There's a big issue with this poll, first, how do you group together 40 hours with 60? That's a huge gap, it would make more sense to do 40-45 at most. And second, if someone works 8+ hours, they're probably working, unless this is shot on a Sunday, but it would probably be smarter to shoot 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon and 2 hours in the night to get all kinds of people instead of 6 hours straight

Exactly. Sometimes my relief wouldn't show up and I would do 16hour shifts. Only way not to epstein myself was to sleep in the bathroom. Smells like piss andshit. Slept so blissfully on my 30mins lunch break. Shattered my kneecap and went with to a clinic. My boss casually said don't be late to work. I literally had 3hours to return to work.
I wish you guys could’ve been a little more precise with the hours instead of doing large ranges. I think dividing it up to 30, 40, 50,60,70, 80+ would’ve been neat so I can get a better idea on the actual hours people worked. Also asking if they were considered part time or full time at their job would’ve been nice too.

I'm not German, however I heard this from this from a German in a video about American overwork and labour quality. In Germany, working more hours doesn't show dedication but inefficiency.
Im some cases, it's just about being there, not working. One looks like a team player. Also, Japan has a low work productivity, the lowest in the G7. About time they change that.
The sad part is that while the government (on paper) says overwork is bad, the factories (on paper) say they'll reduce overwork hours for their workers, some workers themselves fill their chests with pride when speaking about all the hundreds hours of overtime work they do.

Overtime does not mean the same as in the west, most don't get paid for overtime. Not doing overtime makes them look bad too, they don't want to be seen as "lazy" or "selfish" for leaving work before anyone else.

It used to be my dream to live and work in Japan until years ago i discovered they work so many more hours (and for free!). It is a huge gap of cultural and personal values between us, so i just wish one day be able to live there for a while but without depending on corporate positions to do so.

Back to your questions, usually in Japan it's not easy to avoid the peer pressure in work environment, if you refused to work more than what's scheduled you'll just be ghosted, uninvited to events, your colleagues will start treating you differently ,talking behind your back badly or even tell you to just quit if you can't handle the overtime as you'll be viewed weak and incompetent to benefit the company that you have to be grateful that they hired you at the first place ,but they'll never fire you, you'll be just pushed hard to quit,also, I'm so strict on not being close friends with colleagues, we're there to work not to know each others... Anyway,long story short, all those things happened to me before and led me to 2 years of depression, so my advice, don't work for the big traditional Japanese companies, they'll suck the life out of you. Ps** watch out for bullies and manipulators.
If employees die due to overwork it means they're working way more hours than they should. Working overtime with pay occasionally is common everywhere. It also depends on the work you do. A person can only do so much.
Honestly, like one of the ladies interviewed said, it varies by industry. Here in the US, in hi-tech 60 hours per week is pretty normal, especially now with WFH where work time and personal time bleed into each other. It's leading to burnout.

Actually, you're leaving out one key piece of data: what day of the week and what time of day you filmed this. The people working 60+ hours a week may not have time to walk around Harajuku.
I would recommend asking public school teachers about their working conditions/hours (maybe anonymously so that they don't receive backlash from their workplaces?), since I've known many teachers in Japan who work from 7:30 (or earlier) until 8~9pm at night, and also work on weekends too... They often have to take on club supervision on top of their own class prep, grading, and so on. For context, I worked in elementary and junior high schools for 2 years in Hokkaido.

Some of my Japanes friends said they usually work 11 hrs a day. That means Japanese ppl do overtime work almost every day. Moreover they sometimes work on Saturday. And they also said they go to office even if it's typhoon or heavy rainy day. I felt like Japanese are kinda social slave.
I am studying right now in Japan. Sorry for my English. My teachers really overwork. I remember my teacher will come to school at 7 am and after school, they need to supervise the basketball club for 3 hours (until 8 pm) and then do her desk job until 11pm and she works from Monday to Sunday (because clubs in Japan are every day.) I wanted to be a math teacher before but when I knew this I started to look for another dream right away
This does not surprise me, I work at warehouse where there sometimes isn't enough workers so the company will try to get the staff to work overtime rather then getting temp agencies so they can keep the cost low, with temp agencies the cost is 15% higher but on ot with them is like 25% to as the company have to spit the cost by a quarter with the temp agencies company cost. The regulars get paid the OT and the salary sometimes do not depending on what their roles are. If not boss then they get about half the amount they make after 40 hours, now same with with regular workers is 8 hours and then OT due to covid in Canada.
Please redo this with smaller increments. There's a huge difference between working 40 hrs per week and working 60 hours per week, but according to this experiment they're in the same category.

