in comparing it with the American Revolution?

Nature is in control now. If you are in a developed country, move to a protectionist strategy. Close your borders; build grain silos and fill them; support the military; you are going to need it. Concentrate on survival; your children are counting on you.
Turning up to vote should be a compulsory civic duty.
That condescending remark of the woman made asking if he is planning a cartoon for young people, to interest them in the subject matter being discussed, is the biggest reason the young do not want to be around older people.
She obviously has not met the young impressive people. She has to remember, we the older, are the generation that created the mess the young people will have to deal with in their future.
She didn't say young people though. In context, I think she was referring to Republicans.
They weren't talking about young people: they were talking about presidents who only look at cartoons, TV and graphs or those who get their science from pop culture icons.

I was really looking forward to hearing from Diamond on his latest book, having read all three of his previous books. Thinking he would connect the ecological crisis of our time to the crisis that is manifesting in our economic and political system. But this is seriously disappointing. He has totally thrown out what he his good at which is his ecology and decided to dabble in political science and failed miserably as it quite clearly hasn't occurred to him that an unwillingness to compromise is symptomatic of deeper issues. And the statement that the 'American military has never been involved in politics.'Tell that to JFK and Dwight Eisenhower that warned of the power of the military industrial complex.
The talk does not support the suggestion that the book would be worth buying.
This talk is disappointing for a number of reasons. Maybe an 81 year old is really just beyond it.
