Alexander Popov himself told in the 2011 interview that it was Alexei Medvedev who asked him to change the weightclass just right before Olimpic Games. Medvedev told that it might be some problems with doping. As it was found out later father of Kuznetsov was one of the Soviet national team coach, so maybe he could affect the decision about competitors in weightclass. That is the version of Alexander Popov.
С детства помню Сашу в одном дворе жили он там до сих пор живёт в хрущевке г Красноярск Всем двором болели когда в сеуле выступал кричали аж на улице слышно было Саня даваааай))) Хороший мужик спокойный и без понтов!
ultimately, the decision on how many athletes and in what weight class belonged not to the lifters but to alexey medvedev, head coach of the 1988 team ussr. popov was a world class athlete in the 100 kg class, he won the nationals in 1988 in the 100 kg class with 430 kg total. so, the question was why the coaches decided that he should compete as second Soviet athlete in the 110 kg class at the Olympics?
Does anyone know why Alexander Popov competed in the 110KG weightclass at the 1988 Olympics? It seems that most of 1988 he competed in the 100KG class.
liftupPreview Pavel Kuznetsov was the preferred russian weightlifter in the 100kg division. 30 years ago Russians had half a dozen weightlifters capable of clean jerk 240kgs in the 100kg category. Those times are long gone.
@@-waltt3467 popov actually held the record of 242.5kg set that year 1988, 240 was 1st done in 1983 by Pavel to equal total and win on bodyweight from Alexander . they never had 6 capable of 240kg jerk, maybe 6 totalling over 410kg with majority just..