My work week is usually 50+ hrs per week. It's funny how Japan's government mandates a maximum of 40 hrs a week, yet a lot of people are more likely in the 40 - 80 hr bracket.
The fact that she used a range between 40 and 60 hours automatically made me think that the Japanese do like to work for a longer time because either she tried to lump workaholics and people with regular schedules to make her poll biased or she actually thinks there's no difference between working 40 and 60 hours per week. That can be a 4 hour difference per day or one day less to enjoy the weekend. That drastically changes your daily routine and the amount of spare time compared to a typical 9 to 5 job.
Thanks for your hard work. While this poll most likely missed quite a few people who were currently working/working overtime due to the time it was taken; it does give you a general idea of which industries tend to have people working longer hours, or even sporadic/flexible hours compared to those that are off at this time.
I used to live in Tokyo, and nobody works that much. Usually we sat around in the office and smoked a lot after 5PM waiting for the bucho to leave. Or, we went out and had drinks with clients. That was considered part of work. Fortunately, most Japanese now see that work isn't everything, and they are cutting back work hours and spending more time with family.

Agree with another comments. Please consider to do the poll again by changing the spread, like < 40, 40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 80+. Also, try to do the poll in late hour like 8-9pm or early hour like 7-8am. Sounds like crazy hours, but many ppl start & end their shift at those hour
That sounds about right. I use to work for a supplier company in the US for Honda. The hours were fine at 1st, but last here and the beginning of this year before I pointed out, you were looking at 60+ hours a week. Working 6/7 days a week. I think it's more of the Americans run it than it being a Japanese company though. However japanese car companies (especially as big as Honda) do work a lot since they sell highly. Sad for supplier companies though that don't get paid as well as if they were working for Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc.
I used to work like 60hours a week and even that is already physically and emotionally draining... I can't imagine working 80hours+ a week feels like...
I hope vacation days in Japan will also increase in the future. I think 10 is the minimum regulated by the law but that is way to low to stay healthy. Here in Germany, 30 days is quite common.
Not to mention 13mo salary. As a pro dancer, it is great to work here in Germany. Germans can be quite wasteful as well, mainly due to the socialist system but work/life balance is much more important.
I was an engineer, well specifically a programmer. I can understand why someone who works in IT company or maybe as an engineer has more than 80 hours of work a week. Even when you are on weekend, your upper or boss can interrupt your vacation or holiday to fix bug or if something funny happened haha. it was mentally draining, the works hour rate isn't comparable with the wage that i received monthly, at least in my country.

My personal experience I know no one who works only 8 hours in Japan with a full time employment but I know that there are of course people who do. But, aside from personal experience, statistics and records show you all you need to know about that. As for the brainwashing, it was meant as the fact that people in Japan do not think of their overwork hours of normal work hours, so they usually say that they work 8 hours and only if asked further about overtime they will add that number. That is the kind of mindset that has been implemented to be normal when it isn’t. You work as much as you work. Doesn’t matter if it’s dedicated as normal time or overtime. Hell, most companies even write in their online 募集 pages 8 hours + 2 hours overtime for example, which is ridiculous. You might as well say 6 hours plus 4 hours overtime. The result is the same: 10 hours and you’ll most likely work more than that. That’s what I was referring to when I said brainwashing.

I work in Japanese organization being an indian. I have overworked though. Worked about 15 hours. But the best part is that they are better than American and other region clients. They don't scold like that. They expect respect. They are perfectionists. But easier to handle than other clients. They do have humanity. Though they might look a bit robotic from outside they respect other people a lot. They always talk positive. I thought my client would leave me for a previous project where our team did a blunder. They did scold us but for their next project, they only chose us which is something we never expected. If it would have been some other region's client, then they would have closed ties with us.
It is because they dont like to gamble. They tried and tested you guys and they dont want to bother forming a customer-client relationship with another vendor.

You should've done this in the actual business district like Shinbashi or somewhere that has more typical salarymen rather than a fashion district like Harajuku where people you'd find the most are still in school or younger who tend to work less. I think the outcome would've been much different.
Here in the USA TV shows that Shark Tank states that people who implement their ideas and want to be successful must work 12, 14, 16+ hours a day, 7 days a week to succeed. As business owner of a successful company, Shark Tank is correct. Work hard, long hours gets ahead!
I'm not Japanese but I'm working in Japan atm. I work about 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 days per week. To be honest, I worked in places where it was much worse. Now, there's a law that requires the employer to pay overtime if you work over 40 hours a week, so financially talking it's good. And hopefully overtime hours goes down.

Back to your questions, usually in Japan it's not easy to avoid the peer pressure in work environment, if you refused to work more than what's scheduled you'll just be ghosted, uninvited to events, your colleagues will start treating you differently ,talking behind your back badly or even tell you to just quit if you can't handle the overtime as you'll be viewed weak and incompetent to benefit the company that you have to be grateful that they hired you at the first place ,but they'll never fire you, you'll be just pushed hard to quit,also, I'm so strict on not being close friends with colleagues, we're there to work not to know each others...
Anyway,long story short, all those things happened to me before and led me to 2 years of depression, so my advice, don't work for the big traditional Japanese companies, they'll suck the life out of you.

If employees die due to overwork it means they're working way more hours than they should. Working overtime with pay occasionally is common everywhere. It also depends on the work you do. A person can only do so much.
Honestly, like one of the ladies interviewed said, it varies by industry. Here in the US, in hi-tech 60 hours per week is pretty normal, especially now with WFH where work time and personal time bleed into each other. It's leading to burnout.

Actually, you're leaving out one key piece of data: what day of the week and what time of day you filmed this. The people working 60+ hours a week may not have time to walk around Harajuku.

I would recommend asking public school teachers about their working conditions/hours (maybe anonymously so that they don't receive backlash from their workplaces?), since I've known many teachers in Japan who work from 7:30 (or earlier) until 8~9pm at night, and also work on weekends too... They often have to take on club supervision on top of their own class prep, grading, and so on.
For context, I worked in elementary and junior high schools for 2 years in Hokkaido.
The working environment in Japan in the video is from 30 years ago.
That's a fixed idea. Japanese people now work fewer hours than Americans.

Some of my Japanes friends said they usually work 11 hrs a day. That means Japanese ppl do overtime work almost every day.
Moreover they sometimes work on Saturday.
And they also said they go to office even if it's typhoon or heavy rainy day.
I felt like Japanese are kinda social slave.
Depends on what field but yes, 10hours/day is an average plus Saturday until 5pm, making it 6 days/week

I am studying right now in Japan. Sorry for my English. My teachers really overwork. I remember my teacher will come to school at 7 am and after school, they need to supervise the basketball club for 3 hours (until 8 pm) and then do her desk job until 11pm and she works from Monday to Sunday (because clubs in Japan are every day.) I wanted to be a math teacher before but when I knew this I started to look for another dream right away
If japan doesnt have this work culture. It would be top 1 on every category in the world.

This does not surprise me, I work at warehouse where there sometimes isn't enough workers so the company will try to get the staff to work overtime rather then getting temp agencies so they can keep the cost low, with temp agencies the cost is 15% higher but on ot with them is like 25% to as the company have to spit the cost by a quarter with the temp agencies company cost. The regulars get paid the OT and the salary sometimes do not depending on what their roles are. If not boss then they get about half the amount they make after 40 hours, now same with with regular workers is 8 hours and then OT due to covid in Canada.
Please redo this with smaller increments. There's a huge difference between working 40 hrs per week and working 60 hours per week, but according to this experiment they're in the same category.
I wish you had: 1. Broken down the hours more precisely. 2. Asked if the people who worked overtime were paid for their overtime (and if so, regular pay or 1 1/2 times, or 2X) 3. My work week is usually 50+ hrs per week. It's funny how Japan's government mandates a maximum of 40 hrs a week, yet a lot of people are more likely in the 40 - 80 hr bracket.
The fact that she used a range between 40 and 60 hours automatically made me think that the Japanese do like to work for a longer time because either she tried to lump workaholics and people with regular schedules to make her poll biased or she actually thinks there's no difference between working 40 and 60 hours per week. That can be a 4 hour difference per day or one day less to enjoy the weekend. That drastically changes your daily routine and the amount of spare time compared to a typical 9 to 5 job.
Thanks for your hard work. While this poll most likely missed quite a few people who were currently working/working overtime due to the time it was taken; it does give you a general idea of which industries tend to have people working longer hours, or even sporadic/flexible hours compared to those that are off at this time.
I used to live in Tokyo, and nobody works that much. Usually we sat around in the office and smoked a lot after 5PM waiting for the bucho to leave. Or, we went out and had drinks with clients. That was considered part of work. Fortunately, most Japanese now see that work isn't everything, and they are cutting back work hours and spending more time with family.

Agree with another comments. Please consider to do the poll again by changing the spread, like < 40, 40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 80+. Also, try to do the poll in late hour like 8-9pm or early hour like 7-8am. Sounds like crazy hours, but many ppl start & end their shift at those hour

That sounds about right. I use to work for a supplier company in the US for Honda. The hours were fine at 1st, but last here and the beginning of this year before I pointed out, you were looking at 60+ hours a week. Working 6/7 days a week. I think it's more of the Americans run it than it being a Japanese company though. However japanese car companies (especially as big as Honda) do work a lot since they sell highly. Sad for supplier companies though that don't get paid as well as if they were working for Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc.
I used to work like 60hours a week and even that is already physically and emotionally draining... I can't imagine working 80hours+ a week feels like...

I hope vacation days in Japan will also increase in the future. I think 10 is the minimum regulated by the law but that is way to low to stay healthy. Here in Germany, 30 days is quite common.
Not to mention 13mo salary. As a pro dancer, it is great to work here in Germany. Germans can be quite wasteful as well, mainly due to the socialist system but work/life balance is much more important.

I was an engineer, well specifically a programmer. I can understand why someone who works in IT company or maybe as an engineer has more than 80 hours of work a week. Even when you are on weekend, your upper or boss can interrupt your vacation or holiday to fix bug or if something funny happened haha. it was mentally draining, the works hour rate isn't comparable with the wage that i received monthly, at least in my country.

If you work an 8 hour day, it’s no surprise that your colleagues do to.
My personal experience I know no one who works only 8 hours in Japan with a full time employment but I know that there are of course people who do.
But, aside from personal experience, statistics and records show you all you need to know about that.
As for the brainwashing, it was meant as the fact that people in Japan do not think of their overwork hours of normal work hours, so they usually say that they work 8 hours and only if asked further about overtime they will add that number.
That is the kind of mindset that has been implemented to be normal when it isn’t.
You work as much as you work. Doesn’t matter if it’s dedicated as normal time or overtime.
Hell, most companies even write in their online 募集 pages 8 hours + 2 hours overtime for example, which is ridiculous.
You might as well say 6 hours plus 4 hours overtime. The result is the same: 10 hours and you’ll most likely work more than that.

I work in Japanese organization being an indian. I have overworked though. Worked about 15 hours. But the best part is that they are better than American and other region clients. They don't scold like that. They expect respect. They are perfectionists. But easier to handle than other clients. They do have humanity. Though they might look a bit robotic from outside they respect other people a lot. They always talk positive. I thought my client would leave me for a previous project where our team did a blunder. They did scold us but for their next project, they only chose us which is something we never expected. If it would have been some other region's client, then they would have closed ties with us.
It is because they dont like to gamble. They tried and tested you guys and they dont want to bother forming a customer-client relationship with another vendor.
I'm from the Philippines but my father works at a Japanese-owned company. He works for 6-7 days a week, 12 hours everyday.

A good work/life balance is very important to a happy life.
You should've done this in the actual business district like Shinbashi or somewhere that has more typical salarymen rather than a fashion district like Harajuku where people you'd find the most are still in school or younger who tend to work less. I think the outcome would've been much different.

That's true on your own business but when you work for someone else (especially on a salary) it's a completely different story.

I'm not Japanese but I'm working in Japan atm. I work about 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 days per week.
To be honest, I worked in places where it was much worse. Now, there's a law that requires the employer to pay overtime if you work over 40 hours a week, so financially talking it's good. And hopefully overtime hours goes down.
The ones working 80+ hours don't have free time to chill in these streets 😂
